With the SLS AMG going away, Mercedes could be looking to the virtual world for a supercar replacement. The Mercedes AMG Vision Gran Turismo was designed specifically for the Gran Turismo 6 video game, which will go on sale next month, and the automaker has released a teaser picture of the car on its Facebook page.

More information about this car will be released tomorrow morning, but we can't help but wonder if there might be any production design implications – as is usually the case with Mercedes' Vision concepts. Although we can't see much of the AMG Vision Gran Turismo in this picture, it is obvious the design will be futuristic and far-fetched.

If you think this is a dumb idea, this is not the first time this has been done. The Citroen GT started as a virtual supercar in a joint collaboration between Polyphony Digital and Citroen, solely for the Gran Turismo game, and then later became a real life car. That car was engineered and designed entirely by digital simulation, mirroring real life factors in the most precise way possible. That means theoretically even though the entire car was developed digitally, it could technically work in real life to its EXACT specs. There was nothing fake or exaggerated about it. When they built the real life model, the only major difference is that instead of using hydrogen fuel cells to power each wheel - a system that is buildable in real life - they used a Ford V8 engine instead... probably for cost/practically reasons. http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/10/08cit-gt_parispr_08_.jpg http://photos.evo.co.uk/images/front_picture_library_UK/dir_595/car_photo_297651_25.jpg Doesn't seem so ridiculous now, does it.

This is how advertising works nowadays. No need to open up a newspaper or magazine to see the latest stuff out there, grandpa.

I don't think he was referring to advertising but rather just the general idea being a bit ludicrous.

To the Author: The Mercedes AMG does not currently have a name as far as I can tell. "Vision Gran Turismo" is the name for Polyphony Digital's project that involves a number of car companies and design houses. http://www.gran-turismo.com/us/news/00_3377315.html
