General Motors issued a recall for more than a half million Chevrolet Camaros on Friday morning because of an ignition-switch safety hazard that mirrors the one at the center of the company's current crisis.

The problem affects Camaro models from the 2010 to 2014 model years. Approximately 464,712 cars are impacted in the United States, and 511,528 overall in North America. GM will alter the Camaro key to a more standard design, and will notify car owners with a recall notice in the mail.

In an announcement, the company said the ignition switches on the Camaros are fundamentally different parts than the older ignition switches found on defective cars that are responsible for killing at least 13 people and causing 54 crashes.

But the consequence is roughly the same: like the faulty Chevy Cobalts and Saturn Ions involved in those earlier accidents, a driver's knee can inadvertently bump the key fob in the Camaros and cause the key to move out of the "run" position. This can lead to a reduction or loss of power.

GM said it knew of three Camaro crashes related to the problem, and those accidents resulted in four injuries. No further information on those crashes was immediately available Friday morning.

GM said the problem was discovered during internal testing that followed the recall of more than 2.5 million cars for faulty ignition switches earlier this year. That problem, along with the company's decade-long delay in recalling affected cars, has become the subject of Congressional hearings and multiple federal investigations.

It said the Camaro issue "may primarily affect drivers sitting close to the steering column."

GM announced three other recalls Friday morning.

They included recalls for 28,789 Saab 9-3 convertibles from the 2004 to 2011 model years that had a defective tensioning system cable in the driver's side seat-belt system; 21,567 Chevrolet Sonic subcompacts from the 2012 model year for a condition in which a transmission turbine shaft may fracture; and 14,765 Buick LaCrosse sedans from the 2014 model year, which had a wiring problem in the driver's door.

GM said it was unaware of any crashes or injuries related to these problems.

GM Proactively Announces Four New Recalls

DETROIT – General Motors will recall all current generation Chevrolet Camaros because a driver's knee can bump the key FOB and cause the key to inadvertently move out of the "run" position, with a corresponding reduction or loss of power.

The issue, which may primarily affect drivers sitting close to the steering column, was discovered by GM during internal testing following the ignition switch recall earlier this year.

"Discovering and acting on this issue quickly is an example of the new norm for product safety at GM," said Jeff Boyer, vice president of GM Global Safety.

The Camaro ignition system meets all GM engineering specifications and is unrelated to the ignition system used in Chevrolet Cobalts and other small cars included in the ignition switch recall.

GM is aware of three crashes that resulted in four minor injuries that it believes may be attributed to this condition.

The company will change the Camaro key to a standard design from one in which the key is concealed in the FOB and is opened by pushing a button. The change will make the ignition key and FOB independent of each other, so that inadvertent contact with the FOB won't move the key from the "run" position. There are 464,712 Camaros from the 2010-2014 model years in the U.S. included in the recall. Including Canada, Mexico and exports, the total recall population is 511,528.

Separately, GM also announced two safety recalls and one non-compliance recall involving a total of 65,121 cars in the U.S. all three of which were reported to the NHTSA on Wednesday, June 11, 2014. Including Canada, Mexico and exports, the total recall population is 69,839.

In all cases, customers will receive letters from GM letting them know when they can bring their vehicles into a dealership, where the recall repairs will be performed free of charge and courtesy transportation would be provided as needed.

The recalls:

28,789 Saab 9-3 convertibles from the 2004-2011 model years for an automatic tensioning system cable in the driver's side front seat belt retractor that could break. If the cable were to break, seat belt webbing spooled out by the driver would not retract. The convertibles and sedans were investigated at the same time, but the convertible parts were not identical to the sedan parts. GM has since learned of customer complaints to the NHTSA for the convertibles. Dealers will replace the driver's side retractor in the recalled vehicles. In addition, GM has issued a special coverage, so that if the same repair is required to the passenger side retractor it will be covered for the life of the vehicle. GM also extended the special coverage for passenger side belt retractors on the 2004 Saab 9-3 sedan from the original 10-year coverage to the life of the vehicle, like the convertibles. GM is unaware of any crashes, injuries or fatalities due to this condition.

21,567 Chevrolet Sonic 2012 model year compacts equipped with a six-speed automatic transmission and a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine for a condition in which the transmission turbine shaft may fracture as a result of a supplier quality issue. If this were to occur in first or second gear, the vehicle could not upshift into third through sixth gears. If the turbine shift fractured while in one of the higher gears, the vehicle would coast until it was moving slow enough to downshift into first or second gear. In both instances, a malfunction indicator lamp may illuminate. If driven in this condition for a long period of time, all forward gears may become inoperable. The engine would continue to run and all power accessories would function. Dealers will replace the transmission turbine shaft. GM is unaware of any crashes, injuries or fatalities related to this condition.

