Comparing Nürburgring Nordschleife lap times is a bit of a black art, especially when looking at times officially set by manufacturers matched against other sources. Driver skill and weather conditions play a huge roll in determining a quality time. Still, it appears BMW fans have reason to celebrate because the new M4 Coupe beat the previous-generation M3 by 13 seconds in a recent test by Germany's Sport Auto magazine.

Sport Auto conducts what it calls the Supertest, where it runs performance cars around the 'Ring and the short course at Hockenheim to create its own database of comparable times. The M4 with a dual-clutch transmission, ceramic brakes and Michelin Pilot Supersport tires managed a quality 7 minutes 52 second lap around the 12.8-mile course, compared to 8:05 from the last M3, according to BimmerPost. The new coupe also beat the magazine's posted times for the Audi RS5 Coupe, which did it in 7:59, and Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG with an 8:01, but couldn't quite match the 7:44 set by a 911 Carrera S. Still, BMW must be somewhat pleased with these results of its new 425-horsepower coupe because it posted the magazine's cover and an image of the time on its official M Facebook page.

While the M4 apparently stands up to contemporaries and predecessors, new generations of the AMG and RS models are reportedly on the horizon. In other words, more tests will come.

Sweet, you can run the ring in under 8 minutes to the tune of fake engine noise

I know my friend loved his E46. I couldn't believe he totaled it driving in light rain behind me in my old 2002 WRX! The good thing was, with the resale value, he got a great insurance claim (and wound up buying a Legacy GT). Hasn't totaled the Legacy GT yet. Should be much more solid in wet weather, though...

That's pretty impressive given the car's price.

"Driver skill and weather conditions play a huge ROLE in determining a quality time." AB, when are you going to get proofreaders, or better yet ensure that your writers have a decent grasp of the English language? I don't think that's an unreasonable expectation of people whom you're paying to write, after all.

I'm very curious to see how the C7, at a similar price, will compare. I know, 2-seater vs. 2+2. Now come the downvotes from the BMW fan-boys.

I've don't know if gm put the c7 through the ring but the new z06 with the z07 package will surely be there. With all the downforce on the new z, I'm betting for a fantastic time and guess It will break the 7:10 mark. With the z07 being 100k or less depending on other options, it's still a little more expensive then a fully loaded m4 (right?)

Still not quite as quick as the BMW M3 CSL at 7:50. It's actually a little disappointing to me considering the FWD cars that will be close to this time. The upcoming CTR will come close to matching if not beating this time.

Just wait for the M4 CSL. The regular E46 M3 ran a ring time of 8:22, and the CSL at 7:50. Think of what BMW could do with the M4 by turning it into a CSL. Maybe it could reach a time of 7:4x, or even 7:3x.

Considering the Carrera S cost about $150K that's pretty impressive.

Why bring this color back? It didn't work on the E46, (a color everybody runs from) M3.

I like it myself. A moot point though since I can't afford one.

Ring times aren't really comparable on different tires from different eras. Tire technology, particularly with RFT's, has advanced significantly in the six years since the E92 M3 was released.

The tires make a huge difference. The Michelin Pilot SS are some of the best street tires ever made.
