Mercedes-Benz is already hard at work on development of the S-Class Coupe, the car that will replace the CL-Class and that was previewed as a concept at the Frankfurt Motor Show. And the car in this latest set of spy shots – which our spy photographer claims is an AMG variant based on its aggressive front fascia, quad exhausts and huge brakes – looks rather far along in the development process.

According to our German informants, this particular prototype has the singing voice of an AMG, and is described as sounding "great." Making that noise should be AMG's 5.5-liter, twin-turbo V8, despite claims of it being near death. While it produces 577 horsepower in the S63 AMG, our spies seem to think it'll get a small bump to 585 horsepower, which contradicts previous reports. Performance should be AMG-worthy, with an expected sprint to 62 miles per hour taking around four seconds.

Take a look up top for the full batch of spy photos.

Making a coupe out of a barge like large sedan is just as stupid as making a convertible out of an SUV. It has less space, costs more and doesn't even look good.

It's camo. They use it to keep the prototype's design safe from spy photographers before it's ready to be released.

Thought it was an Audi TT at first glance.

Congratulations to the C217 development team, as it must be rewarding working on such a highly esteemed model and equally frustrating keeping it under wraps for so long. Observing the concept last weekend in Frankfurt, it has a striking presence and obviously was crafted after the 95% similar production S Coupe design was frozen in 2010. The shark nose may not be as prominent in the production version, but then again that's based on spy shots, since the IAA MB personnel wouldn't tell me anything about the actual S Coupe and said to wait until December.
