Cool comes in multiple flavors. One one hand, we have the sophisticated attraction of svelte design and the efficient use of power. Of course, on the other hand there is the allure of being the bad boy and going against the grain. That is part of the appeal of rat rods. Ideally, they are built without rules to an owner's specific tastes, and this widened and heavily modified 1947 Chevrolet pickup rod is a perfect example of that spirit.

Coming down the highway with a bent grille, rusted body and pouring smoke, it looks like the pickup from hell. It backs up the looks with some very impressive mechanicals too. Owner Troy Gubser says that the truck packs a Ford Power Stroke diesel with to 42 pounds of boost that runs out of 8-inch exhaust stacks at the back. He claims it managed 505 horsepower and 885 pound-feet of torque on the dyno. To harness all that power, this hot rod has a ZF five-speed manual gearbox with a ceramic clutch and short-throw shifter. Plus, it has cool little features like a doorbell on the tailgate that operates an air horn.

You might not expect a truck like this to actually be useful, but it has a fifth wheel coupling to haul an RV around drag races and car shows. The air suspension also probably keeps the ride fairly comfy when Gubser wants it to be. Scroll down to check out this beastly rat rod pickup and watch it engage in some diesel drag racing. Warning, there is some NSFW language.

Funny and cool, until I saw the smoke. That's where it becomes disgusting.

the "girly men" aren't the ones who have to show off in obnoxious and messy ways as if they're still insecure adolescents.

holy ****, would all you ******* complaining about rolling a little coal go shove your priuses up your own asses? Not a single one of us want to hear you complaining about this guy, could you take 2 trucks to widen one to drop in a completely different engine and achieve something you truly wanted like that. No. So stfu and give the guy a compliment.

Right on bro! This is the world we live in today. A little smoke and the liberals are up in arms. They are too ignorant to realize that the smoke discharge is only at high or full throttle. They would rather drive a Tesla with Lithium-Ion batteries sourced in China by underpaid workers than actually pick-up a wrench and build something on their own.

Jeez, maybe cool in some way, but seriously who the heck would want to be stuck behind this filthy thing. I see more and more of the Diesel Stack guys even here in CT. Whats the point, other than being loud, obnoxious, noxious, and unnecessary? And I do love a good rat rod, but the counter culture smoke deal is just plain stupid and pointless.

Love the smell of diesel and oil. If he was in front of me I would drive up and give him a thumbs! How are you on a car website yet hate the smoke? I just don't get it?

It's no surprise that car manufacturers are so reluctant to bring diesels over...this just reinforces to an uninformed public that diesel = stench + black smoke. Thanks, pal.

It's a ratty looking old truck to the general non-car-person and isn't going to hurt new diesel truck image in the slightest, and to car people they'll view it the same as every other diesel that rolls coal. Don't think this will have any effect on anyone's perceptions.

@ Tweaker and domingorobusto , obviously I'm not being literal. I think it begs the question why? Why so loud, why so much smoke, why truck nuts, and all these other pointless statements owners seem to try to make. Why bikes so loud my kid has to cover his ears when 20 of em roll by. It's no better, and possibly worse than the kid with the slammed out Honda that has a stereo that can wake people 2 blocks away. Maybe I'm getting too old to "get it" but I find them all pointless statements from people not intelligent enough to make a sensible or relevant statement... so instead they make their vehicle socially unacceptable and consider it "a statement" that they belong. Coal Rollers... wow, cool... you're sure smokin us out with that thing... color me impressed.

There are a couple guys in my town with newer diesel pickups that they've converted to straight pipe exhaust. No emissions control, just clouds of black smoke and a lot of noise. I don't know why they think it's cool. It's just obnoxious. This guy has a classic truck so it never had any of that stuff on it, so I'll give him a pass, but I hope he doesn't gun the throttle when I'm right behind him.

I just wish they realized that rolling coal = wasted fuel that could be making more power. Yeah, you'll get a little black smoke when you up the tune, but a properly tuned high power diesel doen't really put out much smoke.

That is a beautiful truck. The owner/creator has more talent and skill than most of the liberal haters on this site. I guess if your a liberal you prefer your vehicles quiet and mundane. For you its better not to know that most of the lubricants and fuels in your vehicle are from fossil sources. Keep lying to yourselves. I'm surprised to see so many anti internal combustion comments? If you hate smoke, fire and the sounds of combustion why are you on this site? That's what automobiles have been doing for almost a century you liberal hypocrites! Stay off this site and go back to National Geographic. And don't worry about the smoke, Obamacare will pay for your health problems. If you new anything about automobiles you would know that Diesel is more efficient than gasoline and particulate emissions are very different than CO2.

You're so far off base. I love cars, however my politics has nothing to do with the obvious fact this thing is filthy and obnoxious. I have a Corvette and a Cooper S... yes I love driving. This thing in the article is just unnecessary and needlessly annoying to all around you.

Invest bucket loads of money to make it look like a junker. Even Hot Rod magazine jumped on this idiotic trend. That's why I canceled my subscription. If I want to look at junk vehicles I'll just drive past my local trailer park.
