Toyota has announced a set of voluntary recalls covering 960,000 Prius, RAV4, Tacoma and Lexus RX350 models in the United States to address two separate issues. Worldwide, Toyota will have to recall a total of 1.9 million Prius cars.

The Prius recall affects about 700,000 2010-2014 models in the US, due to a fault in the motor/generator control ECU and hybrid control ECU software. It says that the current software could result in high temperatures on certain transistors and possibly damage them. When it fails, the error forces the car into failsafe mode. Toyota says that in rare circumstances, it could even shut the hybrid system down while the car is being driven.

Toyota spokeswoman Shino Yamada told Automotive News that the software update should take about 40 minutes, and dealers would start to be notified about affected vehicles today. She also told them that the first reported glitch occurred in May 2011 in the US when the system overheated and the car entered failsafe mode. The affected cars were built between March 2009 and Feb. 5, 2014, according to Automotive News. Toyota says that it has received no reports of accidents or injuries caused by either fault.

This is the third major recall for the third-generation Prius. In February 2010, Toyota recalled the model to fix an anti-lock brake software glitch, and in June 2013, cars were recalled in the US to fix the brake pressure accumulator.

The second recall affects 260,000 2012 RAV4, 2012-2013 Tacoma and 2012-2013 Lexus RX 350 models due to an electronic flaw that could cause the Vehicle Stability Control, Anti-lock Brake, and Traction Control functions to intermittently shut off. Scroll down for Toyota's full announcement.

Toyota Announces Voluntary Recall of Certain Toyota Prius, RAV4, Tacoma and Lexus RX 350 Vehicles

TORRANCE, Calif., February 12, 2014 – Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc., today announced that it is advising the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) of plans to conduct voluntary safety recalls of approximately 700,000 Model Year 2010-2014 Prius vehicles and, combined, approximately 260,000 Model Year 2012 Toyota RAV4, 2012-2013 Toyota Tacoma, and 2012-2013 Lexus RX 350 vehicles sold in the United States to address two separate issues.

The software's current settings could result in higher thermal stress in certain transistors, potentially causing them to become damaged. If this happens, various warning lights will illuminate and the vehicle can enter a failsafe mode. In rare circumstances, the hybrid system might shut down while the vehicle is being driven, resulting in the loss of power and the vehicle coming to a stop.

Toyota will update the skid control ECU software on certain 2012 Toyota RAV4, 2012-2013 Toyota Tacoma, and 2012-2013 Lexus RX 350 models in order to address an electronic circuit condition that can cause the Vehicle Stability Control, Anti-lock Brake, and Traction Control functions to intermittently turn off. If these systems are off, standard braking operation remains fully functional.

Toyota has received no reports of accidents or injuries associated with either condition.

As part of these recalls, owners of affected vehicles will receive a software update free of charge. Owners will be notified by first class mail when the software updates are available at their dealers.

      Toyota [sigh] Toyota...again with the recalls. It is after all a new year and is to be expected. Maybe some of the surplus you have in the bank should go to quality software engineers and true quality testing prior to shipment.

          Shhh. That's logic. You can't use that against the Toyota haters. Frankly if I'm going to have any recall, i'd rather it be an easy fix like that. I had an issue (not a recall though just a TSB) when I had my 2009 Tacoma shifting goofy out of first gear. Hooked up to the computer for 15 minutes. Fixed. Not big deal. Same people complaining about software probably wouldn't want to give up their fancy cars for a classic without all the fancy computer controlled gadgetry.

          Might be proactive, which I agree is good, but the amount of recalls they have been doing the last 6 or 7 years are getting pretty excessive. I think that speaks to where Toyota's quality has dropped. Maybe it has more to do with suppliers, but ultimately that still comes back to the management at Toyota.

          @rL-gT show me where nissan is not proactive, if it is CVt nissan have a ten year warranty, and no they did not recall the new CVt, but their is a fix, nissan recall the juke and their is a fix for the engine hesitation for pathfinder and other vehicles, but I guess you only read of nissan problem ,but never try to find out how quick nissan has resolve them, unlike toyota that have this issue for years, and I guess you see the brake problem with the hybrid camry recently that has been reported for years, yet you call toyota proactive. LOL

      Toyotas should come with a factory-trained technician in the trunk. At every recall, just open the trunk and let him get to work. When the work is done, back in the trunk he goes. With all the recalls, it will save many trips to the dealership and back.
