Speeding kills.

That's the message the New Zealand Transport Agency hopes viewers will take to heart after seeing their latest public service announcement. It serves as a stark reminder of what losing even a little extra reaction time can do.

In the ad, a man speeding down the road sees a car about to pull out in front of him. The two cars freeze as the drivers about to crash speak to one another. The driver about to be T-boned begs the speeding driver to avoid him, but he can't. He's going too fast. The ad ends reminding viewers to slow down. Other drivers make mistakes.

The video has now been viewed over 4 million times since it was posted six days ago. Commenters on the video seem to have taken the message to heart

"Sometimes I make mistakes, which is why I like reminders like this. Very well done," one YouTube user commented. "Driving time is boring time. Please help keep it that way."

"Crawls right under the skin," another posted.

Speeding is something we've all probably done behind the wheel, but speeding can kill. A 2009 National Highway Traffic Safety Administration study found that speed is one of the most prevalent factors in car crashes. In 2007, 31 percent of all fatal crashes were speeding related, resulting in 13,040 fatalities.

      People get hit by trains because they are inattentive, as well. Also, I had to "floor it " to avoid an accident once, so speed save me fom an accident, but of course no stats on that because nothing happened.

        Been there myself, I've often said "speed doesn't kill its the idiots not paying attention to the road, just doing something plain stupid"

      Looked to me like the guy with the kid should have waited for the other driver to pass before pulling out in front of an oncoming vehicle.

        That's the point. The guy pulling out made a mistake, but the guy speeding will still wish he'd been going the speed limit. Don't speed because people make mistakes. It's called being human....

        Yes, the guy should have waited for the other car to pass.....but according to the video, the other car was going in excess of 100 mph. If it had been going at a reasonable rate of speed, it would have not been anywhere close the the man that was pulling out.

          Pause the video at 0:51. You'll see that the speedometer measures km/h. He's traveling at 103 km/h (64 mph) which is under the speed limit for most rural highways in the US.

          He's going about 68, which is too fast for most rural roads. Usually it's like 40 mph or so. MARC

        That's the point. He made an error in judgement, and it will cost him and his child their lives. The other driver made a decision to speed, not a mistake.

      I think it's a powerful PSA. And yes...we all need to drive defensively, and not assume that everyone is going to follow the rules of the road.

      If the speeding driver was going the speed limit he would not reach the person pulling out of the side street before he is safely in front of him. When you pull out of a street you are basing your timing on the posted speed limits.That is why there are speed limits.It is pure physics people. Follow the rules of the road they are made for everyone not everyone but you.
        • 1 Year Ago
        @mrspbj
        you don't pull into traffic based on a posted speed limit---------------you enter traffic based on WHEN and IF the road is clear!

        What are you talking about, if you pull out 5 meters in front of me and I'm boing 40 kmh you will be hit! You make no sense, so take your senseless knowledge of physics along with the pole that holds that flag and shove it you idiot!
          • 1 Year Ago
          @Eddie
          Why is that? Tell me Eddie Spaghetti - why is it not possible to stop from 24 MPH in 16 feet? It's definitely "possible" says physics - not likely, but possible. Eddie Spaghetti just got owned again.

        Many, many years ago in Driver's Ed., they showed us a video that basically said that most accidents are due to both drivers doing something wrong. It is sort of like being "at the wrong place at the wrong time." - many accidents would not occur if only one driver was doing something wrong, but throw in the second one doing something wrong and BAM! a crash.

        Going at a reasonable speed allows drivers reaction time based on other drivers' mistakes. It would end up with honking and yelling instead of dead people.

        What's stupid is speeding so fast you have zero reaction time.

          Pot calling the kettle black!. SHE made a typo (fells for feels); you are illiterate enough to use the word "FAIR" when the correct word is "FARE." Only an imbecile would call a stranger names, demand they do something when they have no idea of the person's situation, and arbitrarily decide that person or a member of their family is overweight. You have no way of knowing if the person you just insulted is legally blind, paralyzed, crippled, or otherwise unable to operate a motor vehicle. IMO, her comment was valid and to the point regarding how something as simple as this video can have a positive impact on lives. Other comments show that the writer is wasting oxygen that could be better used.

          So she made a typo. Good Lord, is that any reason to attack her, you rude, obnoxious troll? And as long as you think you're so perfect, I wish you'd learn to use punctuation properly, and the word you want is "fare" not "fair."

        Instead of nagging, just don't get in the car with him. Refuse to go anywhere when he drives. It's for your own safety too. You can't protect him and those he may hit. It won't work to nag.

          Your colorful language may irritate, But the answer is correct. I loaned my wife the car for a week, and she discovered that it cruises as 100mph, you aren't speeding, it is the cars sweet spot. I can't believe these crazies that think 100 mph is some ungodly uncontrollable death speed. I draft trucks at that speed and save millage as well. Why does everyone assume you will hit someone else. If it is there fault and will cause less damage to your car you would. But it is usually better to just go around the idiot.

      Danny said to Ann: It's people driving to slow in the left lane. You nailed it right on the head. You certainly possess a "special" intelligence. Uh, Danny ... it's not 'TO' slow ... it's 'TOO' slow. Yes, Ann does possess a special intelligence. One that somehow has escaped you. It's called 'literacy'. Now, to get to this video; very powerful, hopefully it will get the message across to at least one driver, if not more. Keep your eyes on the road ahead ... far enough ahead so you can see what's in the distance and be able to slow down if/when necessary.
