Porsche Carrera GT Roof PanelsHumans are odd creatures. Some of us collect things associated with bad events, particularly when it comes to cars. Your author, for example, has the grille of his wrecked 2004 Mini Cooper S hanging on the wall. As a more extreme example, an 18-year-old Californian is in trouble with the LA police, but not for taking an item from his own car accident. Instead, he has been arrested for stealing from the wreck of the Porsche Carrera GT that killed actor Paul Walker and racer Roger Rodas.

And it wasn't a small piece, either. It was the Carrera GT's carbon-fiber roof panel. Making matters worse is word that the theft happened while the tow truck that was hauling the wrecked Porsche was sitting in traffic. According to the LA Sheriff's Department report, "A witness saw a male exit a vehicle that was following the tow truck. The male grabbed a piece of the wrecked Porsche off the tow truck bed." Besides the eyewitnesses, it didn't help that images of the roof panel were later posted on Instagram.

The man, Jameson Witty, was later arrested at his home, where police also found the roof panel. The driver of the car Witty was in when he took the roof panel, meanwhile, is planning on surrendering to the police, according to CNN. It remains unclear if the district attorney's office will charge the two, although if it does, they'll be facing felony grand theft and tampering with evidence.

I have a similar ritual to the author of keeping the spare key to my damaged or fallen cars but this is not sentimental it's disrespectful and illegal the scumbag deserves what comes to him if not more

I would suggest the thief research events that befell the owners of the James Dean 550 Spyder wreck. Chilling and bizarre stuff. Off hand, I recall the person who bought the engine was either killed or paralyzed while using that very engine. There are many other strange events surrounding the wrecked 550 until it disappeared. I guess this guy is already paying for possessing the part for such a short time.

Obviously this guy was planning on selling it as a memorabilia after the dust has settled. They should arrest the guy to the max.

Had the part not been from such a high-profile wreck, nobody would care. In my experience, this kind of thing happens all the time.

somebody from the insurance companies would care about a part that has a list price easily in the tens of thousands.

Debris left behind after the clean-up as a memento is one thing...taking a piece off the tow-truck in another. Douche Bag award for sure.

You think that is bad! This summer in France there was a train reck and the dead people where all over the place. And some kids came and stole stuff from the corpse!!!! At first, they thought there where helping them until they realize that they where stealing them!! WTF! When the law enforcer and medic arrive to push away the kids, the kids started to throw rocks at them! http://www.slate.fr/france/75315/catastrophe-train-bretigny-sur-orge-caillassage-pillage-ou-pas

The DA is blowing this out of proportion. Let's be honest this wreck of a car now belongs to the insurance company, the guy saw a foolish opportunity to make a quick buck, he should be slapped on the wrist accordingly but people are acting like he pissed on paul walker. Lets not forget that company that sold pieces of the fallen golden gate bridge to earn some serious cash. It happens everyday people grow up.

I am sure this accident will be solved now that they have this crucial piece of evidence back.

this car part is worth more than a entire honda civic. do you think the insurance company would care if you stole a honda?
