Hold onto your butts. "600-plus horsepower" is what we were told to expect from the 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT with its 6.2-liter supercharged Hellcat V8 engine. But as we've just learned, those were incredibly conservative numbers. Dodge has officially announced that the range-topping Challenger will hit the asphalt with 707 – seven hundred and seven – horsepower, making it the "most powerful muscle car ever."

Of course, 707 hp is only part of the story, as the Hellcat has also been confirmed to produce 650 pound-feet of torque. All that power will run exclusively to the rear wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission that differs from other Challengers. The new gearbox, 8HP90 (rather than the 8HP70) is "upgraded to handle the extra power and torque," says Dan Reid, SRT's manager of product design and motorsports.

We certainly hope you're prepared to spend a ton of money replacing tires.

There's more news with this announcement, though. Like the Track Key that Ford offered on the Mustang Boss 302, the Challenger SRT Hellcat will also come with two key fobs – one red, one black. The former allows the driver to unleash the full 707 hp, while the black key limits its holder to just – just – 500 horsepower and an as-yet undisclosed amount of torque. When we half-jokingly asked Reid when we would see this engine in the Viper, Reid would only say "It would require a ton of engineering." Bummer. We've previously heard that the engine is too wide, so we wouldn't bet on such a model seeing the light of day, especially when it would probably embarrass the car's current ten-cylinder offering.

Pricing will be released "over the next month or so."

This thing looks to be an absolute monster, and we can't wait to hit the drag strip. Scroll down for the official press blast, as well as a short video.

Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Is The Most Powerful Muscle Car Ever -- 707 hp!

July 1, 2014 , Auburn Hills, Mich. - The all-new 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT, with its supercharged 6.2-liter HEMI Hellcat engine, produces an unprecedented 707 horsepower and 650 lb.-ft. of torque, making it the most powerful Challenger ever, Dodge's most powerful V-8 ever and the most powerful muscle car ever.

The Challenger's new 6.2-liter Supercharged Hellcat engine is also the first factory supercharged HEMI, as well as Dodge and SRT's first application of V-8 supercharger technology. For the first time in Chrysler Group history, the all-new 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT with a Hellcat engine comes standard with two key fobs -- red and black. The red key fob is the only key that can unlock the full 707 horsepower and torque potential of the Challenger SRT Hellcat engine; while the black key fob limits the driver to a reduced engine output of 500 horsepower.

In addition to the awe-inspiring 707 horsepower of the new Hellcat HEMI, the new 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat has been redesigned and totally re-engineered to be the most true-to-form muscle coupe on the market with performance-enhancing technologies inside and out, including the new TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic transmission and an all-new interior inspired by the classic 1971 Challenger.

The Dodge and SRT brands now offer the most complete lineup of muscle cars in the market, including the new 2015 Dodge Challenger SXT with its standard powerful and fuel-efficient Pentastar V-6 engine combined with the TorqueFlite eight-speed transmission that delivers 300 horsepower and an estimated 30 miles per gallon; the 2015 Dodge Challenger R/T with the high-torque 5.7-liter HEMI now paired with the TorqueFlite eight-speed or six-speed manual transmission; and the all-new 6.4-liter HEMI Challenger Scat Pack that delivers 485 horsepower and 475 lb.-ft. of torque with the TorqueFlite eight-speed or six-speed manual.

The 2015 Dodge Challenger and Challenger SRTs are built at the Brampton, Ontario, Assembly Plant and will start arriving in Dodge dealerships in the third quarter of 2014.

"we wouldn't bet on such a model seeing the light of day, especially when it would probably embarrass the car's current ten-cylinder offering." More to the point- it would allow the Viper to embarass its corporate stablemate the Ferraris.

Trust me, no Dodge or Chrysler will ever embarrass a Ferrari. Pure stupidity to even suggest it.

Guess you don't pay much attention to he 24 hr endurance races, international races or other various events where Chrysler vehicles have dominated. I've seen dodge embarrass high end European cars on the autobahn AND the Nurburgring. So stop talking out of your ass.

The Viper is still faster in every metric so I don't think there's anything to worry about.

Now Chevy is going to have to one up it with a new ZR-1 ( I Hope). Also still betting on the new Z06 will take it in a 0-60 run and 1/4 mile.

Z06 will be faster by probably every metric. However, this will be a more fun daily driver and you dont look like a tool in a boy racecar.

The 2015 Corvette ZO6 produces 650hp/650 torque & will CRUSH this thing!!! 0-60 in under 3 seconds. This thing can only go fast in a straight line, they don't handle worth a s**t! Not only will the ZO6 crush it in a straight line race, but it's not even worth comparing the handling or braking ability, because there is no contest. The new Corvette ZR1 is already in development & will be pushing 750-800HP & will be very close to the top speed of the Bugatti Veyron @ 254 MPH. 2016 Corvette ZR1 $130,000...Bugatti Veyron $1.6 million

The GT500 has a better power to wieght ratio by a solid margin. This thing is going to need gallons of VHT if it wants to run an 11.9 stock.

The 8HP90 needs to be put on the Viper options list. Downvote me all you want, an auto Viper would lead to a 50% increase in sales.

lol 2 men. Guys that claim to be "men" tend to be B!tches. Driving a stick does not make you a man. Following a code that men are suppose to have (Honor, Respect and Dignity). But....b!tches do not follow that code. I know some men that drive autos that will gore that crap out of out some ish talkers.

Im not downvoting that. I have been saying this for years. All of these "I want a stick" guys are not going to buy these cars. I know I can drive stick, but I do not want all my cars to be stick. Automatic is good for cruising and instant power. Now this thing has a 5 year 100k powertrain warranty like the whole lineup. Viper offers the samething. Now Dodge.....make a 700+ hp Viper. That V-10 is bleeding potential. Corvette offers it too. The only company that doesn't is Ford, BMW, MB, Acuras, RSX, Infiniti and Lexus. With that kind of coverage, you just cannot go wrong. Z06 650Hp or Challenger 707.
