Seeing a model as long-lived as the Lotus Esprit evolve over time generally requires some clever photography or graphical work, kind of like this. This video doesn't require any of that trickery, though, because it features every single model year of Espirt in one glorious row of awesome British cars.

Taken at the 2013 Lotus Festival at Brands Hatch in the UK, it features Esprits from 1976 all the way to its last model year in 2004. It really puts into perspective the slow evolution of the mid-engined, wedge-shaped Lotus, as it went from a very 1970s design to something decidedly more modern.

We've got the full video below, which starts with a red 1976 model, travels down the line to a silver 2004 Esprit, and then all the way back to the original. Take a look, and let us know what you think.

The comments about Lotus reliability issues are somewhat incorrect especially with the MY1989 and up cars. These cars came with GM multi port fuel injection and DIS ignition as GM was now the owner of Lotus, and while the Loti faithful bemoaned the trans am steering wheel with the first ever fitted air bag on these cars , the fact is that lotus's became very reliable, safer and extremely fast. They were one of the fastest production cars in its day as well as the ability to out handle most every exotic out there. Add to the fact that Ferrari builds more cars in 2 years than Lotus built Esprit's in it's entire 27 plus year run , it makes for something quite unique. It is the most fun you can have with your cloths on!

The Esprit is probably the first car that really made me care about cars. Seeing Roger Moore and Barbara Bach evade a machine-gun-firing helicopter in their Lotus Esprit, and then launching it off a pier, was just amazing. Like Aston Martin, Lotus made a proper James Bond car.

The Pretty Woman Esprit (and Basic Instinct, same model) is the Turbo SE that you can see at 23 seconds in the video.

I am not sure why I drooled over these as a kid. Now, I see a fairly simplistic and unattractive old sporty (vs. super, as I used to think of it) car.
