If you're sweet on the new BMW i3 but wish it had more space to carry people and stuff, we've got good news for you. According to Autocar, BMW is planning on stretching the platform that underpins the i3 to create a new model, expected to be called i5.

The stretch job would add an extra four inches of legroom in the back and another six inches of rear overhang to the benefit of cargo space. The result would create a vehicle longer than the current Mini Countryman - although the next Countryman is likely to be even larger. As Autocar points out, the process of extending the i3's composte passenger cell likely wouldn't be as difficult or cost-intensive as lengthening a conventional metal chassis, although the rear doors would need to be re-engineered.

Whether the resulting vehicle would more closely resemble a hatchback, wagon, minivan or something in between remains to be seen, however BMW is said to have already registered the nameplates i1 through i8, signalling that the possibility is at least there to add more members to its new EV family.

I drove this car earlier today, completely change my view on electric cars. This thing is Subaru STi fast and looks even better in person. Don't knock it, until you try it.

BMW is planning a whole i-car lineup. they already reserved the rights for the names from i1 to i9 and as they already invested into carbon fiber bodys, electric motor manufacturing this is very plausible. As tesla will launch the model e or model c, bmw will answer with an i5. this is really becomming an interesting competition. as several suppliers predict that it will be hard to sell a pure ICE car in the near future. As I talked with a Toyota sales man, more and more ppl demand hybrids. They come into the dealership and want a gas-car or a diesel, and "walk" away with the order of a hybrid. the demand is so high that there are several months to wait for your hybrid. finally bmw is serious. finally another big player enering the game. this will be beneficial as techology will mature and prices will come down. I have read that the i5 will have a 125 kW electric motor and a 3-cylinder range extender with 66 kW. check out some design studies: http://www.autobild.de/artikel/bmw-projekt-i-vorschau-2821413.html I think it looks great, and to be honest, for me this is the first interesting BMW lineup.

"the demand is so high that there are several months to wait for your hybrid." My local Toyota dealer has dozens of Prius and Camry Hybrids. Either you're talking out of your ass or you're taking the word of a Toyota salesman who is talking out if his ass.

there is no need to swear. here in crazy germany there is a very high demand for hybrids, although vw sales reps are talking ppl out of it. the battery will fail the el. motor is faulty, and so on. I have asked for a loaner to try several models, yet I was not lucky. expecially the prius c (here yaris hybrid) is sellign very well

I think an i1 and i5 would make sense in addition to the i3 since so many people like the other cars in the compact CUV category. So long as they don't expect each model to have huge sales in the beginning and screw things up that way. I can see why some couldn't't buy the i3 due to it being a bit too big and/or small. I wonder why it is easier to extend the cfrp chassis. I wouldn't say it's ridiculous, I assumed that would be true but I don't know the basis for saying so. Can we get an explanation?

$43,000 starting... for what? This supped up smartcar? Nope, could buy most of the vehicles on the market with that, and almost every car used. Why waste it on something this dumb looking and small with no redeeming qualities? Sad to see all the lemmings line up for a disappointment. Hey, even look at BMW's reliability as of late for a good guess as to how bad this will fail.

Hi Stephen If you want to bring lemmings into the argument I think any regular gas car would have been a better example. No matter how you look at it $43 000 is cheap for a carbon fibre bodied electric car. Whether or not it was a good idea will be more obvious a decade from now.

What is the logic that making a new carbon fibre chassis design would be easier than making a metal design somehow? Ridiculous. As to the car, I'm sure if the i3 is a success BMW will make an i5 of some sort. I'd work on making the current car not feel so cheap before moving to the i5 personally.

        1. way lighter 2. I never read anything anywhere that it feels cheap.

BMW is getting awfully excited about the i line. They must think they have a Tesla on their hands. Looks like a suppository to me.

Smart move. The "i" brand can lead to several products of varying sizes and prices, for the day when ICE motors and large luxo barges get out of fashion (let's face it, a 7-series almost exclusively appeals to senior citizens already).

Looks like the b pillars are going to make a come back. I know BMW isn't planning a CUV, but that would make more sense than just adding a few inches of extra space.
