Smart has tried its darnedest to diversify. It introduced the Smart Roadster in 2003 and the Forfour in 2004. It even did the Crossblade speedster in 2002. But each of those has fallen by the wayside, leaving the Fortwo as its only product. But that's all about to change.

After a long string of concept cars, the Smart brand is slated to introduce its all-new range at the Paris Motor Show come October. There it is expected to reveal both two-door and four-door versions of its new city car, based on common architecture with the new rear-engined Renault Twingo and with a keen eye fixed on the new Toyota Aygo, Citroën C1 and Peugeot 108.

Whether Daimler succeeds at broadening the Smart brand's range this time around remains to be seen, but in the meantime it has released this teaser video demonstrating the evolution of the design, which we've included below for your urban-transport enjoyment.

      Unless it gets 60+ mpg it's useless.

        I agree. As someone who has owned 8 smarts in total (yep, I am a fan), the petrol power 451 was the biggest dissapoinment. I could get 60mpg out of it, but only if I hypermiled it over long distances, usually it was around 42. I currently have a Citroen C4, and I get 55mpg without trying. Granted it is diesel, but my diesel powered smart got on average 62mpg. Not much more in the scale of things, despite being slower, noisier, less comfortable etc.

      When these were first coming to the states I reserved 3 of them for myself and immediate family to use for running to the store or for driving into the city but after I had the opportunity to drive one I canceled the reservations. I hope the newer iteration adds the much needed quality that the current model lacks along with a new transmission.

      Extra small cars with rotten gas mileage. I'd rather have a Leaf or an i3 in a big city environment and deal with the range limitations. In the big city is where an EV really shines and if London and Norway is a preview it will become very cost effective as well.

        There is a niche market. The cars are cheap and really easy to park because you can often find spaces that others cannot use. But yeah, the MPG sucks because of terrible MPG. But that doesn't matter if you are just using it as a city car and thus don't hit high speeds where aerodynamics really matter.

        That's the part that I don't get. If it had good or even respectable fuel economy for a car with it's size and power (say 45-50 mpg), I could understand the fortwo. Or if it was blazing fast with it's fuel economy. But to be small, slow and get lackluster fuel economy just doesn't make sense to me. And while it's not expensive, it's not so cheap to make up for it's flaws.

        I used to own a Geo Metro. I bought it because of the gas mileage. It was a great car that got 45 MPG combined at 250K miles.

      Their first step at diversification should be to design and build a decent car. Other than if you absolutely need to be able to fit in the smallest possible parking space, I really don't get the point of the fortwo. It's ride is horrible (that's being nice), it's performance is just as bad, it's fuel economy is pretty bad for a car this small and slow, and its tiny (obviously).

        ... and we already know that the new one is a full redesign. New engines, new transmissions (one proper manual, one proper dual-clutch automatic - the old one's automated manual is OUT), new suspension. It's already known that the new one will have an even tighter turning circle. It's known that the new one is 100mm wider, which should help with both ride and stability. What isn't known is whether they'll get the calibration right, but with the amount they've been hyping this, one would hope that the underlying effort is there. The old (451) smart is vastly improved by better wheels and tires (the stock ContiProContacts are hockey pucks!) and a Bilstein suspension kit ... I know this because that's what mine has.

          If they get it right then that would be great (and a first for SMART). But as it stands now, the current fortwo is actually the second generation, so I'm not convinced that a new generation means they will actually get it right. I drove one 3 or 4 years ago and couldn't believe how bad it was compared to a modern car. I expect some compromises from the size, but the one I couldn't get past was the mileage.
