Mercedes-Benz CLA sales have been booming, with the Stuttgart-based manufacturer moving 2,300 of the sleek four-doors in its first week on sale. That is astonishing. Mercedes moved nearly twice as many CLAs (which start at $29,900) in one week than Jaguar, a brand that is on a very solid roll, sold in all of September. Ignoring the price differences between the Jag line and the CLA, that is still wildly impressive.

Mercedes has been pushing the CLA in television ads, using a shortened version of its Super Bowl spot, which starred William Dafoe, Usher and Kate Upton. "As the bargain entrance into the Mercedes portfolio, we weren't sure how luxury buyers would react," Kelly Blue Book auto analyst Alec Gutierrez told Bloomberg.

The CLA push was just part of MB's 6.7-percent increase in September sales, which were also helped along by a 17-percent jump in E-Class sales. That surge has allowed Mercedes to widen its 2013 sales lead over its rival, BMW, to 2,491 cars, according to Bloomberg. If CLA sales continue at this rate, we can only expect that margin to grow.

What they don't mention here is that the C-Class dropped 18 percent also. Some of those had to be buyers who chose the cheaper CLA over the C-Class. M

Indeed. That will be fixed when the next-gen C-class that arrives next year moves up a half step in pricing, leaving the cheap lease/bargain crew strictly to the CLA. The C-class will likely never sell again at the rates it did earlier this year.

Completely unsurprising. It's stylish. Has the badge. And is cheap. They will fly off the lots.

It's longer than the current C and has a modern interior. No wonder it sells!

Thought CLA was the best looking new car I've seen In quite a few years, regardless of price. Better looking them CLS. Also think the colors of the dash when lit at night looks perfect. The only negative is a prop rod for the hood instead of struts.

If i could afford to trade in my pos scion tc at this moment, i'd be very inclined to buy my first non true manual car ever... it is the only car that at this point i'd consider that doesn't have a clutch pedal.. and that's a huge admission from me

They call it a 4 door coupe. I don't hate the car but the terminology has got to go.

I like the car, yet I'm interested to see how this turns out. A Mercedes for every garage is cool.....until.....they are in every garage. Then they aren't cool anymore...and then the margin goes down the tubes. It could take a generation...but it could happen.

Let's remember that they use MBs, including E-classes and even S-classes, for taxis over in Germany. An MD in "every garage" (or at least "any garage") may not be so far-fetched.

Not sure if MBs are marketed as luxury vehicles as they are in North America - with manuals on some models historically, and some much studier interior materials. I recall hearing through AutoLine AfterHours that the Germans have a huge propensity for their home grown brands...so not sure it it's a direct comparison.

Saw this car in person, I couldn't believe it was a 29k car, I do own some beautiful cars, including the all mighty S-class, this is just a beautiful small car and it feel as luxurious as a CLS, bmw or audi have nothing to compare to this, it is just a real bargain, if I was 17 again I would want this baby under my xmas tree.

I think the looks alone were going to be enough for this to sell quite well but the mileage and interior can seal the deal for a lot of others. I can see what people are talking about when knocking the interior. I happen to like it, especially the way the screen is presented. The grill looks like "a million bucks" as they say which on its own can sell an otherwise only-good car. But this car is very good in so many ways it is bound to be a hit. It really steps it up over the handsome-but-aging Audi line up and the staid/boring BMW line up. The Caddy ATS is a very good car, which I really like too, but somehow the Merc looks like a much more expensive car. If I were in the market for an ICE around $40k this would be the sedan I'd choose.

Man I wish that thing had 3 pedals! Now, before the Automatic-Fanatics jump on me, remember, there are things that we just won't buy a car without, whether it's rational or not. There's a reason we all aren't driving around Yaris hatches every day. Some people won't buy a FWD car and some won't buy a RWD car. I truly enjoy pushing in the 3rd pedal with my left foot and throwing around a shifter a hundred times. I'm also not being unreasonable with that request. The CLA has a 3 pedal version throughout the rest of the world that probably accounts for the majority of its sales. I don't care about the hard 0-60 and 1/4 mile numbers. I know a dual clutch auto will win every time, I just personally enjoy the feeling of the clutch vibrating into my left foot and rowing the shifter into the exact gear I want it, whenever I want.

I bet you enjoy the feeling of the clutch vibrating into your left foot... Haha, in all seriousness, I do agree with you. Manuals just feel better to drive.

I saw one on the road the other day - calling this car ugly would be a kindness.
