Honda's upcoming Civic Type R is one of our most anticipated models of the next year – and we probably won't even get it in North America. And yet, each time we see it, the five-door just seems so menacing and purposeful. An all-but-undisguised version has just been spotted by our photographers testing on the back roads in Germany. If this signals what to expect, then the project appears to be coming along nicely.

Compared to the concept shown at the Geneva Motor Show, this prototype looks even meaner. Check out those big, blistered front fender extensions, taller wing, deeply sculpted front air dam and 10-spoke gold wheels. The Type R certainly certainly isn't hiding its performance intentions, and it has no reason to. Under the hood, we know it packs Honda's new 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder pumping out 276 horsepower, which is likely connected to a six-speed manual.

Now, if only Honda could find some way to get this machine across The Pond and into the our hot little hands. There has already been an online petition begging the Japanese automaker to find a way, and after recently enjoying an all-too-brief prototype drive, we're ready to sign up.

Spoke with Honda H.P.D. at this year's Eibach event and was told, directly, to "be patient" as what's coming "will be worth it" and it will be on the "next Civic's platform". They specifically stated that Honda is "listening" and they "get it". That said, they wouldn't budge an inch on anything about the CTR coming here, but they also wouldn't deny it. I spent at least 20 minutes venting my spleen about how Honda needs to actually do something sooner than later and to stop giving us watered down products. They all laughed and said, "we feel the same way, again, just wait." So take all that with a grain of salt, but they were 100% on the same page that it's long overdue for Honda to get a clue and give us something to write home about.

It does not look final, it is the same prototype as seen before. Production car is said to have LED daylights integrated in headlamps. Besides how do you know it is really a Honda? the logo is covered!!! we cannot be sure ;-)

Exactly. This is the same car from last summer. It's not the production car bodywork.

Benchmarking against a45 is a good sign, maybe we get 350HP after all?

For all the critics of the look...you missed the point. Honda needs a refresh in this country. I would trade in my SI in a new york minute for the look and the power plant. If I can't do that I guess its the dodge challenger. Honda....show us the R Type.

I may not like the North American Civic, Civic si for a Dodge Challenger is a little like trading in dinner from The Olive Garden in exchange for Russian prison rations. Neither are particularly great, but the lesser of two evils is preferred.

Funny but I wonder if all the petitioners are ready to pony up $35,000-40,000 for a Civic...

It screams "BOY RACER" way too loudly. I realize Type R's aren't supposed to be completely subtle but am I the only one who thinks this is too much?

It would figure that Honduhblog would anticipate this ghastly, ugly, vomit inducing piece of dog doodie. Real people wouldn't give this wretched thing the time of day. Honduh - just like Apple Idiots - we don't know why we keep buying this crap, but its the best crap you can buy.

The Civic EX runs about one second behind the Sonic LTZ in Motor Trend's figure-eight test...on same width rubber. Civic has some catching up to do! http://www.motortrend.com/roadtests/hatchbacks/1204_economy_five_door_hatchback_comparison/?fullsite=true

How is it that the same company that designed the gorgeous new NSX can also produce a design as god awful as this one? I hope its just bad camo, but I doubt it.

Hondas sell in pitiful numbers in the EU. Where did you get this notion? Nissan, Toyota and even Mazda trounce Honda in Europe. Maybe you're talking Honda scooters?

I'm saying in Europe, people love hatchbacks. Also, for the FIRST YEAR EVER, Mazda has sold a small amount more than Honda did. Prior to this year, Honda held the lead over Mazda. Read any review from a European car magazine, and they will verify that this Civic Type-R in pre-production models, has driven like one of the best hot hatches of all time. With Honda's new EarthDreams turbocharged engine lineup, and new product blitz, they will continue to gain sales.

That is one of the worst looking vehicles I've ever seen. It's almost hilariously ugly. And it's not just the tacked on crap either, the basic body shape is hideous. I don't care how well it functions, I would never drive that. So please Honda, by all means bring the drivetrain over to NA, but you can leave the body in Europe.
