The Tesla Model S electric car (Tesla).
Tesla Motor Company, maker of the Model S electric car, is recalling 29,222 wall charger adapters following reports of overheating in owners' garages.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced the recall Tuesday morning. Tesla said the problem lies in the Universal Mobile Connector (UMC) adapters, which can lead to the adapter, cord or wall outlet overheating during charging. The danger was discovered when a garage caught fire in California in November. It has since resulted at least five incidents that were reported to NHTSA's complaint database.

"These are very rare events, but occasionally the wiring isn't done right," Tesla CEO Elon Musk said, according to Bloomberg. "We want people to have absolute comfort, so we're going to be providing them with an upgraded adapter."

The new adapter will include a thermal fuse that will shut off charging if overheating is detected, Musk said. Tesla sent a software update to its customers to deal with the overheating issue back in December, which was designed to trigger a 25 percent reduction in charge current when it sensed a potential overheating.

Tesla said about 2.9 percent of Model S buyers have returned their UMC adapters because of defects.

I live in Silicon Valley. All the hot shots around here have to own a Tesla. Give me a gasoline engine any day over one of these electric toy cars. These people are not a cool as they think they are.

Another government debacle. Obama has spent the hell out of our tax dollars. GM bailed on billions of our money. The unions get .17% share & we get the shaft. Solyndra folds, Fiskars takes the money & runs, thanks a lot mr. Obama. Sure glad you're on our side, especially since Fiat has gotten the whole pie, now. Glad we could help. I just wish I'd have had some Vaseline.

I believe the other "setback" was when Tesla's safety record showed its incidence of fire is one fourth that of the rest of the industry. "Setback" does not compute. Tesla has demonstrated eagerness and action in addressing the extremly few issues that have occured. Your cute "Another Setback for Tesla" is an example of misinformation / reader manipulation. The so called "Setback" represents one more opportunity for Tesla to keep building owner loyalty. The "setback will be a" dip in the stock as Tesla attracts more and more owners and stockholders. Sorry guys I thought you Auto section just sucked; then I started reading your comment section. Sounds like most of these knuckleheads lean in whichever direction you push them. By the way morons, I CAN afford a $100,000 car but chose to by a piece of crap top of the line Honda Accord because I'd rather put the other $70,000 in things like Tesla stock. My suggestion is to at least to attempt earning a GED and then read what the experts like the automotive press and consumer reports and the NHTSA have to say.

I find your comments hilarious but sad. I to can also afford a $100,000 vehicle but choose to drive a Ford truck that was built while resisting government intervention. Obviously education has nothing to do with common sense. Even those without a GED know better. Gee, if you have an extra $70,000 and you invest it in Tesla, I would suggest finding someone that actually knows where to put it.

I read the comments. How can so many people find fault with this terrify car. Obviously none of them own or have had any experience with one. The plug in works fine but if there is faulty wiring in the house it can cause fires the same as an electric stove, or any other electric appliance. I own a Tesla and drove from Washington State to the southern California , great trip. Most trouble free and finest car I've ever owned. Yes I have garage plug ins in both states, no problems so far. I installed them correctly. Bye the way Tesla has already repaid the government loan.

Anyone hear the funny about the people who purchased those hybrids and electric cars? The states lost so much money on gas taxes they are going to tax you more to make up for the loss. Funny thing is they really are. Do an Internet search. So it nice you saved the world from the evil gas users.

That's CA, their answer to everything is either a new law or raising taxes. Until they end up bankrupt like Detroit. A few cities have already filed as well. Also they destroyed the older cars, and the fool in the WH gave people money for their old cars. They replaced them with economy cars, so the fuel useage has dropped. In fact American fuel usage has been dropping for several years, yet no drop at the pump. MARC

A $35k BMW will cruise at 140 mph all day long. A tesla can only go 60 miles at 95 mph, then you have to recharge for an hour. That averages out to 45 mph in a $120,000 car. A 1960 vw bug cardio better than that! Tesla is a poser sports car.

It's not 16,000 batteries. There are slightly more than 7,000 in a Model S. And the Model S beats an M5 on the drag strip. I have not had any instances where I can't keep up with a BMW on the highway, at speed.

Tesla stock price going up during bad news, has nothing to do with reality. Its all about perception or deception. This stock is where most rich/greedy liberals have place there bets that they can fool the masses. Even though they claim it will help the environment, they forget electricity is manufactured by extracting all gifts created by god. Unless you're a statue, you will eventually harm the environment by your consumption. Face reality, from craddle to grave, you will consume. And if you don't consume you'll cease living. I wonder how many carbon credits tesla has purchased from god, excuse me, Al Gorzeera?
