Train Hits SUV Attempting To Cross Light-Rail Tracks
All four occupants of the car survived
A driver in Houston ran a red light and maneuvered around lowered gates at a railroad crossing. The attempt to beat a METRO light=rail train failed. Four people were hurt.
Houston's METRO Police release video of Wednesday's crash. In the video, the train hits the SUV and pushes the car down the tracks before coming to a stop. Everyone inside of the SUV survived, though all four occupants had to be treated at a nearby hospital for non-life threatening injuries, ABC13 reported.
They were lucky, out of the 2,000 collisions at train crossings that occurred in 2013, 251 people died and 929 were injured, according to Operation Lifesaver, a rail safety education organization. Operation Lifesaver also notes that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration found a motorist is almost 20 times more likely to die in a crash with a train then with another car.
