Infiniti is desperate to position itself as a brand for performance enthusiast. It's tried to create that impression by attaching its name to the Red Bull Racing team, by sprucing up the G37 Coupe and G37 Convertible as part of its lack-luster Infiniti Performance Line, and by bringing Sebastian Vettel on board to create a special edition FX crossover. But the Japanese luxury brand knows it's going to need something more comprehensive if it's going to go up against BMW and its M models, Mercedes and its AMGs, or Audi and its Quattro GmbH-tuned RS range.

That's why the Q50 Eau Rouge concept unveiled just last week at the Detroit Auto Show was so important to the marque. But Infiniti has more in store than just a concept. Nissan desires to put the Q50 Eau Rouge – named after the notoriously challenging turn at the Spa Francorchamps circuit in Belgium – into production with a 500-horsepower engine. But in speaking to Automotive News, Infiniti chief Johan de Nysschen hinted at more good news to come.

That could include a performance version of a new flagship sedan Infiniti is said to be working on, positioned above the current Q70 to fill the void left by the discontinued Q45 that capped the brand's range before it shifted its entire naming scheme behind it. The flagship sedan would need some serious muscle to challenge the likes of the Mercedes S63 AMG and Audi S8, but Infiniti seems bent on getting there. To cap it all off, Infiniti has long been rumored to be working on a halo sports car. Whether they'll all carry the Eau Rouge name, the IPL badge or some sort of other designator remains to be seen, but we'll enjoy seeing this development progress.

why does it take infiniti so long to get something out? bolt on a supercharger tighten the suspension and paint it Trans motor is plenty strong enough.. G35 w a paxton will easily crank out 450hp at the wheels. reliably.

These pictures suck. The car was very well done. Saw it at NAIAS this year, it was pretty interesting.

Nissan and Infiniti need a small sports sedan. Younger educated buyers want small sporty sedans. G/Q series aren't too big but I think the brand could use a smaller performance oriented sedan.

After exaggerating the lines of the beautiful G37 to cartoon proportions in the Q50, and jacking up the price for EQUIPPED versions by thousands of dollars, it only makes sense to glue some cladding on to give it that REAL Hot Wheels look. This'll REALLY pull those BMW drivers in!

Maybe if they share the gtr engine it can bring the price of both of them back down. Gtr has gone into the stratosphere with pricing. How would they put that engine, or a similarly powered turbo 6 into a more luxurious car and charge 10's of THOUSANDS less than a gtr? Maybe dropping awe can save them a bit? M5 is about 550hp if I remember correctly and costs 90k to start. That is 11k cheaper than a new gtr.

You just compared an M5 SEDAN to a GTR coupe. Yeah you're done here.

I think you didnt read enough. I wasnt comparing those two directly. Wouldn't this q50 sit between an m3 and a m5 both size and horsepower wise? Yet they have a gtr pricespriced higher than both by a significant amount. I was just saying that they already charge a higher than m5 price for a cheaper interior, less luxurious coupe, so if they made this car and undercut the gtr it would be quite weird. It would be similar of BMW bringing out a new m6 that is cheaper than an m3.

We all know Infiniti is truly capable of putting out a performance vehicle (GTR) regardless if you want to call it Nissan or not. . Someone at the top just refused to see the justification but that's passed now. Bring on the Eau Rouge with 500 ponies.. I will gladly buy one.

Infiniti already is the brand for performance enthusiasts. At least those in the know. The G37 has been an awesome performer since it's inception. While the Q50 isn't as revolutionary, as long as you get the mechanical steering it is still a wonderful performer. The FX have always been incredibly well performing CUV's. The performance credentials of Infiniti are well established, even if the brand is less recognized.

The g37 is an awesome performer? Compared to what? While the fx is actually a decent performer, it's horrifically ugly. There is a reason you rarely see the good model, it just looks terrible and nobody in their right mind is willing to spend that much and look that bad. Need i mention that beast of an SUV based on the armada? Voted in msn's top ten vehicles not to be caught dead in. Good luck getting people to buy tricked out infinites priced near CTS V's, AMG's and M series cars. Right now infinite literally does nothing right. I think this new car looks pretty good which is a nice change, but i'm sure the price range will make it a poor seller.

MT and other says it steering feel good, it drives good, so yes the G37 is a performer, the Q50 is faster 0-60 than most of the car in its class, stop faster in braking distance, it corners faster than the Lexus in the MT test, the problem the Q50 has is the testers does not like the DAS.

@nxsrules, in most test, IS350 beats g37/q50, that is not true,Q50 beats the lexus, in speed (0-60), braking and cornering and fuel efficiency, but feel in steering feel and driving feel the IS350 was given the edge, check motor trend IS350 Vs Q50S. http://www.motortrend.com/roadtests/sedans/1308_2014_infiniti_q50s_vs_lexus_is350_f_sport_comparison/
