It's easy for enthusiasts and traditionalists to give BMW a hard time these days, what with its plans to add more front-wheel drive models and seeming move away from more emotionally connected cars. However, the push for perfection that underscored its old Ultimate Driving Machine motto is still in there, especially in its M models. In fact, the first M4 recently made it to US shores, and the company thought the only appropriate way to celebrate was to introduce its new coupe to some of its high-performance forefathers.

The M4's initiation into the M car brotherhood involved bringing together no fewer than 52 classic and newer models – including four racecars and many privately owned vehicles – to an empty parking lot and letting the coupe drift and slalom around them to say hello. According to BMW, there was a combined 11,566 horsepower on hand. It takes a pretty trusting owner to stand back and watch as a brand-new vehicle slides its tail out with the rear wheels smoking within feet of their pride and joy. The First-Ever BMW M4 Races Through One-of-a-Kind Course Constructed from Fan-Sourced Current and Classic BMW M Vehicles.

Woodcliff Lake, NJ – August 20, 2014... The first-ever BMW M4 was welcomed into the BMW M family by navigating through a thrilling, one-of-a kind course created entirely out of current and classic BMW M vehicles sourced from fans. BMW enthusiasts from all over the country volunteered their BMW M vehicles from every generation to be a part of this exclusive experience, including an ultra-rare BMW 1 Series M Coupe.

With 52 total cars, 4 race cars and 11,566 horsepower, precision drivers Matt Mullins, Chief Driving Instructor, BMW Performance Driving School and Chris Forsberg, Formula Drift Champion, put the BMW M4 through the specially-designed course that formed the shape of a BMW M Series logo - revealed at the end of the video.

The 2015 BMW M4 Coupe is powered by the same 3.0-liter inline-6 cylinder engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology as its M3 sibling. The BMW M4 Coupe features increased performance levels that distinguish it from previous generations of the M3 family, delivering 425 horsepower. The BMW M4 Coupe will start with an MSRP of $65,125.

      I'm not against the new F82 M4, I think it's a better successor to the E92 M3 than the F10 M5 is to the E60 M5, but watching this vid I couldn't help but just focus on how great the older models were. M cars are certainly faster/better performing than they've ever been before, but to me, after the early 2000's (pre Bangle era) they just lost that spark. 

      Nice vid though, glad they used gratuitous amounts of exhaust note rather than some obnoxious "action" music.

      Dare I say that M Division has lost its way.  The E92 M3 > M4.  And the E46 M3 is a future classic.  Not a good time to falter with Nissan and Chevy offering such compelling options in the GTR and C7 Vette, respectively.

      Let's hope the M2 brings back some of that good ol' fashioned M division deliciousness.

        BMW definitely is going downhill. It used to be a drivers' car where you can tweak and work on it. Now with all the plastic parts and electronics, you'll be lucky if it lasts more than 6 years. In the regular 3 series, they even took away the temperature/oil/voltage gauges. The last straw is that they even eliminated the motor oil dipstick and rely on electronics which has never been reliable. Yes, they still claim it as a driver's car.

      4 series just knocks 3 series so far out of the game in terms of beauty. 4 series seems like BMW took more time to refine the design than 3 series. 3 series looks like an afterthought of the 4 series. Two doors or not.

      What is this new generation of M fans and M cars all about?  This whole video is an M3 or M4 acting like a drifting muscle car.  I'm not sure if it's the younger generation and the new target audience that is doing this or is this BMW?  Why not save $50,000 and buy the new 420hp Mustang?

      What an eye-sore seeing high-performance cars being driven sideways. If drifting is all people are after, any econo cars are capable in the right hands. Besides, sports car comes in a package, not soley having the ability to go sideways. I've seen too many videos from car-manufacturers touting their car's ability to go sideways. It is an eye-sore and quite frankly sickening.

      Do these new M3's have real LSD's?  I am guessing the drift car here has an LSD. Let's hope it's not bundled into some expensive package.

      Excuse my ignorance, but can someone please explain to me what the M4 really is? Is it just as it sounds; a sports luxury coupe/sedan slotted between the M3 and M5? What's the point? Are there people who really can't decide between the M3 and M5 and needed a compromise or something? I'm a bit confused. it just seems odd to me unless there is some kind of direct competition from Mercedes or Audi I'm not aware of.

        Nope.  The M3 coupe has been discontinued.  M4 replaces it.  M3 sedan lives on as the M3, at least for now.

        It's an M3 with two doors. Just like the 4-Series to the 3-Series. Just like the A5/S5/RS5 to the A4/S4/RS4.

        Same wheelbase, nearly identical dimensions, same interior, same powertrain, same drivetrain, but different number of doors and reworked sheetmetal from the A-pillar backward.

        The 2015 M3 and M4 are the sedan and coupe versions, respectively, of the same car. They also have new 6 cyl. turbocharged engines, whereas the M5 still has the V8.

      Its so sad to see BMW has lost its ways.  SO had E92 M3, dumb woman totaled it with her Cayenne Turbo S, so now he has an RS5.  We test drove an M4, and there is without a doubt we bought the right car.  RIP M3 Coupe (the only proper M). Maybe BMW will fire all the dumb marketing majors and Business majors with which they infested the M division and go back to its roots. FJM, with you all the way man.
