The Lexus GS was totally redesigned for the 2013 model year, but Lexus is already tweaking its midsize luxury sedan. While a handful of small changes are being made, the big news for the 2014 model year is that rear-wheel-drive GS350 models will be getting a new eight-speed automatic transmission for improved fuel economy and performance.

Official EPA estimates have yet to be released, but Lexus expects this new transmission to return 19 miles per gallon in the city and 29 mpg on the highway – an improvement of 1 mpg highway. The GS450h still uses a continuously variable transmission, but Lexus says that it has been optimized to mimic the shift points of an eight-speed automatic. The final powertrain change made to the 2014 Lexus GS include tweaks to the GS350's engine intake and exhaust systems, which should help give the sedan a sportier feel.

Inside, Lexus has added Siri Eyes Free inside both the GS350 and GS450h, which allows drivers to use their iPhone's Siri voice assistant simply by pushing a button on the steering wheel. Other changes include a new full-color head-up display, and an available power trunk opener. A new Luxury Package adds LED fog lights, 18-inch "superchrome" wheels on the GS350 and 18-inch graphite-finish wheels on the GS450h. Interesting, the optional Lexus Night View system has been dropped.

Lexus has yet to release pricing or availability for its updated GS lineup, but press releases for the 2014 GS350 and GS450h are posted below.

Lexus GS 350 Delivers Ideal Blend of Luxury, Sport and Alluring Design
-New eight-speed automatic transmission for 2014
-New Siri® Eyes Free mode, with technology from Apple®
-Standard 306-hp 3.5-liter V6; rear wheel drive or all-weather drive
-Available F SPORT Package with Adaptive Variable Suspension

The new-generation Lexus GS 350, introduced for the 2013 model year, delights luxury aesthete and enthusiast driver alike, with engaging performance that never compromises the brand's renowned ride smoothness, and ride comfort that does not take the edge off performance. Leading a long list of enhancements for 2014, a new eight-speed automatic transmission with steering wheel paddle shifters debuts for the rear-wheel drive (RWD) model, heightening performance response and improving fuel efficiency.

Behind its distinctive spindle grille, which creates an unmistakable brand identity, the Lexus GS 350 delivers a powerful yet refined kick from a 306-horsepower 3.5-liter V6. The unique combination of both direct fuel injection and additional port fuel injectors ensures ample power and torque at all engine speeds. The dual exhaust tips emit a muted growl under acceleration, and a hushed tone at cruising speeds. The available F SPORT Package, which can be paired with either the RWD model or with the available all-weather drive (AWD) system, sharpens the handling aptitude and driver engagement without disrupting the renowned Lexus smoothness and refined demeanor.

The Lexus all-weather drive option is an all-season traction and handling enhancer in the GS 350. Using an electronically controlled center differential, the system can vary the front-to-rear torque balance from its default ratio of 30:70 to as much as 50:50, depending on driving conditions. The driver will feel the result in higher traction on slippery roads, but will not feel the system's seamless transitions.

Long a leader in user technology that's easy to use, Lexus has integrated Siri® Eyes Free Mode, with technology licensed from Apple®, in the 2014 GS 350. Compatible with the iPhone® 4S and iPhone 5 models forward, Siri lets you call contacts, select and play music from iTunes®, get turn-by-turn navigation through Siri and Apple maps, and much more. To help you keep eyes on the road and hands on the wheel, Siri can read notifications, read calendar information and allow you to add reminders, calendar appointments and notes.

The Lexus Art of Luxury
Even with its sweeping, coupe-like profile, the Lexus GS 350 provides ample headroom for rear-seat passengers. The new-generation GS offers greater rear headroom, knee room, legroom and foot space than the previous GS, yet in a sleeker package. The trunk, too, grew with the redesign and can easily accommodate four golf bags.

The sumptuously detailed cabin, trimmed in perforated leather and matte dark brown walnut wood, comes with standard 10-way power front seats. Some competitors charge extra for leather, even in this price range. Rear seat passengers are treated no less regally, with deeply scalloped seats providing excellent support and generous legroom for long trips.

Lexus recognizes that temperature is a personal preference, with passengers often having diverse needs. The GS 350 addresses this situation quite effectively. A first-in-class technology, the energy-saving S-Flow automatic climate control system detects if there is a front passenger and directs airflow only to the occupied front seat or seats.

