A woman who was run over by a Beach Patrol pickup in Daytona Beach Shores, Florida, while sunbathing in 2011 was awarded $2.6 million in damages on June 26. However, she may only be eligible for a small fraction of that money under the state's laws.

According to WFTV News in Orlando, Florida, Erin Joynt was visiting the beach with her family, and while she was sunbathing, the Beach Patrol truck ran her over. She sustained serious injuries in the accident, including paralysis to the left side of her face and hearing and vision loss. As restitution, the jury specifically awarded her $2 million of the settlement just for pain and suffering.

However, this is only the beginning if Joynt actually wants to collect that money. According to WFTV, Florida law prevents the state or its agencies from paying more than $200,000 per incident in legal cases. In this case, the county already paid her husband and children a $164,000 settlement. For her to get the damages awarded by the court, she now has to take the case up with the state legislature and get the amount approved by them. Scroll down for the video about the entire case.

What a crock of crap, she was awarded the amount by a jury in court and now the legislature can say no. Something is definitely wrong with this picture, just one more of a million reasons to stay out of that Republican cesspool.

Republican cesspool, Gracie? Really? Yes, something is wrong with this picture. It is you. Apparently, you have selective reading skills. That means that there are several states that have the same rules. Not all are "Republican" states. However, please, continue to drinking from the liber, tree hugger vat of kool aid. Oh, and lift the arm your watch is on. It is too late to save your shoes from all the crap you are spouting, but you might be able to save your watch.

Interesting that the settlement was made, since the law is in place. I have to wonder why.

Because.... sadly, there is often a BIG difference between what is LEGAL and what is Right.

Should be done on a case to case bases....the trucks don't belong on the beach if you can't see sunbathers....One has to think what was the person on patrol thinking? she should get the money...I can only imagine her injuries and the fact that she has paralysis to the left side of her face and hearing and vision loss isn't a flagrant lawsuits...she has every right to sue in this case.....This isn't the McDonald's lawsuite where fast good makes you fat....This is someone not paying attention to their jobs...it's not an accident...it would have been deemed an accident if she ran infront of the officers truck and he hit her while he was coming down the beach at the last min....but this was someone who was there before the truck and the officer wasn't paying attention...she deserves the money....

mack: The beach isn't a road. When I lived in CA, the few beaches that were patrolled the rangers tried to keep to the wet sand made by the tide. People walked in this sand, but I can't recall anybody laying down in it to catch their rays. This patroller, man or woman, blew it big time. If its a guy, maybe there was too many bikini babes for him to stay focused on his job. A woman? Maybe the blub gutted, spindly legged speedo wearers freaked her out.

Florida sucks! It has a bunch of ignorant political officials that don't know their azz from their elbow. She should get what she was awarded.
hey Mr. Wonderful, where are you from ? Have you ever looked into your state award laws ? IF it came from a state agency. yes they do have cut-off limits - so does every state (people would be suing the governments because they have the "most" $$$$; so there are limits. BUT, once she takes it to the state legislature and get the amount approved by them, she will get it all.

Florida has dumb laws because of the people Floridians put in! I am not originally from Florida, they vote based on who appeals to them best not based on party bases
