For 2015, the critically-acclaimed Chevrolet Impala sedan will come in an all-new version: Bi-Fuel. Unveiled yesterday in Washington D.C. by General Motors CEO Dan Akerson, the car will run on both gasoline and compressed natural gas (CNG). Natural gas is cheap and fairly easy to find in the U.S. The average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline is around $3.36 right now, according to AAA. The average price for a "gallon" of CNG is around just $2.10, according to CNGPrices.com.

Despite an abundance of CNG filling stations, however, it's still not quite as easy to find as regular gasoline. Chevrolet designed the Impala Bi-Fuel to burn both fuels to ensure the driver is never far from a place where they can fill up. Chevrolet said the sedan will have a 500-mile driving range.

The Impala joins the Honda Civic in having the rare distinction of being a CNG sedan produced directly by a manufacturer.

GM did not reveal the price of the Impala Bi-Fuel, which is slated to go on sale next summer. The current Impala starts at $26,860.

-CEO repeats call for consumer-driven national energy policy

WASHINGTON, D.C. – General Motors will build a Chevrolet Impala sedan for retail and fleet customers that operates on either gasoline or compressed natural gas (CNG), GM Chairman and CEO Dan Akerson announced today.

It is the only manufacturer-produced full-size bi-fuel sedan and expected to go on sale next summer as a 2015 model. Akerson announced the car during remarks at an energy summit marking the 40th anniversary of the OPEC Oil Embargo.

"OPEC Oil Embargo + 40: A National Summit on Energy Security," was sponsored by the nonpartisan group Securing America's Future Energy, or SAFE. Prominent political, business and military leaders assessed the current state of America's oil dependence since the 1973 oil embargo

Akerson said the bi-fuel Impala is an example of using affordable technology to reduce oil consumption and save consumers money at the pump.

"We know that U.S. energy security won't come from a one-off moonshot," Akerson said. "It will flow from our systematic investment in technology and innovation... our drive to get more from existing energy sources and renewables... our commitment to conservation... and it will be assured by fully and safely exploiting our shale gas reserves."

Natural gas is a cleaner-burning transportation fuel compared to petroleum products, and costs significantly less than gasoline at current prices. CNG vehicles typically have 20 percent fewer greenhouse gas emissions than gasoline-powered cars, according to the California Air Resources Board.

The Chevrolet Impala bi-fuel sedan addresses the range anxiety issue associated with vehicles that run only on natural gas, Akerson said. It features a factory-engineered and fully warranted powertrain that switches seamlessly from CNG to gasoline. Total range is expected to be up to 500 miles.

Akerson said that in addition to advanced technologies and alternative fuels, achieving energy security will require productive partnerships between energy companies, utilities, environmental groups, labor unions, universities and manufacturers.

GM, he said, is working closely with 14 of the country's largest unions and environmental groups through the Blue-Green Alliance, and has relationships with regulators that are "more constructive than ever."

Akerson also reiterated a call he made earlier this year for the Administration and Congress to create a new, consumer-driven national energy policy from a position of strength and abundance.

For its part, GM is committed to saving 12 billion gallons of gasoline in its 2011 to 2017 model year vehicles – offsetting nearly a year of crude imports from the Persian Gulf – with technologies that include lighter materials to reduce vehicle mass, alternative fuels, clean diesel and electrification.

In addition to the Chevrolet Volt, Chevrolet Spark EV and the upcoming Cadillac ELR, GM is introducing start-stop technology standard on the 2014 Chevrolet Malibu helping the midsize sedan achieve 25 mpg city/36 mpg highway, and using electrification to boost fuel economy in the Buick Regal and LaCrosse sedans, which both get EPA-estimated 36 mpg hwy.

      More Crap from Government Motors ... Duh ... Its a bomb on 4 wheels ! Who wants to drive around with a 1500 psi canister of gas in the back of the vehicle ? Bad enough the Volt had "thermal events" now GM wants to have Presurized Bombs going off ? Buy one if you desire ... just keep it away from me !

      My forklift I used for a while when I still worked had a Chevy four cylinder engine than ran on propane. A local business that sells propane has all their delivery trucks running on propane. It's a common thing so why aren't all cars made this way? I bet someone is paying to make it not happen because they are making a fortune the way things are now.

Each Bibendum event is a who’s who of the world’s automotive manufacturers who put their latest vehicles/technology out for the event. One that really caught our attention was the Volvo Multi-Fuel prototype, which is optimised for running on five different fuel types; hythane (10% hydrogen and 90% methane), biomethane, natural gas, bioethanol E85 and Gasoline. The idea, according to Volvo, is to make use of the fuels that are produced locally. This means that less fuel needs to be transported between continents, and you can fill up the car on the fuel that is available wherever you are.

