A supercar as raw as the McLaren F1 needs a talented driver to get the most out of it. All the more so for the racing version. Fortunately Justin Bell is just such a driver.

The son of five-time Le Mans winner Derek Bell is a proven race winner in his own right, taking GT2 class titles in the FIA GT championship and the 24 Hours of Le Mans. In fact he came third overall (teamed up with his dad and '88 winner Andy Wallace, taking second in the GT1 class) at Le Mans in 1995 behind the wheel of the McLaren F1 GTR. And thanks to BMW (whose engine powers the McLaren) and GoPro, he's been reunited with the beast at Mid-Ohio, one of the finest road courses America has to offer.

Because this video is a GoPro promo, the action-cam company strapped its devices on all over the legendary supercar-turned-racer from Woking, inside and out. The resulting footage is sports car racing like you've never seen it before. Check it out in the video below. Just don't mind Justin's grunting and occasional NSFW language.

22 year old design, and it's still an amazing vehicle, even by current super car standards.

Yeah, all F1's have the BMW V12. From what I remember, it wasn't the first choice when developing the F1, but I'm glad whoever it was turned McLaren down because IMO it's the greatest engine BMW ever made.

It was Honda. Back in the heyday when they were teamed up in F1. Honda would have made a damn good engine too.

No, I didn't know that. I thought the engine was an in-house design.

There is no sound better than an NA engine. With that said, I love the whine of a race tranny.......squealing of the brakes........perfect symphony!

I was lucky enough to see the longtail GTR's at Laguna Seca in 1997 when the FIA series visited. I can still see & hear them (Davidoff & Fina liveries). To this day, I don't think I've heard a better production based race car in the flesh. In a word - it's ANGRY.

I got two laps in it as well at IRP for Car and Drivers 50th Anniversary. It is an amazing car even today.

The 12C/650S is a perfect modern sports car and the P1 finally pushed the car world beyond the Veyron, but if I had to choose a McLaren, it'll always be an F1. That amazing Bavarian sound...

This is a good illustration how sound does in fact contribute to the drama of racing.

The F1 has been my favorite car since I first started getting into cars and Need For Speed 2 was a new game. Loved that thing. 231mph in a naturally aspirated car from 1995... wow.

I have a framed picture of me sitting in that car right before blasting around the track at 120mph! One of the best days of my life. I keep the picture because no one who knows that car believes me.
