It's been known by many names: the Chrysler Town & Country, Dodge Caravan, Plymouth Voyager, Chrysler Voyager, Lancia Voyager, Volkswagen Routan, Ram Cargo Van... but the bottom line is that Chrysler's minivans have defined the segment for 30 years now. In fact, Chrysler says it has sold 13 million of them since 1983, helped along by the Chrysler Town & Country and Dodge Grand Caravan that accounted for nearly half of all minivans sold in the United States just last year. So to celebrate this three-decade milestone, the Auburn Hills auto has announced a pair of new special editions.

2014 Chrysler Town & Country 30th Anniversary EditionThe 2014 Chrysler Town & Country 30th Anniversary Edition starts the Touring-L trim and includes such special touches as 17-inch wheels, unique badging, available Granite Crystal Pearl paint and an interior decked out in black Alcantara and Nappa leather, piano black trim and all the optional bells and whistles bundled in.

The 2014 Dodge Grand Caravan 30th Anniversary Edition, meanwhile, starts off with either the SE or SXT trims and also upgrades with 17-inch alloys as well as color-keyed mirrors and an interior with silver stitching, piano black trim, power everything, and of course, those special badges.

Having sold more than 13 million minivans since first introducing the segment in 1983, and creating 78 minivan segment firsts, such as class-exclusive Stow 'n Go seating and a segment-first Blu-ray rear-seat entertainment system, the Chrysler Town & Country and Dodge Grand Caravan are celebrating their heritage with 30th Anniversary Editions available this fall.

The first Chrysler Group minivan rolled off the Windsor Assembly line on November 2, 1983, sparking a new segment of people movers that rose in popularity very quickly, transporting millions of moms, dads and kids, and becoming part of their families. Even after 30 years, the Chrysler Group continues to lead the segment. The Dodge Grand Caravan was the top selling minivan in the world last year and combined with the Chrysler Town & Country, accounted for nearly half of all minivan sales in the United States in 2012.

Chrysler Town & Country 30th Anniversary Edition
The 2014 Town & Country 30th Anniversary Edition is based on the Touring-L model and features unique exterior and interior content. All Town & Country models come equipped with the award-winning Pentastar 3.6-liter V-6 engine with a class-leading 283 horsepower and a refined six-speed automatic transmission. Exterior features on the 30th Anniversary Edition include 17-inch aluminum wheels with polished faces and painted Satin Carbon pockets, "30th Anniversary" badging and the availability of Granite Crystal Pearl Coat paint.

Equipped with the 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 with class-leading 283 horsepower and a six-speed automatic transmission, the exterior of the Dodge Grand Caravan SE 30th Anniversary Edition features unique 17-inch polished satin carbon aluminum wheels, body-color heated exterior mirrors and 30th Anniversary badging on the front fenders.       When I think minivan, I think Dodge Caravan. That is the reason I maintain that the only minivan for the Chrysler group will be the Dodge Caravan and the Chrysler Town and Country will become a crossover based off this shared platform. Why another crossover when Dodge already has the Journey and Chrysler needs a crossover desperately in it's lineup. The Caravan has had a few quality hick ups over its 30 years, but the new vans are arguably best in class again. Although the competition from Japan has been tough, the Caravan should be at or near the top of every minivan shoppers list. The next generation should firmly place Dodge Caravan comfortably at the head of the class again. After all, when people think minivan, it just has to be Dodge Caravan. Anything less is unacceptable for the new Chrysler Group and that 30 year reputation carries so much credibility and history. Congratulations to the minivan by "the minivan creator".

      I currently own a 1991 Plymouth Voyager. The new minivans really have strayed from their roots. The Chevrolet Venture(owned one a few years ago) and the Ford Freestar were the last good minivans;everything since then has been overdone and uncomfortable. First of all, minivans should only have one sliding door. The second sliding door is utterly pointless. Second of all, they need to take out the Stow N Go, Swivel N go, and all that crap. Hell, they need to discontinue the captain's chairs-they are really cramped and make access to the third row really uncomfortable. What they need to bring back is the "short bench seat" in the 2nd row, which my van has. 1 person can sit very comfortably in it, and it allows for much easier access to the third row. Thirdly, they need to reduce the seating capacity of the third row to 2. There is NO WAY that 3 people could feel comfortable in the third row. Instead of a third row bench, they should put a pair of "jumbo captain's chairs" in the third row; somewhat like the 2nd row captains chairs they currently have, but much more spacious and comfortable. Also Chrysler and other minivan makers need to stop flaunting their seating capacity. NO ONE, and I repeat NO ONE, buys a minivan to carry 6 or 7 people; for that you need a fullsized SUV. Minivans should carry no more than 4 or 5 people at a time. Two chairs in the front, a one-seater "short bench seat" in the middle, and two "jumbo captain's chairs" in the back are more than enough. That makes for a vehicle which can carry 5 people in comfort. I think Chrysler should try experimenting with a truck-based minivan, something like an Astro(loved those), for its next generation Town and Country(discontinue the Caravan and consolidate the minivans under one brand).. Use the Dakota's platform. Use the seating arrangements I described earlier. Engine choices can be a detuned Pentastar 3.6 with 260 hp, a 4.7 PowerTech V8 with 320 hp, and a 5.7 Hemi with 360 hp. Give it a rental-spec trim which starts at $22 k. Fully optioned, it should scrape $40 k.

        I'm not trying to be mean here... but your "ideal minivan" sounds like the most convoluted, least practical vehicle ever. A single middle seat and two captains chairs in the way-back?? No second sliding door option? It even contradicts itself... first you say that second-row captains chairs make it too hard to get to the third row, but then you say large families should get SUVs (which offer even-more-difficult access to the third row). Then there's this laughable gem: "NO ONE, buys a minivan to carry 6 or 7 people; for that you need a fullsized SUV." What?? even the largest fullsize SUV, the Chevrolet Suburban, is worse at loading/hauling 7 people than a Minivan. This is what minivans do well. Want easier access to the back? Buy a van with stow and go middle seats, and stow one of them away.

        Sounds like you need to stick to your second gen minivan with what you\'re saying. And I happen to drive a 1995 Town & Country (Last year for the original platform). I sought it out last year and had to hunt around to find a clean low mileage one at that. I really like it and it fits my current needs. All those things you don\'t like about the new ones I\'m looking forward to when I buy one in a few years. I\'m hoping they put the 8 or 9 speed trans in the current one before they replace it and then that will be my future car when they\'re a few years old. You should probably have brushed up on your knowledge of what Chrysler is doing before making your other statements. You will probably be able to buy a truck based passenger van when they\'re selling all the Fiat versions.

      Chrysler and Dodge are holdovers -like Chevy, Buick, and Cadillac, and Ford and Lincoln-of the days when American car companies tried to create a "move up" scenario toward "luxury". There's not a whole lot of difference in the offerings. Hopefully Fiat will bring some better definition to both brands IF they choose to keep both. I still think eventually the company will be Fiat USA and most vehicles except the SRTs, RAM, and maybe Jeep will be Fiat based.

      Back in the day, town and country and the caravan dominated the market, it was THE minivan... These days I rarely see any of them from Chrysler and Dodge. My neighbor bought a Routan and within a month changed it to Kia sedona, which doesn't say much....

        me too. My dad had a wood on brown '84 and my mom had a wood on blue '85. They had less than 90hp each and this is what i learned to drive on.
