BMW is charting new territory with the 2 Series. No, not the two-door model – that's just the kind of rear-drive coupe for which the brand is known. But the Active Tourer (which only shares its series designation with the coupe) is a front-drive tall hatchback/MPV category buster, and that's not exactly what comes to mind when you think of Bimmers. As such, the 2 Series Active Tourer is bound to turn off some of the brand's faithful, but this latest M Sport kit could at least ease the pain somewhat.

The sport package for the Active Tourer packs all the usual suspects: a more aggressive aero kit, retuned suspension, blacked-out grille, 17- or 18-inch alloys and an interior with sports seats trimmed in blue-stitched Alcantara. Top all that off with an Estoril Blue paint job and you've got a compact family hauler that might look the part, and maybe handle a bit tighter, yet it naturally stops short of the full M treatment (or even an M Performance spec like you'd find in the M235i coupe). All of which is probably just as well, because that might be the only thing BMW purists would object to more than the existence of a front-drive BMW MPV in the first place.

Funny how the brand that no longer believes a coupe and sedan can share the same model number is ready to lump this thing in with the 2 Series.

"But the Active Tourer is a front-drive tall hatchback/MPV category buster" How is this a category buster? It's not defining a new category or market. Here in the states it was arguably the original Mazda5 (2006?) that was the category buster for the small frame, tall, front-drive MPV. There have been many since. This is BMW entry into an established market. Nothing "busting" about it, even if it's new expansion in BMW's lineup.

I agree but I don't see how the Mazda5 deserves any credit for creating a new segment. If you wanted to give Mazda credit, at least cite the MPV which came out much earlier.

I think he means it is busting the 2-series category.

I always wondered what my Plymouth Colt Vista would be like if it were built by BMW and now I know. It is actually a really useful size of car. But I bet it will be a little more expensive than the $11,000 I paid for the Plymouth Colt Vista.

This seems like a project vehicle they green lighted as an experiment. Those seats look very comfortable which might be the center this car was designed around. Tourer is a very appropriate name.

I can't wait for the Active Tourer sedan, the Active Tourer Coupe, the Active Tourer convertible, and the Active Tourer GT.

If by "sheep in wolf's clothing" you mean "pig with lipstick". This piece of trash kind of makes me want to vomit. I had so much respect for BMW before they started pulling sh*t like this. A slow, front-wheel drive mini-minivan, and they go and slap an M badge on it. Why not go the whole nine yards and have Ferrari make an MPV and slap the GTO badge on it.

Sweet! I love my bimmer 525 all wheel drive sedan. I might check this out next time if they offer all wheel (Xdrive) in it. Love the blue color too. If it's fast I will definitely check it out.
