What do you think of when you see the letters GTA? The Grand Theft Auto video game franchise? The GTA Spano supercar from Spain? Alfa Romeo enthusiasts remember it as the ultimate badge of performance from the Italian automaker, but while it's been over a decade since those letters appeared on a production Alfa, the latest rumors suggest they could be making a comeback in the form of a new Giulia GTA.

Those who've been following developments from Alfa Romeo will know that the company is planning a successor to the beautifully angular 159 with a new Giulia to slot in above the Giulietta five-door hatch, and according to Auto Express, a new GTA version is in the works. Tipped to be powered by an upgraded version of the 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 developed by Ferrari for the Maserati Ghibli, the Giulia GTA is rumored to pack around 500 horsepower (give or take 20 horses) underhood.

That would give it a solid output advantage over the 425-hp BMW M3 and 451-hp Mercedes C63 AMG and give Fiat Chrysler Automobiles a performance sedan to challenge the upcoming Cadillac ATS-V and slot in below the bonkers 707-hp Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat.

Expect other oily bits to include a dual-clutch transmission and limited slip differential, as well as upgraded brakes, rolling stock and aero components.

The last time we saw the GTA badge was on the MiTo GTA concept (pictured above) that appeared at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show. Alfa was said to be considering a 159 GTA, similarly powered by Ferrari, back in 2007, but the rumors didn't come to fruition. The last production model to wear those letters was the 156 GTA that preceded it, with a 3.2-liter V6 that produced 250 hp. The most famous example, however, was the Giulia Sprint GTA produced in the late 1960s... a legend that Alfa appears keen to revive with this new model.

Also, while they're at it,make AWD an option (with the manual trans) so it can take on the Audi S4. Not all of us live in sun-drenched climates. I need to tackle the snow here in Michigan.

I'm curious to know why you state that this car will trump the power of the C63 AMG with it's 451 hp?  First, that car is out of production.  Second, this potential Alfa is at least a year away from production.  And finally, the next gen C63 will be packing 500 hp as well.

Regardless, if the GTA is sold as a FWD based 3 door hatchback it won't compete with either the Mercedes or BMW.

I think you missed the news where Alfa said there are going RWD/AWD only

Save the manuals! A dual clutch may be faster, but it will never be as fun.

I think this is good new for both the upcoming Giulia and the Alfa brand. It should be on a RWD platform with ONLY V6 engine options. Hell, make a family of V6s and call then the Busso V6 family. The base engine could be made from their 1.4 turbo- a 2.1 turbo V6 with 260 hp. The next rung on the ladder could be made from their 1.7 turbo- a 2.6 turbo V6 with 320 hp. The engine tailor-made for the M3 competitor could be based off their 4.5 V8- a 3.4 V6 with 450 hp.

A 1.4T and a 1.7T and a 2.0 Multijet could be used in other markets. In the US, the 3.0 diesel could be used.

      They should also make a larger 169 on the Ghibli's platform. A 2.6 V6 turbo with 320 hp, a 4.7 V8 NA with 450 hp, and a 4.5 V8 NA (8500 redline) with 600 hp.

very nice - king of the hyper- hatches.  Going to need the AWD kit to harness all 500 snow or no snow.

maybe not for you, but for a good portion of the intended demographic (ie not internet car nerds dreaming of race track) it is a requirement

I wonder what the interior will look like. If its better than the 4c's interior, thats an embarrassment to Alfa Romeo. My only gripe about the 4c is the interior.
