When it comes to sweet-sounding V8s, there are few outfits around the globe that can match the work of Mercedes-Benz's AMG division. The in-house performance group has blessed us with such masterpieces of metal as the iconic 6.2-liter V8, code-named M156, the supercharged V8 from the McLaren SLR, code-named M155, and the 6.2-liter V8 found in the SLS AMG, code-named M159.

The next great sounding AMG engine is code-named M178, and it will sit under the long hood of the Mercedes-AMG GT. The 4.0-liter V8 will turn out 503 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque with the help of two turbochargers. Of course, you already know this. We detailed it all right here.

Today, though, we have more on the sound that will come from this GT's four, rectangular tailpipes, in the form of a short video. The new model will boast four different driving modes, each of which comes with its own unique acoustic signature. We like the idea of being able to choose things like suspension firmness, but when it comes to engine noise, we'll leave it on the loudest setting, thank you very much. As has been the case with most AMG-badged Mercedes products (regardless of the number of cylinders under hood), the GT should also pack a ear-pleasing bark on startup.

      First everyone gets all jazzed about sliding cars around corners (drifting), now one of the biggest complaints is about the sound, or lack of (F1, the synthetic BMW M5, etc). A good sounding car gives me chills, but the bottom line - the fastest car around the track wins.

      the topic goes "sound like an AMG should" then i watched the clip twice, the second time i maxed out my speakers and the bass, and i almost heard nothing of an engine. sounds very synthetic if you ask me, sure it is a neat mill, but certainly nowhere near the brutish beauty and aural-presence of the M156/159! the best non-American V8 IMHO. you can hear that the new mill was designed as a exhaust turbo engine, i mean, with 4 liters total displacement it is not a large motor by any means, considering that it's a V8, large V8 that started life an N/A units which the get forced induction/turbo'ed are different. however these engine (like the turbo V8s from VW/Audi and the ones sitting in the current model M5/6) have that air-fan/vent swoosh-like sound to them, they sound uncomfortable and distressed at the high rpm ranges, and barely noticeable as V8s at idle.

      So this car is supposed to compete with a Porsche 911. I really wish that they would have hit it square on. I like the new 4.0 TT V8, should be a great motor. This should be tuned a bit higher to 530-550hp and be called the GT-S or GT Turbo. Charge 150K. The base GT model should use a higher tuned, dry-sump 5.5 NA V8 (M152) from the SLK 55 AMG. That motor makes a sweet sounding 420hp+ and 400lb ft. This would take on the Carrera S perfectly because even though this car will weigh at least 1500kg the torque would make up nicely. Should start @ 100k. The 5.5 V8 also has cylinder deactivation. So it may give the Carrera 3.8 a run for fuel efficiency. I am very excited for this car. I think about it a lot. Can't wait for Benz to man up and take this to the podium in GTE at Le Mans. Thank you for letting me rant.
