"Are you telling me that you built a time machine... out of a DeLorean?" So asked one Marty McFly of his mentor Dr. Emmett Brown, who replied: "The way I see it, if you're gonna build a time machine into a car, why not do it with some style?"

Doc Brown was right, of course: with an exotic mid-engine layout, gullwing doors and stainless steel body, the DeLorean DMC-12 sure looked the part. It just needed a little more juice. Well this one might not have 1.21 gigawatts of time-bending power – that'd be more than one and a half million horsepower – but it does have more than the 150 hp in the the standard 2.8-liter V6.

DeLorean Twin-TurboThat's because this particular DeLorean has had its stock Peugeot Renault Volvo engine swapped out for a Buick-sourced, all-aluminum, 4.3-liter V6 from the Grand National. Dutteiller Performance didn't leave the engine in stock form, either: while they were swapping it out, they added a pair of turbochargers, new pistons, crank, cams and much, much more.

The result is an engine dyno'd at a massive 708 horsepower and tuned to deliver 570 hp. Dubbed the World's Fastest DeLorean, it was featured on Drive TV in an episode of Tuned you can view below along with another slideshow of the engine build. And best of all, it can be yours: it's for sale on eBay Motors with less than 37,000 miles on the odometer, with bids currently standing at $13,300 as we go to press.

Love everything about it, just could use some new wheels. Disappointed that the videos weren't of this particular car tearing up some pavement.

John DeLorean should've put a Buick tubo V6 in it from the get go. He might have sold more DMC-12s.

Agree! This thing just needs some BBS wheels and it's good-to-go.

      Buick's turbo V6 was a 3.8, the 4.3 was in the Cyclone/Typhoon

I can't believe that I used to think that this car actually looked good in 1985. Wow... cars must have really sucked back then for this one to be considered attractive.

"World's Fastest DeLorean" wasn't that tall a mountain to conquer.

Actually, it may well have passed CA smog just fine. I know of several well-built hi-po cars that have passed smog just fine. By selecting CARB-approved parts and running cats, they do in fact pass. CA smog isn't quite a draconian as you'd think for those who know how to work the system.

Despite the CA plate, there is NO way you could reg this thing in the Peoples Republik of Kalifornia. Best case is that it got smogged right before the build and you have whatever time is left on that smog cert to enjoy this beast before it has to move out of state.

Checking in from the Detroit area, where you can register a car leaking fluids, pouring out smoke with iffy brakes and electrical issues that affect its signal lights and other safety features. I have a question regarding the smog regulations out there. Are they really that strict? I always see people say the same thing you did about custom builds like these. What are these cars missing to make them pass? Or is it not possible at all?