With the optional heated and ventilated front seats, the 2014 GS 350 gains the Climate Concierge feature similar to that in the Lexus LS flagship sedan. In the GS 350, the system automatically monitors the temperature of three separate climate zones and adjusts not only the fans, but also the temperature of the seats and steering wheel individually. Each zone will achieve its pre-set level of comfort as quickly as possible.

Control Via Touch or Voice
The addition of Siri Eyes Free function complements the user technology already in place in the GS 350. The next-generation Remote Touch with one-push confirmation is standard and enables smooth, intuitive control of climate, audio, phone, the optional navigation system and more. A standard rear back-up camera helps adds security and convenience.

Located front and center, and central to that technology, a vibrant high-resolution control display provides easy access to a multitude of vehicle features. Equipping the GS 350 with the optional navigation system adds a stunning 12.3-inch multimedia display with split-screen capability. You can view a large map display on the left side while also monitoring audio, climate or other vehicle information on the right.

Lexus Enform® Helps Keep You Connected
Lexus has expanded connectivity in its vehicles while helping to reduce driver distraction. The foundation of this capability, Lexus Enform, can make a compatible Bluetooth smartphone even smarter. The available Enform service, with Destination Assist, eDestination, and App Suite, comes with the available Navigation System. Lexus Enform provides access to the subscription-free App Suite. Performance
In the new-generation GS 350, Lexus put more control over vehicle performance at the driver's fingertips with the Drive Mode selector. In addition to Normal mode, the system offers ECO mode, which sets throttle mapping, seat heating and climate control systems for optimal fuel economy. When driving in ECO mode, instrument meter lighting changes to blue.

The GS 350 really comes alive in SPORT S mode, with throttle mapping delivering sharper response and transmission shifting priorities altered to hold gears longer under acceleration. Instrument meter lighting changes, appropriately, to red when driving in SPORT S mode.

With the F SPORT and Luxury Packages, the GS 350 gains a fourth driving mode, SPORT S+. The "plus" widens system engagement to also include a sport setting for the Adaptive Variable Suspension, electric power steering system and Vehicle Dynamic Integrated Management (VDIM). The result is the most engaging GS driving experience ever, yet still while maintaining the classic Lexus smoothness and comfort.

F SPORT Package Channels Supercar Spirit
Taking inspiration from the Lexus LFA supercar, which recently completed a 500-unit production run, the F SPORT Package for the GS 350 amps up handling with a comprehensive chassis makeover. The special sport-tuned suspension substitutes firmer springs, larger front brakes with high-friction brake pads, an Adaptive Variable Suspension damping system, thicker stabilizer bars, a variable gear ratio steering system and specially tuned bushings. Not surprisingly, the GS 350 F SPORT maintains outstanding ride composure even with its amplified handling acuity.

On top of F SPORT, the GS 350 can also be equipped with the Lexus Dynamic Handling (LDH) system with Dynamic Rear Steering (DRS). So equipped, the rear-wheel steering can add up to two degrees of input, with the variable gear ratio steering system also adding input at the front wheels for exceptionally controlled cornering performance.

The F SPORT stands apart with exclusive front bumper and rear lower valence styling, a rear lip spoiler and F SPORT mesh grille inserts. The rear bumper integrates a distinctive exhaust diffuser and centered aero fins to help control underbody airflow. Exclusive F SPORT design touches continue in the cabin with smooth, striated aluminum trim, unique perforated leather upholstery and trim, a black headliner, aluminum pedals and a three–spoke F SPORT steering wheel.

The Cabernet Red leather interior available exclusively in conjunction with the F SPORT is not for the shy.

A unique touch in all GS 350 models, and a reflection of Lexus luxury values, the analog clock is carved from a single ingot of aluminum for a smooth consistent appearance and uses LED indicators.

VDIM employs these systems collectively and seamlessly to help make corrections while allowing higher dynamic capability. The system also provides a limited-slip differential effect.

Safety/Security Features
The GS is standard equipped with 10 airbags, including a knee airbag for both driver and front passenger, seat-mounted side airbags for outboard rear seats, and side curtain airbags for all four outboard occupant seating positions.

Whiplash Injury Lessening front seats reduce the space between the occupant's head and headrest to help limit excessive head movement, and help decrease the severity of whiplash-type injuries in certain types of rear end collisions.

