The just-introduced Drive-E family of engines from Volvo has found a classy new home. The upcoming Volvo V40 D4 will come with the new powerplants that the Swedish automaker says will be the, "most powerful, lowest emission engine in its segment." How low? When fitted with a manual trasmission, it'll be just 85 grams of CO2 per kilometer, the equivalent of 3.3 liters per 100 km, or 71 miles per gallon with the 190-horsepower turbo diesel engine. Sure, that's using the lenient European efficiency test, but it's still an impressive accomplishment. To compare, the Toyota Auris Hybrid manages to spit out just 84 g/CO2 per km and the Prius puts out 89 grams in Europe.

Of course, the CO2 output increases if you opt for the more powerful 245-hp petrol turbo T5. Beyond the choice of engines, the new V40 will also come with either an eight-speed automatic gearbox or a six-speed manual transmission. According to Volvo's preliminary, if you opt for the V40 T5 with the 8-speed automatic, you'll be sending 136 grams of CO2 out the tailpipe every kilometer, or the equivalent of 40.5 mpg on the European cycle.

The most powerful, lowest emission engine in its segment


Volvo Car Group's new Drive-E powertrains – offering a world-class blend of drivability and low CO2 emissions – are now also available for the Volvo V40 and V40 Cross Country. The CO2 emissions of the 190 hp Volvo V40 D4 with manual gearbox are down to an outstanding 85 g/km – an offer no competitor is even close to matching.

"The Volvo V40 D4 offers a massive 80 hp more driving pleasure than other cars in the segment with CO2 emissions at that level. This is yet more proof that the Drive-E powertrains take efficient driving pleasure to a new dimension," says Michael Fleiss, Vice President Powertrain at Volvo Car Group.

Initially, the V40 can be equipped with two engines from the four-cylinder Drive-E engine family: the 245 hp petrol turbo T5 and the turbo diesel D4 with 190 hp. An 8-speed automatic gearbox contributes to the refined drive.

Outstanding mix

"Their outstanding take-off and responsiveness, combined with a smooth engine sound, will make the nimble V40 cars even more fun to drive, without compromising on modern customers' demand for superb fuel economy and minimised CO2-emissions," adds Michael Fleiss.

To deliver the desired responsive, smooth and fuel-efficient drivability, the Drive-E engines are teamed either with Volvo Cars' new eight-speed automatic gearbox or an enhanced six-speed manual tuned for improved fuel economy. Versions with the automatic gearbox have paddles on the steering wheel for manual gear shifting.

Diesel with ground-breaking i-Art technology

The D4 turbo diesel comes with 190 hp and 400 Nm of torque. The engine features world-first i-ART technology with pressure feedback from each fuel injector instead of using a traditional single pressure sensor in the common rail.

Each injector has an intelligent chip on top of it that monitors injection pressure. Using this information, the self-adapting i-ART system makes sure that the ideal amount of fuel is injected during each combustion cycle.

"The combination of injection pressure at 2,500 bar and i-ART technology gives the customer an engine with high performance, improved fuel economy and considerably lower emissions," says Michael Fleiss.

The diesel also features refinements such as a state-of-the-art twin-turbo, reduced friction and a smart valve solution on the cooling system for a more rapid heat-up phase after a cold start.

V40 D4 with fuel consumption at 3.3 l/100 km

Fuel consumption in a Volvo V40 D4 with a manual gearbox is down to 3.3 l/100 km (EU Combined), which corresponds to CO2 emissions at 85 g/km. The figure for the V40 Cross Country is 4.0 l/100 km (104 g/km) with the manual gearbox.

The four-cylinder petrol turbo T5 has 245 hp and 350 Nm of torque. Fuel consumption in a Volvo V40 with the 8-speed automatic is 5.8 l/100 km (136 g/km). All figures are preliminary.

Introduced in 2013

The first two-litre, four-cylinder Drive-E engines (called Volvo Engine Architecture [VEA] during the development phase) were launched in autumn 2013. From May 2014, all new Volvo models, except the XC90, will be available with engines from the new powertrain family.

      I bet that in real world the Prius gets a better milage. Still it is impressive. this engine could make a nice range extender. as a diesel it could run on (hemp) diesel or synthetic diesel fuels.

        @Smoking_dude One other thing, a better choice for a range extender would be the D2 Drive-E engine that will be released probably by the end of the year. It's less powerful (~130 hp) but even more efficient than the D4.

        Maybe, but that's very much in doubt given the 11 mpg difference on the Euro cycle I explained above. The other thing is that V40 D4 will accelerate from zero to 62 mph in 7.4 seconds, while the Prius takes 10.4 seconds. The V40 is in a different league in terms of power vs efficiency.

          The numbers are all combined city and highway. Volvo hasn't provided the other numbers for the V40 D4. The V40, like many non-hybrid cars in Europe, uses regeneration and start-stop, but you could still be right. For example, the S60 has a 2 mpg combined advantage over the Prius, but the Prius has a 5 mpg advantage in the city. The Prius could have the same 5 mpg advantage over the V40 (most likely it's much less), but that means the V40's advantage over the Prius on the highway would be over 20 mpg to account for its combined advantage of 11 mpg.

      Buying a diesel still chains you to Exxon market manipulation and pricing. The oil majors need $130 per barrel to be profitable. They've just cut back on CAPEX spending, meaning they can not or will not find new oil, to drive up prices? Get a REAL Hybrid or an EV, Prices are going to go UP.

      A diesel engine emits more CO2 per liter of fuel consumption than a gasoline engine, so you should use the consumption or mpg figures to compare efficiency. The Volvo V40 D4 at 71 mpg is more efficient than the Toyota Auris hybrid which consumes 3.6 l/100 km or 65 mpg on the Euro cycle. The Prius comes in at 3.9 l/100 km (60 mpg); 11 mpg short of the V40 D4. The Prius is even 2 mpg short of the V40's larger sibling, the V60 D4 Drive-E, which consumes 3.8 l/100 km (62 mpg) and emits 99 g CO2.

        I don't like the looks, the windshield is too raked , this is done to be aerodynamic and save fuel on the highway. Sure it's a good thing to save fuel but it bring uncomfort with a bad view to the outside. Except the grill, this ugly truck do not look as a Volvo. please Volvo bring vehicle with a cachet or I will keep my dodge endlessly.