        WHY haven't YOU figured out that this could be a high volume fleet sedan that doesn't have to necessarily wait for thousands of CNG stations to be built. Volvo doesn't build their little hybrid for the U.S.......btw.

          It probably doesn't meet U.S. safety in some requirements. That's the thing, many models built overseas have to meet criteria standards different than U.S. standards. Not saying they are less safe, just saying the U.S. imposes things on manufacturers that need to be added before they can be imported. Volvo my not want to redesign the vehicle where it needs to be to meet our Federal Government standards, primarily the fuel tank and related fuel systems.............

      I have been driving for 45 years, and I don't think that many if any gas stations carry natural gas for cars. I may be wrong, but I don't think so. I would hope that GM will have stations set up all over the country for these cars.

      There is no way in hell I am buying or driveing a vehicle that runs on CNG. This is entirely to dangerous. 1 fender bender and thet compressed gas is a ticking explosion, and forget about driving through construction areas. I do have 1 question if i have a gas leak do i take it back to chevy or call the gas company?

        Are you serious? You already drive around in a car with 25 gallons of extremely flammable liquid protected by a thin shell of metal. Tons of vehicles already run on CNG including many taxi fleets. Ever take a cab?

      Roush converted (propane) vehicle are available in E-Series vans and F-Series pickup trucks. Bluebird school buses are also offered on straight LPG service. Freightliner is releasing the M2 medium duty trucks (up to 33,000 GVWR) powered by spark-ignited LPG engine as an option at the first of the year. The engines in the M2 are derivitives of the Gen VI GM big blocks, somewhere inthe 480 cu. in. range. Properly selected valve material and hard seats in the head prevent valve recession. Correct ignition timing and high dilelectric secondary ignition systems address old problems and have dissipated those issues.

        Its the valve guides valves and compression rings are are made of stronger material but in a regular conversion on non cng vehicles have gone 200,000 plus with no problems.

      I WAS WITH FRITO-LAY FOR ALMOST 25 YEARS. I REMEMBER IN THE 80'S WE WENT TO NATURAL GAS IN OUR FLEET BECAUSE GAS HAD SKYROCKETED. IN ABOUT A YEAR AND A HALF NATURAL GAS WENT HIGHER THAN GASOLINE SO WE RETURNED TO REG. GAS AND STILL THERE TO THIS DAY.

        When Bush left office, gas was $1.80 a gallon. Now we are using up our corn crops and corn is a lot higher now because of the alcohol NOBAMA has pushed on us, the distributors are bilking us like crazy, they get from the government .50 a gallon subsity for using the alcohol in which is supposed to be used to lower our cost but they take it and keep it and dont pass that along to the customer.

          Wher I live E85 is $1.00 cheaper than super it is the only fuel I use in my escalade it runs better it is faster and oil is cleaner it does drop mpg by 20% but still is cheaper for me between my 2 car I use almost no gas.

      The people who said they'd buy a compressed gas car have never seen the results of an exploded compressed air bottle! Just because it doesn't burn doesn't mean it doesn't pollute. Every worked with fiberglass insulation? Todays compressed air bottles are nothing more than woven fiberglass, and minute fragments of that are more polluting than anything from even diesel exhaust of 30 years ago. What people don't know, and what they think they know, is more deadly than what they "scientific experts" tell you. We've become far too dependent on what "experts," who are looking for another grant from our tax money, tell us about everything. When are YOU going to be fed up with being a human guinea pig!

        Why on earth would they put a compressed air bottle on a CNG or Propane powered vehicle? They get their air from the same source as all the other gas powered vehicles. As for these things being in a crash. Gasoline burns too and many vehicles have had their fual tanks rutured in collisions. That is why they are usually mounted between the frame rails. Oh and some of your "scientific experts" are college students who are paying a tuition to have access to the facilities of the college and these studies are the outcome of their work. Just like the various telescopes orbiting the planet. Not all of them are being manned by a NASA employee. Universities rent telescope time which the students use.

        Those tanks are aluminum coated with fiberglass Tanks are good for 15years but can be used a lot longer the only tank rupture reported are from 1973 ups retired truks with a million miles on them.

        No one is going to care about the "minute particles" after an impact, because they will probably be dead from the explosion of the tanks. And when you think about it, even our distant ancestors should have been worrying about the soot and ash they were being exposed to when they had to cook their food over open fires. Of course they could have eaten that food raw, but then there would have been possible food born bacteria that wasn't being killed in the cooking fires.
