A total of ten 500e EVs are being auctioned off as part of a benefit auction for the Motion Picture & Television Fund (MPTF). At the opening gala this past weekend, the first 500e, personalized by Hugh Jackman (pictured), was sold for $50,000 in a "One Night Only" Benefit. The other nine vehicles include EVs that have been customized by Jennifer Lawrence, Clint Eastwood, Anne Hathaway, Ron Howard, Barbra Streisand, Hans Zimmer, Kate Hudson, Will.i.am and Ryan Friedlinghaus. You can find them – and bid – over on eBay during the coming week. Don't get too excited that these are souped up EV speed demons, though. The personalization of each vehicle appears to be limtied to an "etched signature on the FIAT glove box by the participating celebrity." Yawn.
Looking at the bid pages on eBay, like the Hans Zimmer 500e, we see that bidders do need to pre-qualify to bid, but once that step is accomplished, any "legal residents of the 48 contiguous United States are eligible to bid on this particular auction." The trick is that winning bidders will need to pick up their vehicles at Orange Coast FIAT in Costa Mesa, CA. So, maybe it's not that much of a loophole after all.