Available options to help further enhance occupant safety include a Pre-Collision System (PCS), which uses the Dynamic Radar Cruise Control System to provide early warning of upcoming objects that might result in a collision. The system uses an infrared camera with new scanning technology to monitor the direction the driver's eyes are looking. In the event that the driver does not appear to be looking forward when a collision appears imminent, the system will initiate the warning at an earlier threshold. If the driver still does not respond and make the appropriate maneuver, the system will initiate braking intervention up to 1.2 seconds prior to impact, designed to help lessen the severity of the collision. With available Lexus Dynamic Handling, PCS will help further mitigate the occurrence of a collision.

Lexus GS 450h Moves the Benchmark for Luxury Hybrids
-Zero to 60 in 5.6 seconds; 31 MPG combined fuel economy
-Transmission mimics eight-speed automatic for more engaging performance
-Available Blind Spot Monitor gains Cross Traffic Alert and power folding mirrors
-New Siri® Eyes Free mode, with technology from Apple®

The 2014 Lexus GS 450h presents a striking dichotomy in performance and efficiency. Its Lexus Hybrid Synergy Drive system delivers 338 total system horsepower for dazzling performance, yet this dramatically styled, spacious sedan also delivers EPA fuel economy ratings on par with cars half its power: 29 mpg city, 34 mpg highway and 31 mpg combined.

The fuel economy of the new-generation GS 450h represents an impressive 35 percent improvement over the previous generation GS hybrid model, a testament to the brand's relentless pursuit of luxury hybrid leadership. Lexus was the first luxury brand to introduce a hybrid model nearly 10 years ago and today offers five hybrids, the most of any luxury car brand.

Driving a GS 450h, the driver will be struck by the uncanny smoothness of the powertrain. The Lexus Hybrid Drive system teams the output of an Atkinson cycle 3.5-liter V6 engine with a water-cooled permanent magnet electric motor through a planetary-type continuously variable transmission. Independently or in parallel as needed, the gas engine and electric motor drive the rear wheels. The high performance nickel-metal hydride battery pack uses a stacked design to improve trunk space, which is greater than even the gas-only models of the previous generation GS.

Thanks to high system torque at all speeds, and a zero-to-60 mph acceleration in just 5.6 seconds, the GS 450h will feel more like a V8 to the driver. But it uses fuel like a four-cylinder engine. That's just one element in its performance-oriented persona. Drivers looking for more control and engagement from a hybrid model will find it in the GS 450h, which comes equipped with Lexus Drive Mode selector featuring five modes.

Normal mode offers a balance of efficiency and performance response that's ideal for everyday driving and yields the smoothest driving experience. Two of the modes focus on fuel economy. ECO mode sets throttle mapping, seat heating and climate control systems to prioritize energy conservation. When driving in ECO mode, instrument meter lighting changes to blue. The EV mode allows the vehicle to be driven short distances, under certain circumstances, using only the electric motor.

Driving enthusiasts will welcome the SPORT S and SPORT S+ modes. SPORT mode transforms the car's personality, with sharper throttle response and transmission control that mimics the stepped shifting of an eight-speed automatic transmission (compared to six steps in the 2013 model). Instrument meter lighting changes, appropriately, to red when driving in SPORT S mode.

Selecting SPORT S+ mode also engages a sport setting for the Adaptive Variable Suspension, electric power steering system and Vehicle Dynamic Integrated Management (VDIM). In this mode, the GS 450h drives like no other hybrid sedan, adding a sporting edge to the handling while maintaining the classic Lexus smoothness and comfort.

Long a leader in user technology that's easy to use, Lexus has standard integrated Siri® Eyes Free Mode, with technology licensed from Apple®, in the 2014 GS 450h. Compatible with the iPhone® 4S and iPhone 5 models forward, Siri lets you call contacts, select and play music from iTunes®, get turn-by-turn navigation through Siri and Apple maps, and much more. To help keep eyes on the road and hands on the wheel, Siri can read notifications, read calendar information and allow you to add reminders, calendar appointments and notes.

