The big news in the world of Lexus might be its polarizing new IS, but that hasn't stopped exhibitors at the SEMA show from experimenting with all three generations of the Japanese 3 Series fighter.

Let's talk about this third-generation IS, because it's, um, different. Designed by Rob Evans, it's a contest winner from DeviantArt (click the link to see several of the other entries put together by the DeviantArt community). We'll admit, it's pretty wild looking. Try to imagine it covered in sponsorship liveries and racing in the Japanese Super GT series, and its polarizing looks become a bit easier on the eye. In the flesh, it's a sharper car than the renderings we showed you earlier this week.


Next up, we have Andrew Atigehchi's 2007 IS250, a menacing, vinyl-wrapped sedan. The intake has been replaced by an F-Sport unit, while the exhaust is from Aimgain. Mazzuri headers round out the breathing mods, while F-Sport brakes are there to bring things to a stop. Megan coilovers and F-Sport sway bars and 20-inch Nitto Invo tires keep things shiny side up.

Finally, we have what could well be a future classic, the first-generation IS. This 2004 IS300 from Maricar Cortez looks about as clean and simple as cars at SEMA come. Under hood, its 2JZ-GE six-cylinder engine has been fitted with a ProLex supercharger, while a custom dual-exhaust system adds a bit more aural character.

Fan-Created 2014 Lexus IS 350 to Debut at 2013 Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show
- Lexus DeviantART Challenge Winner's Build on Display at SEMA, Nov. 5-8

TORRANCE , Calif., (Oct. 31, 2013) – The all-new 2014 Lexus IS sport sedan already has a reputation for turning heads and will continue to surprise audiences at the November Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show in Las Vegas, thanks to Lexus' partnership with deviantART. Lexus enlisted deviantART, the largest online social network for artists, in a search for creatives to help boost the IS' already aggressive exterior styling with even edgier designs. The winning design will make its debut as a multi-dimensional build in the Lexus booth at the 2013 SEMA Show.

DeviantArt and Lexus challenged the design community to show their vision for the 2014 IS with custom exterior treatments and modifications. The winning build brings winner, Robert Evans' design to life and features a one-of-a-kind aero styling package, a carbon interior package, special three-piece wheels and a custom paint job. VIP Auto Salon saw Evans' rendering into reality with 10 weeks of work on the 2014 IS to create the winning customization.

DeviantART community members spent countless hours conceiving concepts and creating visions that would further enhance the IS. Four judges narrowed more than 600 submissions down to 25 semi-finalists. The winner was selected based on alignment with the essence of the 2014 IS design, consistency with the image of the Lexus brand, originality and potential as an actual executable design. Lexus will hold a press conference at its space in Central Hall, #21601, at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, Nov. 5 to unveil and discuss the build, and other SEMA displays, in detail.

In addition to having his creation come to life, Evans, the talented first place winner, received a one-year lease of a 2014 Lexus IS F SPORT; $2,000; a trip to this year's SEMA Show to see his IS concept on display; 8,000 deviantART points; and a one-year premium membership to deviantART.

In addition to the deviantART contest winner, seven other Lexus IS builds, plus a one-of-a-kind LFA, will be on display at SEMA:

      There were so many other designs that deserved to win instead of that heap of junk. I wasted my time entering something classy and elegant as did many other members of DeviantArt. The objective was to make the IS the center of attention at SEMA and there is no doubt they achieved that. Just not in a good way!

        I agree with your first sentence. The winning design is garishly hideous, even for a SEMA car. Even people who have no clue about auto design can look at that and say it looks hideous. But the guy who designed it, Jon Sibal, has ties with major auto publications as it seems like he makes his living by photoshopping potential future cars under speculation... basically guesswork of what the next gen [fill in the blank] will look like, and I'm sure he's commissioned by MotorTrend or C&D to make those images. But if you look at his body of work, he's not really a designer. He just does tack-on Photoshop manipulation jobs to existing cars, ie. copy/paste, warp, stamp tool, levels, color balance, etc. But since he's a well-known name within the auto industry, I wouldn't be surprised if there was some type of unfair bias in his favor as far as judging goes. How else can you explain how that wacky concoction of a car won 1st place?? It looks awful. The girl who placed 2nd should've won 1st place IMO. I think that girl and myself were the only ones who actually did our own renders from scratch, meaning we sketched out our own linework and applied our own color/value and basically designed everything ourselves without using any existing photos. That shows more skill and talent than some lame tack-on photo-manip job. I'm with you Justin, after seeing the 1st place winner I feel like I wasted my time on this contest.

          @JonSibal, my mistake, I remember seeing your name associated with that design somewhere... so after the months passed I guess I mistakenly ingrained it in my head that you were the designer. My apologies. @2MUCH - Rob, is that you? If not, what are you saying, that you actually LIKE the 1st place design? If I was jealous I'd be saying something like "I should've won the contest or placed top 3". But I didn't say that now did I. I said the girl who won 2nd place should've won it as she clearly put a lot of time and effort into her design and presentation and most of all, it looked good. And YES, I stand firmly behind my belief that anyone who enters a design contest with their OWN ORIGINAL artwork shows a lot more merit than someone who simply manipulated an already existing photo. As for the "hater" comment... well, yes actually I DO hate the 1st place design :) And as far as POS goes, it takes one to know one ;)
