The Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class basically invented the four-door coupe niche when the first generation was unveiled in 2004. While it had less practicality than a traditional sedan, it made up for it with tons of style. The second generation continued the lineage in 2010, albeit with a less bulbous shape than the original. The refresh for the second-gen CLS has been recently spied, with an emphasis on improving the interior and adding new lighting.

The spy photos show off a redesigned front end with a one-bar grille and Mercedes' new Active Multibeam LED headlights. The system monitors what is happening in front of the car 100 times a second and adjusts the light accordingly by manipulating the individual LEDs. There is also an altered rear bumper and modified taillights, if you can make them out through the caked snow.

Mercedes' larger COMAND infotainment screen debuts in the interior and makes the old system look tiny by comparison. COMAND's button layout has also been altered slightly for the new system and has more chrome trim for a bit of bling to go with the new tech. There is also a new multi-function steering wheel to help control it all.

A nine-speed automatic transmission has been rumored for the updated CLS, but Mercedes has not said when the refresh will debut.

RAB The new big screens on CLA, C and now the CLS are a deal breaker for me - I really do not feel that they add to the flow of the interior. I have been a Benz buyer for some time and am looking forward to the next generation E- Class - but I will be "out of here" if they continue w/ the "big screen" routine in all of thier new and refreshed models.

I've always liked the CLS, but I really wish they'd make it look just a little more coupe-like. Rear suicide doors would be a great addition, with an integrated handle for both doors that made it look like one big door. Or alternately just hiding the rear door handle would do a lot for the look.

I love MB´s new design language and how they are redoing their entire line. I love the new C-class, In the case of this CLS, the exterior seems to flow really great but inside adding the ipad to the old interior just doesn't work for me. I would not buy any other other MB until its had been completely redesigned.

The original sedan/coupe was invented in 1968. Jaguar XJ, they just didn't call it a coupe.

I like the new interior. I was never a fan of the interiors on the last generation of Mercedes cars. New C class is stunning, Give it a DCT, AWD, and a V8 TT to make the ultimate daily driver.

Then that means Jaguar didn't invent it. M

Then that means Merc invented a name, not the 4-door coupe itself. This is what the Germans have always been good at- marketing. Having said that, 4 door anything = SEDAN. It's funny how people fall for marketing.

They didn't invent it at all. The original sedan/coupe was the 1968 Jaguar XJ

It looks like the grill is poking out oddly, like some sort of sucker-fish looking for prey...

i hope that they can pack another 2 or 3 lines of LED's across the front because 3 rows of LED's just simply isn't enough! Then add in the LED lit star mark and ooooh yeah! That wouldn't be tacky at all.... all classy!

Glad to see they're toning down the ridiculous slab-fronted 300SL throwback nose. That completely ruined the entire range for me. The E550 shown the other day was handsome, and this looks to be as well.

Has to be the most funky camo I've seen lately. It looks like one of those really tacky mod jobs you see on some little punks car. Haha.

I like the new steering wheel but that touch screen looks out of place in the CLS
