For drivers who want to benefit from the increased efficiency of a hybrid sedan but who don't want to look like they'd rather be hugging trees, Toyota has just announced its 2014.5 Camry Hybrid SE Limited Edition.

The SE LTD combines the exterior bits and pieces that make the SE look sportier than other Camry models with the 2.5-liter, four-cylinder engine, electric motor and nickel metal hydride battery pack of the Camry Hybrid. That means the Hybrid SE offers up 200 combined system horsepower to the front wheels, and we'd expect it to be rated at the same 40 miles per gallon city and 38 highway of the Camry XLE Hybrid.

Only 5,000 units will be produced between February and June of 2014, with an asking price of $27,845, which is about $700 more expensive than the base Camry Hybrid LE or $2,620 less than the Hybrid XLE that Toyota says shares a similar level of equipment. Sounds like a fair shake to us. Scroll down below for the complete press release.

New Limited Edition model combines sporty SE styling cues with renowned Toyota Hybrid efficiency
Only 5000 units to be produced

February 04, 2014
TORRANCE, Calif., (Feb. 4, 2014) - With a 40 mpg EPA city rating and expressive sport styling, the new Camry Hybrid SE Limited Edition offers fans of America's best-selling car an exciting new variant for the 2014.5 model year. This limited edition model combines many of the popular Camry SE grade's desirable appearance features with the renowned efficiency of Toyota Hybrid Synergy drive. The new Camry Hybrid SE Limited Edition is powered by a 2.5-liter, four-cylinder engine and hybrid system with nickel metal hydride battery that yields a total system output of 200hp.

Building on the Camry XLE Hybrid's equipment level, the new Camry Hybrid SE Limited Edition adds:
Camry SE front fascia, headlights, side rockers, rear valance, rear bumper, rear spoiler, and 17-inch wheels with low profile tires to embolden this sedan's exterior.

The Camry Hybrid SE's interior is also equipped with the four-spoke, leather-trimmed, steering wheel, silver interior trim, instrument panel, center stack trim, and front and rear seats from the Camry SE grade.

The Hybrid SE will be available in the full palette of Camry SE exterior and interior hues while unique badging will identify these special vehicles.

The 2014.5 Camry Hybrid SE Limited Edition arrives in showrooms later this month with an MSRP of $27,845. An available upgrade package ($2215) includes a moonroof and Display Audio with Navigation and Entune Apps Suite. Production of the Camry Hybrid SE Limited Edition will run from February to June of 2014 and will be limited to 5000 units.

This is good news, it shows that hybrids don't have to look dowdy. Might not be appealing on this car in particular, but it's a step in the right direction. And if that body kit and grille end up yielding the same fuel economy as the regular hybrid, then it shows there's no real case for spending the extra money to develop a new grille piece.

I don't think Toyota knows the meaning of the word "sport," at least not anymore.

Get behind the wheel of a Camry, press the pedal to the metal and wait for it to take off with a roar and a surge of acceleration. By the time it does you WILL be older! A LOT older!

Calling Camry "sporty" is like calling Audi's cars "luxury" Ain't gonna happen.

The words "Sport" and "Camry Hybrid" in the same sentence. What a riot!! That's as good as "thrilling" and "Maytag" used together.

The camry hybrid is the fastest in its class by a huge amount, it's faster than the fusion hybrid, the accord hybrid, the sonata hybrid...and faster by at least a second in 0-60, compared to diesels like the passat TDI it's almost three seconds faster to 60. It's no sports car but it's the lightest and fastest car in its class by a mile. Comparing it to something actually sporty is pretty stupid because those cars don't get 40mpg, this is by far the lightest and fastest drive in its class.

there are three words in the title of the article that should not be used in the same sentence: Toyota, Hybrid and Sport
