DETROIT (AP) - Toyota is recalling 880,584 RAV4 SUVs and Lexus HS 250h sedans in the U.S. and Canada because a repair announced last year may not have solved a safety problem.

RAV4s from the 2006 through 2011 model years and the Lexus HS250h from the 2010 model year are involved in the recall.

Toyota says if rear suspension nuts aren't tightened properly after a wheel alignment, the rear lower suspension arm can rust and separate from the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

At least nine crashes and three injuries related to the problem have been reported, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. At least 131 owners have complained about the issue to NHTSA and Toyota.

Toyota recalled the vehicles last August for the same issue, but spokeswoman Cindy Knight said the repair procedure in the previous recall was incorrect. Knight didn't know if Toyota sent out the wrong instructions or if technicians at its dealerships didn't follow the correct procedures. She said technicians are receiving additional training.

Toyota is recalling 780,584 vehicles in the U.S. and 100,000 in Canada. Owners will be notified over a six-month period starting this month.

Toyota technicians will inspect the vehicles and replace suspension arms which are loose or rusted for free.

Nothing is perfect, but I'm driving a rusty old 1991 Toyota Previa Van with 420,000 miles on it. The original engine and drive train are fine. It gets brakes every 4 or 5 years and the exhaust system, shocks, and struts have been replaced along with some light bulbs. It is a remarkable bullet-proof old van and a great hauler. It will rust in half before it stops running. The whole family drives Toyotas and none of us has had a problem with any Camry, Corolla, Prius, Previa, or Sienna. So, I like being referred to as a moron by another poster for buying Toyota crap. My experience has been very positive with the Toyota line. They are boring but durable.

I work on cars for a living. Toyota has made its image of a well made car thru advertising. They are no better than American made cars that are now on the market. Drive a 2013 American made car if you haven't and I guarantee you will be impressed. Ford has not accepted any money from the government and makes some of the best cars on the market.

Fords are pieces of junk. Never owned a Ford that wasn't. GM products are just as bad as Ford. Every GM product I owned had so many problems I swore them off years ago. Don't tell me to buy a new Ford or GM car because I am done with their junk.

Nah I drove 9 of them Domestic Clunkers, there is a world of difference between a Toyota and a Domestic Clunker. The Difference is Toyota's don't break down like all 9 of mine did, and break down is putting it lightly they nickel and dimed me to death. You've been watching way too many Mike Rowe advertisements. Mike Rose is a compulsive liar. MY Former Ford Dealership had 25 mechanic bays, and were always full. My Toyota dealer has 9 in the same city, and is barely ever occupied. THe same is true with Chevy, GMC, and especially Chrysler dealers, same as the Ford dealership that is. Toyota, Honda and Nissan are the only quality on the road. I have also never seen on Toyota, Honda or Nissan dead on the side of the road, yet alone a near new one. I routinely see Ford, Chevys, GMCs, Cgryslers all dead on the side of the road, and these are all within the last 4 years. Domestic = JUNK!!!!!!

The older Toyotas were good but the recent ones are junk, they have more recalls than GM and Ford combined in recent years. GM has the best quality now.

Yes, I used to be a BIG Toyota fan, but no more. I have a 2005 garage kept, 58,000 miles on it, no chemicals used on interior, non smoker, don't eat or drink in car, one owner - one driver..the dash has cracked in two spots, one down low out of the way of the sun. The response I got .. we will open a file but we have to have lots of complaints before we look into it or consider it a problem. Well the problem you have now is you have one less Toyota buyer who will be sure to tell her friends and coworkers Wouldn't it be easier just to replace my dash.

That would never happen to a Chevy or Ford. Because other problems would plague them first. LOL!

Somebody can't give correct instuctions on how to tighten a nut? Or worse, dealer mechanics can't figure out that the instuction that they DID receive were wrong? Go ahead and tell me again about that superior Japanese quality. I once had a Honda that I bought new. It was the biggest piece of crap I've ever owned. Three alternators, four water pumps, and two complete transmission rebuilds in 106,000 miles. And don't get me started on the brakes. I haven't had to have any major work done on the five GM vehicles my wife and I have owned in the last ten years.

Hmm, well maybe if Toyota used some better grade of galvanized steel, this would not happen. As it is, they build 3rd rate cars that idiots drive. I am amazed that a 1995 Jeep Wrangler that has been to the beach, climbed mountains, been in some torrid conditions can be in better condition than a 4 year old Toy ota rust bucket....
Rust seems to be a recurring Toyota issue...last recall on my Tacoma was for frame rusting out...they spray coated it as a fix...now entire frame is rusted out and they won't do anything about it...this time the "suspension arm can rust".. if the "nut isn't tightened"....really...tighetning a nut stops rust???

At least they get better gas mileage and run longer than any of the Big 3, or is that 1 1/2 now beings Chrysler is foreign owned and GM is still 50% Government owned. I've had my fill of sorry engineering like FMC has and promised them I'd never buy another. The accelerator problem that Toyota experienced was caused by American made parts and I'll bet you this problem is too.

Kulpw please know this......you know nothing ! Have you ever driven a domestic lately ? Drive a Chevy Sonic or Cruze and tell me they don't get BETTER mileage than the rice burners...........the GM 3800 V-6 will out perform, outrun and outlive anything on the planet of like size. Ford F-150 is the best selling truck for DECADES, why ? That's right, know nothing, because they work and Last the best. Get in the real world before you post your biased opinions again.

The accelerator problem was caused by a badly Japanese engineered part. It wasn't the fault of the American workers.

No they dont get better gas mileage than ford or gm you need to wake up and look at mpg numbers. Junkota is number1 with recalls for 2013 junkonda number 2 for 3 years in a row now junkota and junkonda has the most recalled cars around. If you think china or jap parts are better than american made parts you are living in lalala land you must not buy many car parts. JUNKOTA lets go places, like the dealership for our recalls and a recall over a recall.
