Even if you're the manufacturer responsible for producing them, you don't just hand the keys over to a seven-figure supercar to just anyone. You hand-pick just the right man for the job. But even then, you still don't want to give him a brand-new car. Which could be why when McLaren invited Chris Harris and his crew from Drive down to Abu Dhabi to capture the new P1, they put him in XP7 – a pre-production prototype that's undergone 40,000 hard miles of testing in extreme climates around the world.

Not that its well-worn nature would keep Monkey from enjoying himself, and from that shining through on film. So after a brief chat with chief test driver Chris Goodwin and a cruise around town to measure its manners, it was straight onto the Yas Marina circuit to wring its neck.

So what did Harris think of the McLaren P1? "I haven't driven a car like this before. I really haven't. Because there isn't another car like this. It's a different league even to a [Porsche] 918." Then he turns the traction control off. See what happens next in the video below. It's nearly a half hour long, but it's worth every second.

Remember when cars like this usually had of-the-shelf taillights.

Anything that can leave Chris Harris speechless has got to be good. Love the technical talk. THE definition of wicked fast.

When Chris disables the TC you know what the XP7 handles like? Ridge Racer. It's the very first Ridge Racer in the arcade (or PlayStation 1). Full throttle in, lift, yank the wheel into the turn, cock it back the other way, and full throttle out. It's magical.

Funny how much better looking it gets when you realize its performance potential. I admit the looks have grown on me, but I still think the front can be done better. The back of the car is epic, the nicest there is IMO.

Just an unbelievably beautiful car that is far better looking than the bland looking Porsche 918.

seriously, someone who calls the 918 bland can't be taken seriously. I love the P1 for it's purposeful design, it looks mean and futuristic at once, but the 918 is one of the most beautiful cars on this planet..calling it bland doesn't do it justice.

I have seen the 918 in person, it is kind of bland to be honest. I think the CGT is much better looking. If you were not a car person like we were, you would never give the 918 a second glance.

No way that guy is fcking annoying! Always cutting off the test driver! The look on the test drivers face says it all!

What are you on about? There's no way you watched the video. I didn't see one instance where Harris cuts off Chris Goodwin and at no time does Goodwin seem the least bit annoyed with Harris. It was an all around good test/review of the P-1.

Which is the most beautiful car money can buy? You have the LaFerrari which is just downright beautiful. Like you took a racecar off the track and made it street-legal while going all-out on the styling. You have the Porsche 918 Spyder which is beautiful in an elegant-sort of way. I mean, just watching the slow-mo shots in Chris Harris' test video makes you want to fire up the LP player and throw on some 12" of opera/orchestral while watching it. The lines on the car are just graceful no matter the angle you look at it. Then you have this. It's beautiful in an evil-looking way. The car just looks sinister like it wants to eat your heart out and take your soul. The car looks so dark and unforgiving. Like, "If you F up, i'm going to kill you". And this car should only be offered in black. And then you have the Veyron. The ex star-football player turn overweight with a beer-belly who shows up at the high school grad house-party even though he is in his late 20s. He walks in and is like, "hey guys, what's up"!? Everybody looks and responds with a look of disgust and an eye-roll like "gtfo dude". LoL

Perfectly said. Ideally, the Ferrari should only be offered in red, the Mclaren in black, and the Porsche in metallic grey or white with Martini livery. All three are different takes on beauty, Porsche taking the classic approach, conservative but tastefully delectable, Ferrari taking their racy, organic flowing design to its ultimate potential, and Mclaren looking like a 4 wheeled spaceship from a more advanced alien society with impeccable craftsmanship.

nicely written. A bit unfair concerning the Veyron since it is supposed to be a totally different type of car.
