It appears that BMW is ready to take another step upmarket with a new concept flagship luxury sedan at the Beijing Motor Show at the end of April. The showcar is said to preview the company's rumored 9 Series, a sedan that would be positioned against top trims of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, like the rumored S600 Maybach.

According to Automotive News Europe, the concept sedan wears styling language adapted from the curvaceous BMW Pininfarina Gran Lusso Coupe (pictured above) shown at the 2013 Villa d'Este Concours d'Elegance in May. It rides on BMW's new, modular platform – codenamed G11 – for the company's largest cars, an architecture also expected to be shared with the next 7 Series and future Rolls-Royce vehicles. It's rumored to bring the weight of the 7 closer to the 5 Series, which would be several hundred pounds lighter when comparing the base models of both current vehicles. We spotted the next-gen 7 Series testing over a year ago, and both it and the 9 Series are expected to go on sale in 2016.

Unfortunately, at the moment there is no official information about the concept. "We don't have any official news yet on anything in Beijing," Julian Arguelles, BMW USA spokesperson, tells Autoblog. However, it's heartening to think that BMW might be adapting the gorgeous shape of the Gran Lusso for production.

I don't know about an even bigger sedan than this but you can bet good money on a 10 series coup (most likely what's pictured here)... At least I would, based on BMW's current mind set. Just imagine the SUV based on the new 9 series, escalade sized BMW.

BMW doesn't have the nuts to make a jaw dropping concept that actually reaches production. Leave that to Caddy and Mercedes-Benz.

Mercedes new S65-AMG Coupe is forcing BMW's hand. This mock-up wasn't even commissioned by BMW and now their taking it on tour. Rumor has it the hook-up with Toyota will produce a new Z5 and hardcore 6-series. This new coupe could take the place of the current, (bloated) 6-Series.

Wait shouldn't an odd number be a sedan?

"a new concept flagship luxury sedan at the Beijing Motor Show at the end of April" The 9 Series will be a sedan, but there are no photos of the concept yet. The picture is the Gran Lusso concept which they expect it to take cues from.

Exactly what I wanted to say. It looks like it has down syndrome, so dopey looking...Who is making these terrible designs?

One of the better looking concepts out of BMW recently, though I do wish they would take a hammer to the hand of the next designer who designs a car with fender vents. Enough with the fender vents already.

If there will be a 9 series, what will the 8 series be?

Most likely a Coupe based on the 7 series.

Why is this not an 8 Series? With BMW shifting all of the names around so that 2 doors are even numbers and 4 doors are odd numbers (with exception to the four door coupes), shouldn't this be an even number? Or is BMW now going to introduce the "World's First Two Door Sedan" just to give a big ole birdie to anyone trying to make any sense of all this.

By calling it a 9 series and having only 2 doors, doesn't **** up the whole odd numbers mean 4 doors and even numbers mean 2? If they do name this a 9, it makes renaming the 3 series coupe a 4 seems stupid.

Call it the 10-Series and use the Greek letter 10.

The look, especially of the taillights, is superb for BMW, but what else would you expect from a Pininfarina design? Not sure about the 9 designation, but BMW is being quite stupid in its' new confusing approach across the board in their naming strategy for their cars. I say build it as is and call it something else.