14,765 model year 2014 Buick LaCrosse sedans because a wiring splice in the driver's door may corrode and break. That may communicate incorrect information to circuits that control the door chime and allow passenger windows, rear windows and the sunroof to function when the vehicle is turned off and the driver is not in the vehicle. In addition, a chime will not sound when the driver's door is opened if the key is in the ignition.

Dealers will inspect the driver door window motor harness and, if necessary, replace an electrical splice. GM is unaware of any thefts, crashes, injuries or fatalities related to this condition.

      I am glad GM is owning up to this. It is an ethics issue. but I believe GM is only doing it to save their ass. For that, this company can NOT be trusted. It is a poor excuse for a tax payer bailout!

      I had a 2013 Camaro for a little over a year (bought it as a x-mass present for myself in 2012), and have had a 2014 Camaro for about 6 months now. Not once has my knee/leg ever gotten anywhere near hitting the key. And even then, in reading up on this recall, their not changing anything in the ignition itself. Their simply taking away the 'switchblade' style key/remote combination, and replacing it with a 'older-style' key (with nothing else built into it), and a 'separate' remote (for remote start/doors/truck/locks and such).

      If people are for some reason sitting so close to the peddles that their knees are up 'inside' the console and behind the wheel (in which case any crash is likely to kill them as they slam into the steel wheel or get their neck snapped by the air-bag as their sitting to close to"IT" as well as the wheel), their still going to hit a 'regular' key, (which is what their apparently replacing the keyfob with) with their knee's.

      If the ignition switch is 'that' loose, yet their simply replacing the keys rather than working on the ignition switch itself, this key-swap isnt going to do anything but aggravate people who now have to keep track of a separate key 'and' remote.

        Are some pictures i nabbed with my cell-phone not 5 mins ago. Showing my own 'personal' leg/knee/thigh/foot positions when doing various things ('driving', 'cruising', 'relaxed', 'breaking').

        In only 1 of them is my knee 'anywhere' near the keyfob, and even then, my thigh is pressed up 'under' the wheel (the wheel itself is keeping the leg/knee from going any higher). Its not a position I 'normally' use, but i do know i do it once and a while. Most of the time the other 'normal relaxed' picture is how my legs/knees sit when im not holding down the gas/break/clutch.

        Unless i, for some odd reason, started driving my Camaro with my knee's practically 'inside' my dash... i'll never come close to hitting my key.

      Wish I would have read these before complying with the "so called ignition recall". Waited 6 weeks for the part (2 keys on a ring), took my car in on a Saturday, for a "one hour fix". Now I have a remote with a flip key cut off & a key and ring hanging toward my knee! Nice quality GM. I could have had the spare keys mailed to me and made my own decision on this issue.

      If I drove in a sleeping position it may be an issue, there doesn't seem to be any common sense applied to this.

        If they're sitting that close to the steering column to be able to hit the keyfob with their knee, I guarantee if they get in an accident and the steering wheel air bag deploys they're going to get clobbered.

          And what I meant is -- where is personal accountability? I was taught to sit further away from the steering column because of the air bag. It's not GM's fault these folks can't position themselves correctly in the vehicle. Just can't engineer vehicles around stupidity.

      It should be required by law if you're thinking of buying a GM product that you have to get checked for severe mental illness. We all knew GM made junk for decades now, but this at least put things into perspective for the bowtie fanboys and squashed a lot of their morale.

        Besides reliability, workmanship, and customer service, this is another reason I wen from US to Japanese cars. A defect know for a decade that could kill (and has) people was put off to maximize profit. Japanese automakers actually care about their customers and cars.

        They are just being careful with this one. The ignition is mounted very close to the driver knee if the driver has the seat all the way forward. The ignition actually feels pretty beefy in these cars and the key style is the switch blade style that comes out of the fob. When the key is inserted in the ignition the attached fob sticks straight out of the ignition. This recall is merely playing it safe because of the location of the ignition and the length of the key/fob assembly.

          Here's a brilliant design/engineering idea, don't put the ignition so close to a drivers knee. If there are multiple confirmed cases (by GM) of accidents due to this issue then the car suffers from poor design.

      Another recall? Pretty soon you'll have to start shopping for recall insurance when buying a product from Taxpayer Motors - you'll lose so much of your own time taking your garbage car back to get it to operate safely.
