BMW opened a whole Pandora's Box when it introduced the X6 back in 2008. Sure it made little sense, sacrificing all that "utility" for a little more "sport," but it's been a solid success for BMW – especially considering the nominal expense it cost to develop the X6 on top of the X5 on which it's based. Little wonder that, while BMW has already followed up with a smaller version in the form of the X4, other automakers are starting to catch up. And that includes Mercedes-Benz.

Mercedes-Benz Concept Coupe SUVThe German automaker is preparing to launch a new MLC, based on the M-Class but with a sportier silhouette, and previewed it with the Concept Coupe SUV at the Beijing Motor Show. But that's just the start, according to the latest report from Automotive News Europe.

Mercedes is reportedly considering spinning off an entire line of crossovers more for use on the road than off it. Which may go without saying for most crossovers on the market, but considering the Geländwagen with which Mercedes got its start in SUVs, would mean an even further departure than it has undertaken already.

Next in the pipeline could be a smaller coupe-style crossover based on the littlest member of the Benz SUV family, the GLA. The added model would likely be called GLC and give Mercedes another variant to spin off its new front-drive platform alongside the existing GLA, the CLA-Class four-door coupe and the European-market A-Class hatchback, not to mention the B-Class MPV.

Correction. AMC opened a Pandora's box. NOT BMW
      whatever

The GLA seems like a hatchback on stilts, similar to the X1. If they want to bring something like that over why don't they - ready for it - just bring the A-Classe over. Give it a 2-door option. Wow, I just saved MB millions! Where's my check?!

The X6 is a "solid success"? Sure about that? They sold 5,549 in the US last year. They cant give the damn things away.

You have to factor in the marginal cost per unit for the X6. How many units to net a profit when considering all that goes into producing, marketing, and retailing the vehicle? It may be that 5.5k units is more than enough considering how close the X6 is to the X5.

Aint no one making a profit on 5500 units, they arent Bentley or Ferrari. And even if they somehow miraculously did, not even BMW would call it a "solid success". Its absolutely a solid failure

Just go ahead and make a crossover convertible while you're at it. It was such a sales success for Nissan...

I think the "Crossover Coupe" thing can be done correctly (see Evoque). It's just that BMW has made such an abortion of it. Jury is out on Merc.

Oh hell why not call it the sports activity grand coupe? Also, please MB, you have to make a convertible version of it.

Too late! If someone really wants a goofy high convertible, they can still buy a new Murano convertible, but they better act quickly. They are flying off the dealers' lots.

If it came with a real transmission unlike the Subie Crosstrek's go-cart tranny it might sell to people other than young birders. Jim
