There's no shock in finding out that a new Bentley is going to be expensive; it kind of goes with the territory. However, company boss Wolfgang Dürheimer is indicating that its upcoming SUV could create a whole new rung of pricing for luxury utility vehicles.

While speaking with Autocar at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, Dürheimer let slip that the company's forthcoming SUV would have a price of 130,000 pounds or more ($220,000 at current US exchange rates). Thankfully, the Bentley boss further clarified the reason for such a high cost of entry. He said that the elite players in the field like the Porsche Cayenne or Land Rover Range Rover have prices that hit the European equivalent of about $220,000 for top-trim, fully-optioned models. "We aim to solve this problem," said Dürheimer to Autocar. While it's exceedingly rare for converted foreign MSRPs to equal the actual expense in the US, it looks to be at the very top end of the class.

That is a stratospheric figure, but the Bentley SUV already has some big rumors to live up to. The company is reportedly aiming for a 200-mile-per-hour top speed and may possibly offer a plug-in hybrid powertrain, as well. It's being pretty flagrant in evaluating the new vehicle too by plastering a promotional URL on its test mules (see above). They show the model with the brand's trademark circular headlights up front, and interior photos indicate a digital instrument panel. If Dürheimer is serious about that price, the company better pack the car with every bell and whistle it can find to justify it.

And the Mulsanne goes for how much? It's Bentley, something tells me the price will be justified*. *or, as justifiable as it could be

I'm sure it will look better without that camo, but based on what I can see past the camo, I'm not optimistic about the styling. That said, I'm not the target market.

If you think that the price of a Bentley is "justified" to Bentley customers based on the "bells and whistles," you don't understand the premium market very well. They are paying for a brand name in conjunction with substance not solely for substance.

I swear if this thing looks like a Bentley Continental wagon I am going to puke. Bentley or not, The Range Rover L is the one to beat. I cannot wait until that head to head happens. Bentley has been making stale redesigns lately. They are not selling that well to new consumers. Mulsanne will always be "The Bentley" in my book.

I totally agree. The Continental came out roughly 12 years ago, and hardly changed visually. The fact that they base this design on a 12 year old sedan is odd. The Mulsanne is the most modern looking product they have.

I've never particularly cared for the styling of the Continental and, as you note, they've basically left the styling as is.

These top of the line VW SUVs in Bentley drag will never have the cred of the Range Rovers, it's as simple as that. Except for fotball (soccer) players.

Why? You think Bentley does not have the cred? Really? And the know how of Audi, Bugatti, Lambo, WV, Porsche combined is not good to put together the best SUV ever? Or one of the best? I will disagree...

It's good thing, then. Because I think a 200K SUV will be marketed primarily to footballers, rappers, and other parvenus without the upbringing to choose the SUV driven by Her Majesty the Queen of England, but who have enough money not to care.

I doubt Lizzy does too much driving these days. BTW, she also has quite a few Rolls and Bentleys in her fleet. A Bentley is her state car. And if/when Bentley releases this SUV, I would guess she would get a version of this as well.

will the model X have off-road agility? Will it be able to hit near 200 mph? Doubt it. Tesla is not to be compared with other brands. Tesla is a breakout brand for sure. But, Tesla is not always the answer to questions that have not been asked.

Right, because so many of these Bently SUVs will be climbing the Rubicon Trail. The farthest they'll go off-road is when the duck-lipped Beverly Hills princess driving it accidentally runs over the begonia bed in her circular driveway.

Awesome! Move, so now ultra high net worth individuals can come to New York, launder their money through their LLC into some $90 million condo on Pine Street then fly back to their country and also get the new Bentley SUV delivered.
