"Pics or it didn't happen!" You could almost hear the Internet shouting this when news started to trickle in about a sub-seven-minute Nürburgring lap by the new Porsche 918 Spyder. Well, after an official press release, which we ran earlier today, we have your "pics." Moving pics, to be more exact. Porsche has released on-board footage of the 6:57 lap.

The video, which runs about eight-and-a-half minutes, and shows the 918 from inside the car on a flying lap of the German track. Perhaps what's remarkable is just how undramatic it all looks. Sure, there's some sawing at the wheel from test driver Marc Lieb (one of three testers, including legendary rally king Walter Röhrl), but he makes wrangling the Martini-liveried 918 look kind of easy.

        He could be switching into Race Hybrid coming from "Hotlap" mode. Or, he could be switching from "Race Hybrid" to "Hotlap mode". But considering, some say he was going slightly slower in the last straight (280-290 kmph vs 300+)compared to earlier, he probably switched to "Race Hybrid" which actively charges the electric batteries, while keeping near maximum speed.

        He hit the hot lap button in the middle which gives you all the electric power available with no regeneration.

      I dunno man, seems almost too easy. No clutching or shifting - places where humans can mess up as we do. Saw the Chris Harris video where he drove the F40 and crowned it the best car ever made - with a manual and abs and all that other stuff. I'm going back to my rocking chair I guess.

        @Andy Drake Yes they can. They had other tires that chopped off 9 secs already. This car didn't use active aero. Rohrl asked the drivers not to push it too hard. It was their first attempt. Yes, a lot of reasons. And you noticed the driver slowed down at the very end and coasted to the finish line?

      So I'm dying to know what the other keys jangling on the key ring are. Marc's hotel keys? Just interesting. That car either has a ton of steering kick-back or this thing really likes to be manhandled in the corners. A TON of steering input (and angle at times, understeer or pulling the front around with the AWD?). Tough on tires. Good job, fellas. Good job Marc.

      Kudo to the pilot, but consider that an Aussie V8 Supercar could better that time easily at a cost of about $350-400,000. Just sayin.

      Man seems like this car alot more potential. I feel like they didn't go all out on the track. I strongly believe going atleast 90% can shave off few more seconds no doubt. But man what a machine

      Is it just me or does it seem like this thing understeers. It just looks like he's plowing through some of the longer slow speed corners.

        It is a road-car... they probably couldn't get enough negative camber into the front end to make it stick.

        The 918 is very Neutral. As a matter of fact it may have a slight tendacy to oversteer. What you're seeing; are the bumpy track, the fast speeds, and the 918's ability to trail brake , then peel out of a turn (why it looks like understeer. And/or it's ability to turn in with speed, then Peel out with speed. This is never really been seen before with a production vehicle. It means the driver doesn't slow down, so has to make slight corrections with the wheel. And since the chassis is correctable, he can do this with out braking, thus pushes the throttle and corrects with the wheel. That's what you're seeing.

          Lieb keeps serious steering angle way past where you expect him to start to unwind as he feeds in power, particularly in the slow stuff. The first couple times I thought "ooops", but it's obviously the fast way to drive the car because he does it consistently. The 918 has some rear wheel steer capability. Up to 3 degrees. Maybe that's providing the "unwinding" we expect to see as Lieb accelerates? Otherwise, holding the steering angle that long == understeer.

        I noticed the same thing. It doesn't appear to handle like I thought it would. I was thinking more along the lines of how the GT3 handles.
