ChargePoint's electric vehicle charging network recently added its 50,000th user and, unsurprisingly, the ChargePoint member lives in the San Francisco Bay area. Not long ago, that community took the top spot on ChargePoint's list of the "Top 10 EV-friendly Metropolitan Markets."

The 50,000th driver plugged in a Tesla Model S at a ChargePoint station at the County of Marin Civic Center in San Rafael, CA. This quiet but still somewhat momentous event took place less than an hour after he or she joined the ChargePoint network. Overall, ChargePoint says it now has over 14,000 charging stations in place and that its members have driven over 60 million miles gasoline free. That comes out to over 2.6 million gallons of gasoline and over 20 million pounds of CO2 emissions saved.

Beyond being an accomplishment for the company, Dimitrios Papadogonas, vice president of marketing, said that 50,000 users speaks to how rapidly EV adoption is occurring across the country. The company's press release (see below) cites October sales data from Electric Drive Transportation Association to prove its point – 10,060 plug-in electric vehicles were sold it the US during October – 24 percent over September and 43 percent over October 2012.

In the press release, ChargePoint refers to itself as the "world's largest and most open electric vehicle charging network." That might not go over too well with Brett Hauser, a founding member of the Open Charge Alliance and president of Greenlots, an open-standards-based technology solutions provider for EV networks. In an article in Greentechmedia, Hauser says that proprietary network management systems and vendors like Ecotality, ChargePoint and Better Place have created an issue of "vendor lock-in." He thinks that Europe is better at adopting open standards and points to the Ecotality and Better Place bankruptcies as evidence that proprietary systems face a whole host of problems.

Her said: "The fact that ChargePoint now has 50,000 users and is moving towards Open Charge Point Protocol (OCPP) compliance is great news for the entire industry. ChargePoint members have now driven 64 million gas free miles

CAMPBELL, CALIF – This week, the world's largest and most open electric vehicle charging network hit a historical landmark – 50,000 drivers on the growing ChargePoint network.

It should come as no surprise that the 50,000th ChargePoint member resides in the San Francisco Bay Area. Just two weeks ago, the Bay Area landed in the top spot on ChargePoint's list of the "Top 10 EV-friendly Metropolitan Areas."

Through the easy signup process, the 50,000th ChargePoint user joined Tuesday evening, and less than one hour later, plugged-in a Tesla Model S to a ChargePoint station at the County of Marin Civic Center in San Rafael.

With over 14,000 EV charging spots, ChargePoint members have now driven over 64 million miles free of gasoline. This equates to saving over 2.6 million gallons of gas and over 20 million lbs. of CO2 emissions.

"This is quite an accomplishment for ChargePoint, but more importantly, it is a testament to how rapidly EV adoption is happening across the nation," said Dimitrios Papadogonas, ChargePoint's Vice President of Marketing. "We are seeing extraordinary growth within the EV market, and ChargePoint is proud to help lead the way."

According to the Electric Drive Transportation Association 10,060 plug-in vehicles were sold in the United States in October, representing a 24 percent increase over the previous month and 43 percent increase over October of 2012. There have now been 148,854 plug-in vehicles sold nationwide.

      We've used these points occasionally, but they are often rather expensive. Our most recent charge of our Chevy Volt correlated to a higher price than if we'd driven home on Gasoline. We did it anyway simply because I like not using gas, but... seriously, the prices need to at least correlate to not costing MORE than gas driving. Equal I could stand. More? Not really. I think they only reason they get away with it is people don't like doing math, and just assume it's less expensive because it's electricity.

        Right now... it is expected that you do 80%+ of your charging at home, and maybe even at off-peak rates. So they feel they can charge you 5 - 8 times more for electricity since you would still be saving a lot of money. These are 'convenience chargers'. When Charging infrastructure starts to get very large, and folks start buying EVs/PHEVs without any charging at home (on-street parking)... then rates would need to drop to levels that would still save money over gasoline. But that is a few years from now.

      they must have used the app to be able to use it only one hour after signing up. They would otherwise have to wait for their card. It's RFID so you can't print a temp card. Congrats to them for having such a quick experience.

      How can charge point call itself open when you have to purchase an NFC tag. If you want to see a truly open network, take a look at Sun Country Highway in Canada. Those guys got it goin on! www.suncountryhighway.ca

        They can call themselves open since other company's RFID tags can work with ChargePoint stations too. You are going to need something to identify with the charger... since selling electricity to unregistered customers is still a legal challenge.

      Re the comment about no proprietary system can work. That's because Blink had bad hardware and bad service and I'm sure their plan had holes in it or expected to much pay back to quickly. That said, CP is working on an "all access card" with another Co. so that we can use whatever EVSE with our same card. Just the billing would be the same. Haven't heard of a rollout timeframe.

        An ALL ACCESS CARD sounds wonderful. One card to use at all charging stations. Maybe even make it work at gas stations. And retail. And online. It could be called... oh I don't know... VISA? Mastercard?
