In some European countries – Iceland and Norway – the Tesla Model S is doing quite well. In others, according to the International Business Times, early indications are that interest in the world's best-selling luxury EV are a bit muted.

The numbers from IBT indicate that Tesla's sales in Norway hit 801 in the first two months of availability. In Holland, Denmark and Germany it was just 531 - for all three. There were 348 sold in Holland and 85 in Denmark those first two months.

That leaves 98 sold in Germany in those two months, quite a ways behind the country's best-selling EVs. The Smart ED sold 146 units in Germany just in September, and even the Renault Zoe and the Nissan Leaf outsold the Model S that month. Those two EVs sold 57 and 55 units, respectively.

All this is despite the fact that Germany's market is much bigger than Norway's (IBT says it's bigger than all three of the other countries, combined). We're pretty sure the high interest in Norway is due to that country's big governmental support for EVs and the low sales outside of Norway could be due to the sluggish European automarket overall. We're not sure why, but it's still something to pay attention to when Tesla releases its third-quarter quarterly earnings report in two weeks, on November 5.

      Euros just will not buy them because the false impression they have of American cars. To bad for them they are missing out on the best EV on the planet, fast stylish, real room and fantastic range.

        Lease companies overhere in The Netherlands beg to differ. The S is about to become a tremendous success as a lease- or company car. $8.50 a Gallon Petrol helps too... So, the "American-ess" of the S is not a problem. But, it could be in Germany. Especially given the fact that the Big Three have actively lobbied Merkel to ease environmental laws to let them sell their "older tech". And Germans are pretty convinced of the superiority of "Their own" :P

      Elon is in Germany this week. He was in Munich and said a bunch of new stuff. 1. Announcement coming this Thursday about location of first 6 Superchargers in Germany which are breaking ground very soon. 2. 50% of German population will be in range of SC by end of Q1 2014, 100% by end of 2014. 3. Greater SC count per capita than USA, will offer 135kW supercharge. 135kW coming to USA SCs later. 4. Complimentary high speed tuning package for Germany, will retrofit to existing cars for no charge.

        TSLA is a volatile stock. There will always be big variations. For Tesla stock this is a minor hiccup and an opportunity to buy in.

        But all of the reviews for the Model S have been very positive in the german magazines. They admit that the infotainment and tech package makes germany's best look dated, but moan about the lack of driver assist tech.

      This is 167 cars/week over 2 months. How many is is the Holland assembly line capable at this time? And how many are the suppliers capable at this time? What is the backlog? If IBT wanted a true report, they would ask those questions. I for one would like to know.

      Or the difference in sales could be because Tesla announced in the Spring that they would target Norway first for sales. Factors like the incentives, and that Norway's entire supercharger network could be built out with just a couple of stations drove the decision to prioritize their Norway roll-out ahead of other European nations. When a company says they are going to target one nation in a new market first for sales, and that nation ends up being the nation with the most sales, I don't know what there is to talk about. It is nothing more than the plan that was announced months ago, going according to plan.

        The other reason Norway was targeted for the first Tesla's, is that Norway is not a member of the European Union. All Model S for EU nations will be offloaded in port in Netherlands. The EU cars need some further assembly at Tilburg in order to avoid EU taxes. Cars for Norway (non-EU) are completely assembled already in US and will be not go to Tilburg but directly transfer in port to another ship destined for Drammen. That is one less step == more deliveries in Norway.

      The S is a big car, made for big Americans. It may not be well suited to roads in many European cities that can often be narrow with very small spots to park. I've never been to Germany, but if t's anything like Rome, it would be very difficult to own such a large car there.

      The relatively high number of sales in Holland are because of tax incentives. In order to qualify for the maximum tax break the car has to be registered before Dec 31st. Tesla appears to be selling as fast as they can assemble them in the European plant in Tilburg. For a 2013 registered company EV or plug in on (operational) lease, 0% of the list price is added to taxable income. Currently, pure EV's like the Model S but also plug-in hybrids like the Mitsubishi Outlander plug-in, Volt / Ampera, Prius Plug-in and Volvo V60 plug-in qualify based on CO2 emissions. For a 2014 registered EV the tax rate goes up to 4%.

      Obviously the witer has no clue about the European Automotive market... An further more: Do you know how expensive this vehicle is? This is just a status symbol. Without huge governmental incentives, this car is simply not affordable. And as soon as the i8 is available the Tesla sales will become negligible if compared with BMW.

          The joke is the abismal vehicle with 2,1 tons - that is the model S! At a motorway speed of just 120 km/h the range goes down to 350 km! The i3 with range extender - and all the more the very frugal sporty i8 - do not have to search for chargers every 3 hours. And the consumption per km is lower for the i3 and for the i8, compared to the bulky model S!

        @ Stephan Pius Stephan I think you have misunderstood the nature of the Tesla model S. The Model S is a large( ish) saloon, (it may perform like a sports car, but it's a saloon) It's not competing against small compact commuter cars, or sports cars. Nor does Tesla needs mass volume sales to be profitable. Not is it a Rolls-Royce, Bentley or Mercedes S class limousine. The Tesla Model S, has an eager number of German buyers, far beyond Tesla's capacity to produce. The superchargers will prove an added bonus. Tesla will sell primarily in German regions without extensive mountains, or local factory loyalties. Sales of 5000 Tesla's per year in Germany would be a very conservative estimate.

          So you'd call it "very conservative" if Tesla would sell 3 times more than Lexus is currently selling in Germany? More than Jaguar or Alfa Romeo? I wish them all the best, but to compete with a Porsche Panamera, a Mercedes CLS or a BMW 5GT is not easy. Ask the Lexus guys.

        Yes, I agree with Stephan. The writer obviously has no idea about the German car market. And Tesla - like other American cars - is an American car with an American setup (especially suspension, response to braking, steering etc.), developed mainly on and for US roads and traffic. I don't doubt the i8 will reach much higher numbers than the Model S, even when it was 50% more expensive. And I also don't doubt that Tesla's destiny doesn't depend on the sales on the German market.
