The new BMW 4 Series is essentially the coupe version of the latest 3 Series. So it would stand to reason that the four-door version of the 4 Series, in turn, would be the 3 Series – right? Well, yes and no.

Just as BMW offers both a 5 Series sedan and a four-door version of the 6 Series called the Gran Coupe, so, too, will its 4-Series family expand. So following the release of the new 4 Series Convertible, here we have the latest batch of spy shots showing the upcoming 4 Series Gran Coupe - which in turn should not be confused with the hunchbacked 3 Series Gran Turismo, which is more of a sporty wagon than a four-door coupe.

The nearly ready test vehicle pictured here is wearing only minimal camouflage to hide some last few details, but also appears to be wearing the M Sport package that will bridge the gap (at least, visually speaking) between the base models and the M4 Gran Coupe that is all but certain to follow.

Does anybody else find this funny? The 4 series is a coupe based off a 3 series sedan. So this 4 series Gran Coupe is a sedan based on a coupe that's based on a sedan and is going to be called a coupe. Did I get that right? If not please pardon me as a snort another line of white powdery substance with the rest of the BMW development team.

Wait. So there's a 3 series GT *and* a 4 series GC? This is just insane. Here's an idea: if you really want to give consumers choices, maybe they shouldn't all be the same damn thing.

it still seems strange to separate the 3 series (sedan) and 4 series (coupes) and then to make a 4 series sedan. Maybe it should be called a "3.5"?

Its sad that BMW can afford to bring a million cars to our market but lotus couldnt afford to sell the v6 exige here as road legal since they couldnt afford to certify it :(

3 series, 3 series GT, 4 series = all the same car different roof lines = dilution of BMW brand < the amount they will charge you.......this is bmw's formula for failure It like I am watching BMW turning into old GM and vice versa......and they don't see it !!!
