"Will it play in Peoria?" asks the age-old question about how Broadway shows would be received in Middle America. Well, apparently Tesla Motors plays well in Beijing. It's part of Tesla chief Elon Musk's grand plan, of course.

The California-based maker of the battery-electric Model S has delivered about 1,000 of the vehicles in China since shipments started there in April, Bloomberg News says, citing Dougherty & Co. analyst Andrea James, Barclays Plc analyst Brian Johnson and Wedbush Securities analyst Craig Irwin. Tesla also started shipping its first right-had drive Model S sedans to the UK in June.

It is estimated that all those deliveries helped push Tesla's second-quarter global vehicle deliveries close to the 7,550 mark, which is more than the company forecast and would set a new quarterly record (Tesla's second-quarter results will be announced later today). It would also mark about a 45 percent jump from Tesla's 2Q sales a year ago.

The Model S is priced at about $120,000 US in China (the culprits include the top-of-the-line battery pack as standard equipment and steep taxes that the government charges on vehicle imports) but that hasn't swayed status-conscious buyers from footing the bill, apparently. Tesla declined to comment on the China sales estimate when contacted by AutoblogGreen but we may learn more later today.

MEH, something new to copy and steal outright. They will buy them for awhile....then sell exact copies from a building right next door for 1/2 price.

One reason they opened up their patents was to encourage the industry to shift. The other reason was that they knew it wasn't the just the tech that was working for them, but the ideals of company and the way in which it built the cars. That can't be copied.

They can make cheap copies for a cheaper price. They can't make exact copies for a cheaper price because they can't replicate the Panasonic battery at the price that Panasonic makes them. The copycats themselves say they can use BYD battery cells or other Chinese cell and sell them for 2/3 of the Tesla price. They can't replicate the quality of the aluminum construction of a Tesla. Industrial equipment to work with aluminum is much more expensive that steel. Etc etc etc. Tesla would be more than 2/3 better.

Also the Chinese software would suck. Battery management, user interface, network integration, supercharger access would all be horrible/unworkable. The only way that Tesla could be "ripped off" is if they take the body styling and dimensions and fabricate cheap vehicles that look similar and are powered by a cheap chinese engine. Then they would have a gas burner with ok mileage(because aerodynamics) but fall far short of Tesla performance.

They can replicate the body and just use another engine. Most of the copies don't have matching engines.

I'm still laughing at the idiot who passed up $300,000 for the Tesla name rights, but yet still lost the title in Chinese court.

FOX NEWS FLASH: "Tesla selling in China, American taxpayers paying for the luxury lifestyle of wealthy Chinese. Should Obama keep financing so-called green companies with your money? You decide!"

Honestly I've already had to respond to that very question: How much are US taxpayers subsidizing the Chinese for buying these cars? The person responded well to my explanation so he wasn't a wacko. The question was placed though.

Seems so silly, just tell them GM and Ford are mooching off the government via super cheap loans that won't be paid back for a decade or more and they sell plenty of cars in China and that Tesla has no outstanding loans to the US government.

This is great news. But really, most everyone could see this was bound to be the case. The car is too good to ignore and too high-end to not be chic and desirable. Plus the environmental benefits make ModelS owners minor heroes in super-polluted modern China. Tesla is one of the most favored and honored American companies in China. The relationship is only going to get closer and sometimes uncomfortably weirder (cough, politics, cough). :-) Tesla/Elon have been positively masterful in their dealings with China.

Awww, yeah. He's got the luxury brand status that he was shooting for. Nice. That should help carry Tesla as they work on the Model 3. The Model X will also get lots of luxury sales.