Subtle but Distinctive Look for Hybrid Model
Sharing the dramatic new design of the GS 350 gas model, the GS 450h conveys its hybrid identity with elegant subtlety. In front, an available three-lamp design combines high and low beam LED lamps and turn signals in a single horizontal row. At the rear, the GS 450h shares the gas model's L-shaped LED tail lamps and stabilizing fins in the bumper's lower section and also conceals the tailpipes. Discrete blue hybrid badging completes this high-tech, high-efficiency model's distinguishing features.

Even with its sweeping, coupe-like profile, the Lexus GS 450h provides ample headroom for rear-seat passengers. The new-generation GS offers greater rear headroom, knee room, legroom and foot space than in the previous GS, yet in a sleeker package.

The Art of Lexus Luxury
The cabin of the Lexus GS 450h is nothing short of sumptuous. The standard 10-way power front seats, and the rear seats, are trimmed in soft perforated leather. The GS 450h features matte bamboo trim and comes with additional standard luxury features over the GS 350, includingheated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, power rear sunshade and a high-intensity interior heater.Rear seat passengers are treated no less regally, with deeply scalloped seats providing excellent support and generous legroom for long trips.

Lexus puts more personal control in climate control with the GS 450h. A first-in-class technology, the energy-saving S-Flow automatic climate control system detects if there is a front passenger and directs airflow only to the occupied front seat or seats.

New for 2014, the Climate Concierge feature, similar to that in the Lexus LS flagship sedan, personalizes climate control for passengers. In the GS 450h, the system automatically monitors the temperature of three separate climate zones and adjusts not only the fans, but also the temperature of the seats and steering wheel according to preset preferences. Each zone will achieve its pre-set level of comfort as quickly as possible.

Advanced Connectivity, Easy Controls Through Touch and Voice
In the Lexus GS 450h, user technology works for the user, not the other way around. The next-generation Remote Touch with one-push confirmation is standard and enables smooth, intuitive control of climate, audio, phone, the optional navigation system and more. A standard rear back-up camera adds security and convenience.

Located front and center, and central to that technology, a vibrant high-resolution control display provides easy access to a multitude of vehicle features. Equipping the GS 450h with the optional navigation system adds a stunning 12.3-inch multimedia display with split-screen capability. The driver and passenger can view a large map display on the left while also monitoring audio, climate or other vehicle information on the right.

Lexus has expanded connectivity in its vehicles while helping to reduce driver distraction. The foundation of this capability, Lexus Enform, can make a compatible Bluetooth smartphone even smarter. The available Enform service, with Destination Assist, eDestination, and App Suite, comes with the Navigation System/Mark Levinson Audio Package. Lexus Enform provides access to the subscription-free App Suite. These voice-enabled apps let you search the Internet through Bing™, make restaurant reservations through OpenTable®, get movie tickets via MovieTickets.com™, listen to Internet radio, including , Pandora®, and iHeartRadio™, search business reviews on Yelp®, and check in on Facebook Places™.

Lexus Enformwith Safety Connect® is available by subscription. Complimentary one-year trial subscriptions are available on all purchases of new Lexus vehicles equipped with these features. Safety Connect is standard on all vehicles while Lexus Enform with Safety Connect is on all vehicles equipped with the optional Navigation system. The Lexus Enform and the Safety Connect response centers operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week-every day of the year.

Lexus Enform vehicles are factory ready for subscriptions to a variety of innovative SiriusXM services including NavTraffic, NavWeather, Sports, Stocks and Fuel Prices. SiriusXM services offer complimentary one-year trial data subscription.

A unique touch in all GS models, and certainly a reflection of Lexus luxury values, the analog clock is

Certified as a Super-Ultra Low Emissions Vehicle (SULEV) which has lower emissions than clean diesels.

The system's regenerative braking operation range has been expanded, contributing to further improvements over the previous generation in fuel efficiency.

Improved fuel consumption over the previous generation is achieved through a high compression ratio of 13:1, a new mid-port intake tumble generator and the adoption of a Lexus D-4S fuel injection technology. With one injector installed in the combustion chamber and a second mounted in the intake port, D-4S combines the strengths of both direct and port injection for maximum efficiency and lowest emissions.

The PCU boosts motor drive voltage to a maximum 650V in Sport mode and limits it to a maximum of 500V in ECO mode under normal driving conditions.

