The Nissan Cube's indefatigable weirdness was likely both its chief selling point and its Achilles Heel, but Autoblog sources say that after a six-year run in the US, the niche player has been scrubbed from the Japanese automaker's lineup.

The move is hardly unexpected – there was confirmation from Nissan Canada that it was pulling the plug on the asymmetric little front-driver in its market back in May, and sales have not exactly been sparkling here in the States, either. In June, Nissan shifted just 336 Cubes, down 23.8 percent year over year. So far this year, Nissan has sold 2,294 units, a sales pace off 30.9 percent versus 2013. At its peak in 2010, the Cube remained firmly a niche vehicle, selling 22,968 units.

Nissan North America's Dan Passe, senior manager of product communications, maintains that "We are continuing to sell the 2014 Cube and we haven't made an announcement about future model plans," but Autoblog sources indicate that an official announcement will be coming in the next couple of months, and the Cube has been conspicuously left off of an exhaustive 2015 lineup "Charting the Changes" announcement released on Tuesday.

For now, it's unclear whether the third-generation Cube will continue to be sold beyond North America, or whether a fourth-generation is in the cards, but we wouldn't bet on the Brave Little Toaster making a return appearance. Either way, Nissan has a pretty full small-car stable, what with its Versa Sedan, Versa Note, Sentra, Juke and Leaf EV – not to mention the Micra being available in the Great White North.

America's once-burgeoning 'box car' segment appears to have sputtered out, with the original practitioners of the movement being either long gone (Honda Element) or hanging on by their aging fingernails (Scion xB). Only the Kia Soul has managed to find long-term success.

Even with their utilitarian dimensions, it could be argued that every one of these box cars have been faddish by design, so it's fair to assume a shorter shelf life. As Stephanie Brinley, senior analyst for IHS Automotive reminded us, "Even Scion's xB was intended to be a one-generation vehicle," adding, "when you have something that unique and unusual... just continually refreshing it doesn't cut it."

      Too bad. This is bad news for any other car makers who are contemplating a boutique car. Americans are way too conformist to appreciate an avant garde design. No more designer cars for us please. Just send us the cookie cutter boring me-too designs and we will lap it up.

      Kinda sad to see the cube go. Yeah, it was goofy looking. Ugly even. But if you could get past the looks, the cube is actually the perfect compact hatchback for tall people. Insanely roomy for its size, and the rear hatch opens to the side, so you don't bang your head into it when loading/unloading.

      Honestly, I like this car until I see the asymmetry, that makes drives the Sheldon Cooper in my head completely nuts.

      This car is most maligned by people who don't own it. Or begin to understand it. THE EXTERIOR This always blows my mind. As a car owner what part of the car do you spend over %95 of time looking at? That's right: the interior. When you get inside a Cube and discover how comfortable and crazy roomy it is... for a compact car... you don't give a DAMN about the exterior. And frankly, the exterior is downright fun once you get used to that. Need more convincing? I think the Juke is way cooler looking in exterior design. When you get into it, you discover that if and your shotgun companion are larger than 'medium' sizes in department stores... you can't 'fit' inside the Juke without elbowing each other. And that the Juke trunk space rivals the Cube's glove compartment space. THAT MATTERS people. And you can fit three Juke backseats into one Cube backseat. One last point -- there are COUNTLESS cars on the road that are so bland you couldn't name the brand or model at gunpoint. The Honda Civic sedan? Bland and forgettable. As the great George Carlin once said, "Are you going to eat at Wendy's the rest of your life?!? LIVE A LITTLE. TAKE A CHANCE!" Amen. HANDLING The Cube handles fine in most urban/suburban situations. You hear people piss and moan about the handling because it is CVT and CVT... like the Cube... is DIFFERENT. Oooooo -- DIFFERENT IS SCARY. Grow up. Different can be better, different can be worse. In the case of CVT handling it's perfectly fine unless you live to break the legal speed limit on every corner and get your rocks off SHOOTING onto highways like a make pretend sportscar driver. Most small cars suck at acceleration and road noise and the Cube was was common within this segment. Where the Cube handling really BLOWS is driving it alone on a highway with crosswinds. As an owner I can tell you it's nearly criminal, and this -- and only this -- was what made this car almost impossible to recommend to others. ADVERTIZING Nissan didn't. For about a month they ran an ad where some lady displayed how much room was in the back of thing, and that was about it. Nissan thought it was cool 'not' to advertize it. When you got to the showroom the fools on the floor acted like it was an aborted fetus. You had to sell them why you wanted to buy it. I had never seen anything like it. Nissan didn't get behind the Cube in the slightest and it didn't sell. Imagine that?

      In February 2010 I bought 2 of them. Surprised the wife one Saturday morning when the dealer showed up at her door. She started out thinking it was a bit ugly. Today, they're the favorite cars of all time for both of us. Mine has over 165,500 TROUBLE FREE miles. The space, economy and pure fun to drive aspects of these wonderful little creations keep hitting our hearts years later. Wife helps elderly people, and they all ASK if they can take the Cube, as there's no climbing up or down to get in or out. I rent cars a few times a month traveling, have driven some cars I was extremely impressed with, yet  I ALWAYS come back being very happy I have the Cube. It's brilliantly designed for practicality. I rarely get through a week where someone says something about how "cute" they think the car is or how much they admire them on the road. Maybe it was after having skin cancer surgery where I ended up with a rather asymmetrical nose, getting an asymmetrical car seemed fitting, or a GREAT car salesman who showed me how much I was losing on keeping my high maintenance cars (his numbers proved to be DEAD ON as the years have passed), the space I've fully utilized with equipment I've needed to haul for work.... I truly love having the Cube's, they have indeed been the best cars we've EVER owned, and between the two of us, we've had over 40 over all these years. I appreciate Nissan's bold approach, so many cars are indistinguishable from each other. I thought I was crazy buying 2 at one time, but I spent less than I might have spent on just one car for me. Go Nissan, I appreciate you bringing this wonderful car to market. I tell my friends I found it just outside Disneyland wandering it's way out of Toon Town. It makes me feel young, enjoy driving and is very calming with the sound proofing, beautiful sound system, visibility from those HUGE wonderful windows.... We'll always remember our Cube's from Nissan.

      Glad that little fad is over and one less ugly Nissan to look at. Maybe Nissan designers will figure out aesthetically pleasing exteriors are not a bad thing. And no more expensive to build.

      Nissan should develop separate cars for Americans. Americans do NOT put up with the **** that foreigners do. The cars you fund here are built to a higher standard and better than the cars everywhere else.

      Worst rental car I've ever had. I have nothing against "unique styling". I love the Soul, Flex, and even the first-gen xB wasn't bad. The styling was not right on this one. And it had a horrible engine, miserable CVT, and felt tippy around corners. The Juke is still "different" but it looks cool and drives well.
