Georgia drivers are going to face a new law on the Peach State's roads, as a bill aimed at left-lane hogs has received near unanimous approval in the state's House of Representatives, passing 162 to nine.

The bill, colloquially called the "slow-poke" bill but officially known as House Bill 459, makes it a misdemeanor to hold up faster moving traffic by sitting in the inside lane of a freeway. Yes, a misdemeanor. The bill was introduced by Representative Bill Hitchens, a former state trooper.

"My reason for doing this is more for an educational opportunity for people who don't understand you're not supposed to ride 55, 60 mph in that left lane when you've got 15, 16, 17 people lined up behind you," Hitchens told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution's website.

According to The Athens Banner-Herald, drivers spotted by police slowing up traffic could face stiff penalties, with up to a $1,000 in fines and 12 months in prison. "I always say it's the manners your momma should have taught you; if someone pulls up behind you, you move to the right and let them by," Hitchens told MyFox Atlanta.

The bill still needs to pass the state senate before it can be signed into law by the governor.

The Brits are fascinated by the amount of "undertaking" we do in the US. Then they spend time in LA, Atlanta, suburban Washington, and within a day they are incensed by the lack of consideration so many American drivers have for lane discipline. In Europe, you pretty much take a beating by everyone if you're in the passing lane with your thumb up you butt. In the US we have CARAVANS in the left lane, making long distance driving frustrating as hell.

My favorite was in Va. when this teen in her SUV was laughing away on her cellphone while holding up the left lane of traffic. Most of us managed to get around on the right, but it was amazing to see cars stretched for over a mile behind this one person who could not maintain speed or even go the speed limit. Imagine the massive pile up that could have resulted and lives lost, absolutely amazing. Of course, I think this gives way to another problem. People who drive in the left lane, below the speed limit, then move over and speed up to the match the speed of people in the left lane. If you slow down, they slow down, you speed up, they do the same. Eventually you have to gun it to get by, then they speed up, get in the left lane, then sit there and block you in. I just don't understand the mentality of these people.

NOVA and 95....I thought it was just me. They seem to take 20 minutes to pass a slow moving semi in the left lane. Then after they finally pass, they proceed to speed up to 15 over....I really can't understand it.

It doesn't mean jack if they don't enforce it. Lots of states have less stringent laws, but NO ONE ever gets cited.

Laws, laws and more laws. Land of the Free my ass!!! Though I do I like this law, we need to start over with drivers education. They hand out drivers licenses way to damn easy in this country. And they never talk about stuff like this.

Probably because a lot of states are now handing out drivers licenses to illegals, who don't speak the ingles....

This bill will save countless lives due to road rage and is the reason for the stiff penalty. This is the prelude to faster speed limits. I champion this bill and encourage others here to act by contacting their local and state reps to propose such legislation. We will all benefit. Go to your state website and contact your reps. DO IT NOW! The next time you are behind one of these drivers, you will wish you had. You will be one miserable person.

In California you shouldn't be riding in the fast land unless you are doing at least 80mph unless there is traffic or weather conditions. I wish we would raise the speed limits even more than we already have on the open road like driving to Vegas or Phoenix. 100mph+ is not unreasonable in light traffic and good weather on a vast desert highway in a car built for it. They do it on Europe all the time with much narrower, windier roads.
