If you were enamored of the GT concept that Kia unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show two years ago, we've got good news for you. According to the latest reports, Kia is planning on putting it into production.

The big question at this point is how closely the production model will shadow the four-door coupe concept. The svelte shape will undoubtedly have to make some concessions toward roadworthiness and production feasibility, but just what platform Kia will use to underpin it remains unknown. It could base it off the large, rear-drive K9 or borrow the platform from sister-company Hyundai's Genesis Coupe. Either of those options would enable the production Kia GT to keep the concept's rear-drive orientation, but other routes would make it either front-drive or potentially all-wheel drive.

Word has it also that Kia is planning to reveal a small roadster concept in the mold of the Mazda MX-5 at the upcoming Detroit Auto Show in January. If public feedback is positive enough, that could see production before the end of next year as well.

i was fortunate to see this in person at that show. As good as this car looks here, the pictures do not do any justice for this car. I cannot wait to see what they come up with in January.

I would completely shocked if that's even close to a production version! Good looking car as it sits. I wonder if a manual AWD version is possible?

Honda, Toyota, this is what happen if you hire a former Audi designer name Peter Schreyer to be the head of Kia. Kia cars start to look like affordable Audis. Honda, especially you , a European designer should be in charge of your styling department. Just look at your lineup, Honda you have the ugliest design cars and truck in the automotive industry.

This thing looks fantastic. The Europeans should be worried. The Koreans seem to understand the importance of style better than the Japanese.

Looking forward to seeing the GT in production form. The concept is quite a stunning car, especially in person. Perhaps this could be based on RK, the shortened, compact RWD sedan sitting below Genesis. If we could see the production form of the roadster before the end of next year, that means they are already done developing the production version. So what we will get in Detroit is more like a preview of the production coming next year. Let's see what they have in store!

...If you'd read the actual post, you'd know this is from 2011. The hatred people seem to have of Hyundai/Kia is borderline mind-blowing. Though it may be sympathy for the perennial underdog, I root hard for these companies because they've got potential and a lot of resources to draw on. It's the obstinate attitude that people like you have toward them that I tend to think makes them a more-conservative, less-interesting company than they could be. What's the point of even attempting to build something special like an 8000rpm, V10 mid-engine sportscar if everyone's just going to **** on it no matter how good it is?

Looks like another convoluted car made by commity where no one talked to the other and you wind up with a mess like this.

Anyone looking at the car? I'm not... I wish other Automakers would not release photos so early so that KIA might actually have to design something themselves without copying everyone else. Same goes for Mazda. FFS you guys design something without a blatant copy. You are supposedly good enough now?

Beautiful car...shame the final production version will never look at thing like this. This car deserves a manual transmission option too; Kia and Hyundai don't want you to have that option anymore.

When the take rate is less than 3%, does it make sense financially to produce such a small volume of such vehicles? Manual transmission Maxima, Honda Accord V6, Taurus SHO, Porsche GT3? It's a dying breed. You act like this is a Hyundai and/or Kia issue and it's industry wide. Shut up aready...

TruthHertz... appropriate name in this instance. However, I believe it's not that simple in this case. If you have sporting intentions and don't have the historic pedigree, then there will be some need to build what the driving enthusiast wants, even if they are the minority. Without the endorsement of the driving enthusiast, a new car company will never be able to project themselves as building sports cars. So the opposite is true when you get into more established builders - BMW, Porsche, Ferrari all have strong racing heritage, so when they ditch the manual driving enthusiasts know there's more reason than trying to sell to the mass market.
