Wing? Check. WR Blue? Yep. Gold wheels? Aw, yeah. Ladies and gentlemen, meet the 2015 Subaru WRX STI, which has leaked out ahead of its Detroit Auto Show debut, courtesy of Mexican website Terra Autos.

We don't have any firm details to go on, but as we reported earlier, the STI is expected to use a turbocharged, 2.5-liter boxer four producing something like 300 to 305 horsepower and 290 pound-feet of torque. (Note: The standard WRX uses a new, Forester-derived 2.0-liter engine.) Expect the usual host of STI fitments, including a more performance-oriented suspension tune and upgraded brakes, but don't expect a five-door variant – like the WRX, the STI will be a sedan-only affair.

Check out the leaked shots of the new STI in the gallery above, and stay tuned for all of the official details next week.

The looks of the car are an acquired taste.  I also thought the last gen STI looked a bit plain when it was first shown, but as time went by I gradually grew to like it (but only in hatchback form).  It could have also been the same for this STI, but without a hatchback option, my interest in it has flatlined. Which brings me to my second point... no hatch, no sale.  I'm not a militant hatchback fanatic, so I'm willing to accept sedans and coupes if the vehicle is what I really want and comes in no other body shape.  For example, if I could get an M3 or an M4, and afford to pay for its maintenance, then I wouldn't care about a hatchback/wagon option. But, for me at least, the WRX and the STI have always been about combining practicality with AWD performance, which means that the only body style that I have eyes for is the hatchback.  By removing the hatchback option, they're basically turning their backs on a not-insignificant portion of the demographic which buys the WRX and the STI.  Up here in Canada, particularly around Toronto/Woodbridge/Vaughn/Brampton/Mississauga and such, the predominant body style for the WRXs and the STIs is the hatchback. Last but not least... if the STI really still has the old 2.5L EJ257, then the possibility of Subaru seeing a dime of my money is absolutely nil.  I know that this article only shows a photo of the STI and as such is only fit for discussing the looks of the car, but I'm still surprised that there are literally only two people in this comment section that even said anything about the ringland problems that the STIs seem to be experiencing.  This isn't an easy fix like the HPFP on my gen 2 MS3 (had to be replaced for Stage 1 and above, otherwise engine goes boom), we're talking cracked pistons and/or ringlands here, and I'm pretty sure that an engine rebuild using forged pistons is in the thousands of dollars.  Also, has anybody seen the stock dyno map for a 2012 STI?  Cobb did one, and found something like 14.something AFR at WOT, which is a recipe for disaster.

I completely agree about the 2.5 (well, everything, actually, we have the same arguments). My friends '08 STi blew cylinder #1, (not the ringlands, but still an awful engine) because the ECU was not properly connected, and Subaru REFUSED to fix it, he ended up completely re-doing the engine for the same money, but the point is that the engine was ****, and Subaru refused to do anything about it. Another car with the same engine WILL cause problems.

You are correct. Perhaps the stock tune is what is killing the stock ringlands? I had my 2012 ProTuned by Cobb and they confirmed the horrible stock tune as well. We will see if this is a punched out FA engine or a FB 2.5 engine. (No way it is still an EJ257)

"BNH 356" on the plate is really interesting. I don't know what the rules are when snapping photos for media shots but from a marketing standpoint that number 356 should/could mean something. I'm hoping it's the HP rating but I'm not going to hold my breath.

Good observation. That'd be awesome if it did have that # for a HP rating.

seriously what are these people thinking? I test drove an ST and after my Evo it was a complete joke. The wannabe interior was a joke, the clutch pedal was a joke, the power wasn't there. The handling reminded me of my moms Volvo S40. I swear I think Ford paid all these internet cretins off to hype the ST, because that is one boring car.

The problems that I have with the ST are: 1) Torque steer. 2) The turning circle of an F-150. Ford, WTF? 3) Many reports of failing electric power steering systems and multiple replaced steering racks with no solutions.

Not in California, they don't. Took me 4 months of waiting to get my 5-door STi in WRB. Almost settled on a WRX because I absolutely needed the hatch but I couldn't get the color I wanted. The sedan wasn't even on my radar.

I own a 11 wagon and was waiting for a new wagon to upgrade... I have a close friend who was waiting for a new wagon too, but when all this sedan only crap came out we're both looking elsewhere.. It's totally not a diesel thing. It's the functionality of a wagon and me being able to fit a ton of crap plus a dog in the back and go camping... and get there first of coarse.

I didn't specifically say you. Some people do want them, but not enough for Subaru to bring it to market. The STi itself does not sell in large numbers. People don't understand the cost of bring any vehicle to market. If there isn't enough demand for a wagon, there's no point in selling it.

I like the exterior. Am I going to buy one? Nope. Have always hated the interior of these cars. $18K rental car interior on a $40K STI = no thanks.

The new WRX's interior has been greatly improved. I'm sure the interior of the STI is at least as good as the WRX's, if not better.
