Mention the name Mitsubishi to different people and you'll likely get two startling different images. Environmentalists will focus on the company's strides in developing EVs, while performance enthusiasts will point you toward the Lancer Evolution. The prevailing wisdom was that Mitsubishi would cancel the latter to concentrate on the former, but the latest intel suggests that the two will be reconciled with a new Evo around the corner.

Although Mitsubishi is reportedly working to streamline its lineup from 23 models on 12 different platforms to 13 models on 7 by 2016, the next Evo will stand as an exception. Like Subaru did with the formerly Impreza-based WRX (or for that matter Nissan with the formerly Skyline-based GT-R), the new Evo won't have anything to do with the next Lancer, which itself will be based on a Renault-Nissan platform.

On that unique platform, Mitsubishi is likely to install a small direct-injection turbo engine (potentially a diesel) that could be based on the 1.1-liter, three-cylinder turbo engine in the XR-PHEV concept we saw in Tokyo, supplemented by small electric motors with lightweight batteries and driving all four wheels through an enhanced version of the company's Super All-Wheel Control system. As to whether the Evo name will carry over, that remains to be seen, but if these reports prove accurate, its spirit could very much live on.

      Hmmm. This ought to be interesting. My evo was awesome when I had it. If they price it right and power it right, they will sell. 1g stock on turns. The torque vectoring was unmatched. Edmunds did an awesome test with the MR. Lets see where this goes.

      Sounds more to me like they are planning on launching a new PHEV dedicated platform that they might use the EVO name as a beard. Building a new platform for a line of PHEV cars is definitely the right way to do it, instead of trying to retrofit everything back into a gas model. It sounds like they are just using the EVO name to launch their new platform. If it successful, I wouldn't be surprised if this platform becomes the basis for a number of new PHEV cars. This being a whole new start of a PHEV/EV platform that could grow into more models makes a whole lot more sense than building a dedicated platform just for the EVO. Reusing the EVO name is probably just branding to help them launch it.

          Evos comprise a small percentage of Mitsu's sales. It has nothing to do with their revitalization plan, other than being a posterboy for new car technology. Their success hinges on the Mirage, Outlander, Montero, Lancer, and Galant. Selling those models will allow them to build a new Evo, not the other way around.

          ^^ Oh you mean List? Thats because some dealers have residual 2012 models. Mitsubishi has confirmed a new midsize sedan in its new deal with Nissan/ Renault-Samsung, along with a new Lancer.

      This sounds stupid to me. This would remove all the tuning potential these cars have. Stick to the orginial formula, give us a 2.0-2.5L 4cyl turbo with around 350hp. Also improve the interior quailty by a lot and you'll have a winner!

        I don't think Mitsu really cares how much their cars can be tuned. The percentage of people who modify their cars is very small, even for a performance care like the Evo.

        A lot of that weight and complexity is traded rather than added. Batteries and motors allow for smaller engine and replaces transfer case, drive shaft and rear diff. Also, they make for better weight distribution.

      Sounds cool but expensive, and plugin hybrids kind of miss the mark with people like me who don't have anywhere to plug them in. I really hope they keep the Ralliart trims for those of us who'd like a turbocharged AWD car that doesn't cost $40k.

      Hybrids are everywhere. They're not just slow hippie commuters anymore. It's no doubt that it's the roadmap of the future for all passenger vehicles. The future is already here with a few, but the average fleet will happen more slowly. Hybrids will, on average, slowly evolve from being mostly gas, assisted by electric, to mostly electric assisted by gas.
