"Because" might be a good response to our headline, but as a vintage (purists might call 'proper') Porsche 911 is hardly cheap, we suspect you'll need a better explanation than that. Enter Drive editor Mike Spinelli.

Spinelli sits down with Zac Moseley and Mick Prichinello from Classic Car Club Manhattan to first explain why the market for old, air-cooled 911s has gotten so hot over the past few years, and to discuss if it's a bubble that's about to burst. Following that, this video is really is just three guys sitting around talking about old Porsches for 35 minutes. Which, you know, we're pretty onboard with.

      If the bubble's about to burst that means the market for them is about to crash. So no, right now is NOT the best time to buy an air-cooled 911. Wait for the bubble to pop and the prices to tank. Then if you want one, pick one up cheap.

      I don't think nice pre 74 examples are going to see a bubble bursting. They are solid blue chip collector cars. I had hoped a nice 87 or 88 coupe would be affordable in the future, but they are getting a bit expensive. The main thing is to know what you are buying. I would recommend anyone interested in any Porsche dive into "Excellence" magazine.

      They were awesome back in the day but for that $$ there is even more to be had today. No reason to be a Luddite, water cooled is just better and more efficient.

      If you can affording the insanely expensive maintenance costs, then, by all means, buy a Porsche. I have been dissuaded by my buddy's experience (he bought a "deal" on an '85 aircooled 911, only to find out it needed a $5,000 valve job) and my son's Boxster travails (type the words "IMS bearing failure" into Google, to find out the expensive motor failures not being covered up by Porsche AG). Luckily, most of the defects with old Porsches have been fixed by now, but if you are considering one of these, get the Porsche 911 Buyer's Guide by Randy Leffingwell- it has excellent info on all the model years, and what problems to look for. Or better, join PCA and search Pelican Parts for a good used car- but mainly, get a PPI on ANY old 911 or 356!

        Can't speak for high mileage valve jobs, but the IMS problem can be proactively eliminated with the LN Engineering retrofit. $3k plus the nowadays affordable market value for early Boxsters = relatively practical mid-engine sports car.

        A valve adjustment cost around 300, which is a lot more reasonable. The valve "job" you are referring to is if the car has really high mileage and need to be torn apart and valve+guides replaced, miscel parts replaced, the work is around 30 hours, and with labor being ~$100/hr, the labor end up being the reason why it's that amount. Not like this is done every year or something, more like post 150k on the clock. At the rate these are driven, say 12k a year(and that means it's a daily driver), it takes 12 YEARS to have to do that again. Still think that 5k is expensive? BTW, the Boxster IMS failure is widely known, and it's about 2.5k job(if the IMS can be removed without opening up the engine) to permanently fix the problem, more if the engine need to be torn apart to insert the much beefier aftermarket IMS. Other than that the boxster really doesn't have anything maintenance cost related that is anywhere near as expensive. And if it gets to the point where the valve/guides in the 911SC/3.2 need to be replaced, might as well drop 5k more and get the entire engine freshened with better parts to make even more power. I'd do that I got a 3.2 Carrera. So no, at least for the two models you mentioned, I do not think they're "insanely expensive" to keep.

        I have had an '87 911 for 13 years and have driven in about 50k miles in that time (130k now on the clock). It's needed a starter, front brake pads, battery (or two) and some tires. I'll give ya that it takes a small fortune in synthetic oil, but would consider the overall cost of ownership low. I would also consider all of this general maintenance for any vehicle. I wish my other cars were this reliable and fun to drive!