You all need to go drive it before posting all these baseless comments. Look at all the reviews it is trumping over the usual Germans. You people need to remember that OWNING a car is different from just basing it on just the once over reviews as well. Sure that Jag is more interesting somewhat, but am sure you will a great time getting acquainted with the staff at the service dealerships more often than not. I know i sure value reliability and my time more so than going to the damn dealerships to do a warranty claim on something wrong with the car. To those clowns that still think that a Lexus is a over-glorified Toyota, WAKE UP and go read history... It is called platform sharing and being smart with your money from business point of view. Why the hell do people engage Toyota to turn their businesses around with their high level of efficiency and economies of scale? Why don't i hear much slamming of Veedub and Audi for their sharing of platforms and engines? If the engines are a gem and fulfill the daily needs and wants of people, who is to say that the 2GR-FSE is a turd? Go dig deep and see how well developed this V6 engine is. I know i will get slammed now and people think Toyota/Lexus is paying me money to speak up, FYI, i am a SAAB diehard and will drive my SAAB to my grave. I just feel that why be such haters? Give credit to them where credit is due. No car is perfect and maybe this car is just not for you. So quit whining because this Lexus GS is still gonna sell well and just look at the sales records, they are climbing by the months for Lexus and no matter what you say, this spindle grille predator look is winning sales. Numbers don't lie. C'mon, we are all motoring enthusiasts, be glad that Toyota/Lexus is still churning out an interesting RWD V6 with an 8 speed and not just a grocery getter like a Corolla. At least we have a choice. I'd be damned the day that Toyota/Lexus drops all these RWD off their lineup. Let's pray that does not occur... Peace Out

I tested all the Germans, Jaguar, Infiniti, and Cadillac before I purchased my GS. The GS is the best car in its class, no doubt. It is also good to know that it will not fall apart when the warranty ends. To buy anything else makes no sense.

It's about time, again Lexus is about 5 years behind the Germans and playing copycat. They need to be more innovative, at least they are less bland now, wouldn't call it good styling, but at least they are styling them one way or the other!

Yep, the LS certainly introduced the 8-speed to market in September 2006. "DaimlerChrysler" actually announced the 7-speed in 2003. Goldie, the Toyota idea would probably date back 2003, since engineers at Aisin would've gotten that taken care of prior to 2005 for prototyping. It would've been fitted following the '07 LS460 XF40's post-design stage development in 2004. ZF did introduce the 5-speed (December 1990/early 1991) and 6-speed (November 2001) automatic transmissions on BMWs(1991 E36 and 2002 E65). At JLR, some of what's in development isn't due until 2016.

I am really loving my GS350 F-Sport. After 1 year ad 8 months with almost 20k miles, I really made the best decision. its a great looking sedan and people comment on how sharp it looks. I do wish I had the 8 speed but still the 6speed has less gear hunting then my 2011 BMW 5 with the 8 speed. The GS outhandles my BMW 535i and rides better with good body control compared to the later generation 5 series. IT really does put the heavy porky 5 to shame. BMW has to really watch out for Lexus.

If it were slower, not as good a handler, and had a sorrier interior, it could definitely step down to play with those lesser models..... BD

I hate to agree and will get downvotes for this, but hear my logic. For 99% of all drivers that purchase this class of vehicle I'd imagine the GS "out performs" them as far as comfort, reliability, price of ownership, amenities, etc etc. NOW if the owners wanted to take their cars to a track on the weekend then perhaps the Germans would win in the upper limit handling areas, but lets not kid ourselves, no one is buying this class of vehicle to street race or take to the track on the weekends. Each manufacturer already fills that void with other vehicles. So for what they will all be used for, I'd imagine the ES holds the trump card. That being said I'd still prefer a 5 series, but I can't afford any of them.

Don't worry the GS-F has already been spied, not to mention the GS Fsport reviewed very well against those competitors.

That's my qualm with this car. The ES looks better from the back than the GS. The IS doesn't have enough room for a carseat in the back.

I cannot understand the allure of modern Lexus cars. Acura and Lexus are some of the most boring crowd blending luxury cars on the market.

Oh it's getting an 8 speed. That's cool. Not like even HYUNDAI STARTED USING THEM LAST YEAR!

Lexus was the first car company to use an 8 speed back in 2007 for the LS.

Actually, it was even 2006. The LS460 debuted almost 8 years ago, when in-house Hyundai development started having a renaissance for today's models.
