Volkswagen halted production of the Routan minivan in late 2012 due to low sales volume, but there were reports swirling around that it would live on and continue production alongside the closely related Chrysler Town & Country and Dodge Grand Caravan. But now VW says that it will indeed stop Routan production for good, The Detroit Bureau reports.

As of our report in March, VW hadn't built a single Routan in 2013, and we can't imagine things have gotten much better for the minivan since then. The Detroit Bureau reports that VW produced some 2014 Routans, but they aren't for sale to the public – they are fleet-only affairs.

VW originally intended to sell between 45,000 and 50,000 Routans per year, but since it was introduced for the 2009 model year, annual sales of the minivan have averaged only 11,500 units. VW has sold 57,683 Routans total.

2013 marks the last year of production of another VW people mover, the Microbus, which had a much longer production run of 63 years. Known as the Kombi in Brazil, where it is still produced, a special-edition model, the Kombi Last Edition, marks the end of that iconic van's production.

      By the way, the Kombi Last Edition, with a project from the fifties, a 80hp engine, no air condinioned, no power windows, locks or mirrors, no ABS and no airbags, retails for a whopping FORTY THOUSAND AMERICAN DOLLARS. That is twice the sticker price for the now departed regular version, which is basically the same as the the special edition aside from a two-tone paint scheme and different upholstery. Sounds absurd, but still VW had to double the initial offering of the Last Edition to keep up with high demand.

      I like my VW's - I never take them to a dealer for any work - and I have had no gremlins or anything that would keep me from buying another. EXCEPT - VW's grand ideas over the last fifteen years or so on what we Americans want. They haven't a clue - not even close. When they came out with the Routan idea - VW was asked what engines would be offered, the response from VW was, "Americans don't care about engine choices." Never mind the whole Routan idea was ill-conceived - the VW brass still hasn't a clue. For years, VW owners have BEEN ASKING FOR THE EUROPEAN MODELS TO BE SOLD HERE, STATE-SIDE. Yet still, they can't find their way out of a paper-bag. So, it's VW's attitude of idiocy that will have me seriously looking else where after driving and owning them since the mid 1970's. Even house-wives in a survey of mini-van choices, knew that the Routan was just an over-spec'd, over-priced Chrysler product. HEY,,, you stupid, dumb, out of touch German uber managers,,,,,, wake up and smell anything that will have you actually LISTENING TO WHAT WE WANT - AND DELIVERING IT TO US.         I disagree. VW's recent cheapened models are selling pretty well (or they did until recently). I think most Americans really don't care about things like solid rear axles (what is that technical mumbo-jumbo?), mushy softened seats, and numb steering with minimal road feel. I think VW executives gauged the mass market pretty well.

      The Chrylser/Dodge vans have seen significant updates over the years and the Routan was left untouched, save for upgrades that it get by default such as the new engine. Only a brand snob would pay more for the VW with less options (and no opportunity for stow n go)

      How about your journo's doing a little investigative reporting? Find out the the VW execs that green lighted this abomination and make it public. These individuals ought to be treated much the same as sex offenders. Once they offend their whereabouts should be on a web site. If we good people stand aside and do nothing these monsters will find work elsewhere and they will strike again. When somebody is responsible for great automotive design their name is splashed around like they were rockstars and I have no problem with that. How we treat the converse actions must be dealt with also and firmly. If these automotive execs knew there was repercussion for their actions maybe they wouldn't do it. I think every new car designed should be entered into some permanent online registry with the designers and the product mangers who approved the design. You know the Pontiac Aztek involved many design and marketing types to get it built. Today I bet the NSA couldn't find a soul that had anything to do with it. They all have scurried away and are infecting other projects as you are reading this.
