Tesla said it will use the money to expand its stores, service centers, Supercharger network, as well as the Tesla Energy business. It will also use some to develop and produce the Model 3 and work on the Gigafactory.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk intends to purchase $20 million worth of stock, which comes to around 84,000 shares. Tesla shares rose three percent to $245.40 in morning trading and Tesla said it expects to sell the new shares at the price they closed at on Wednesday: $238.17. The stock took a bit of a dive recently following Tesla's second-quarter earnings call last week. Some analysts have downgraded the stock.
Tesla says it needs the cash to accelerate the growth of its business. Tesla's third vehicle, the Model X SUV, goes on sale in a few weeks. The company is also working on a lower-cost electric car for late 2017 and is building the $5-billion Gigafactory for batteries in Nevada.

Elon Musk, Tesla's CEO, intends to purchase $20 million of common stock in this offering at the public offering price.
